Raphael (April 6 or March 28, 1483 April 6, 1520) was an Italian painter and architect of the High
Renaissance. Raphael was enormously productive, running an unusually large workshop. Most of
his work remains especially in the Vatican.
He received his first training from his father, Giovanni Santi, who was a poet and a painter. After
that he became a student and assistant of the painter Perugino. Raphael imitated his master closely
and sometimes it is difficult to distinguish which works are painted by Raphael. His work at that
period is Marriage of the Virgin (1.) Mary receives a ring from Joseph. In contrast to the calm
figures of the main group, there are one man, who is shown in motion (liikuvuses). He is breaking a
dead stick over his knee, because he fail to win Mary's heart. Joseph's stick, on the other hand, has
blossomed.
