British Literature: John Tolkien
other — Welsh, Norse, Finnish, Gothic.
He early showed up linguistic talent, after studying the
Welsh and Finnish languages, he began designing
"Elvish" languages.
Biography. Youth
In 1911, Tolkien went on a summer holiday in
Switzerland, a trip that he recollects vividly in a
1968 letter, noting that Bilbo's journey across
the Misty Mountains is directly based on his
adventures as their party of hiked
from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen and on to
camp in the moraines beyond Mürren.
Design languages
Even in childhood, John with his friends come up
with multiple languages to communicate with
each other. This passion to the study of existing
and construction of new languages remained with
him all his life. He is the creator of several
artificial languages Quenya, or language of the
High Elves; Sindarin is the language of the Grey
Elves. New languages were largely guided by the
beauty of the sound.
