mother-in-law jokes to mothers-in-law. Is is true? Did Australians laugh about you? They are very easy-going by nature. They put a high value on their leisure time. I hope that when I go to Australia, I will see kangaroos and koalas. I have seen they only in Zoo, not in nature. Did you see any animals in nature? Do you know that the cutest animal spends 80% of its time asleep in eucalyptus tree? I didn't know it before. Australian most famous landmarks are an ancient rock in the desert, a modern opera house in Sydney harbour and a huge coral reef off the north-east coast. I remember when you talked about your dream you wanted to visit Sydney opera house. Did you made your dream true? I hope you did it! I hope, that you answer me soon. With best wishes, xxx

London - the capital of Great Britain

The central part of London is the City. There are many famous historical buildings in the City. The Houses of Parliament are one of them. It was constructed from 1840 until 1888. From 1875 the parliament meetings take place there. There are 1100 rooms, and 3.2 km of corridors. The Houses of Parliament consists of two parts the house of the lords and the house of the commons. The clock tower Big Ben is a part of the houses of parliament. Big Ben is one of London's best-known landmarks, and looks most spectacular at night when the clock faces are illuminated. You even know when parliament is in session, because a light shines above the clock face. The name Big Ben actually refers not to the clock-tower itself, but to the thirteen ton bell in it. The four dials of the clock are 23 feet square, the minute hand is 14 feet long and the figures are 2 feet high. During the business hours the streets of the City are full of people. Everybody seems to be in a hurry

The parks are marketed to young families, and although they have a number of roller coasters, they are not as numerous or as extreme as those in other parks, and there is a greater emphasis on rides suitable for young children. The parks are split into various areas, which are common between the parks, for example all the parks include a Lego miniland, a model village which includes models of landmarks and scenes from around the world made from millions of genuine Lego bricks. Other common features include a Lego Mindstorms centre (fun-based learning), Duplo Gardens (for smaller children), Driving area (including attractions such as Driving school, Boating school, Ballooning school and Fire Academy), My Town, Wild Woods and Knight's Kingdom. The parks' rides are all Lego themed; many are made to appear as if they are built out of Lego bricks.

Tartu nähtavad linnastruktuurid. Kevin Lynch`i teooria rakendus

Summary The visual city structures of Tartu. Based on the theory of Kevin Lynch The main aim of this thesis was the visual observation of Tartu and applying the theories of Kevin Lynch into practise. The visual structures of Tartu and their importance to the image of the city were clarified. During field work Tartu was viewed from several observation posts. In doing this it become clear that all five elements of the city, reported by Lynch were present in Tartu. The most numerous were landmarks, there were almost 20 of those in the area under observation. Most of them in the town centre area, where they formed sort of a cluster. Majority of landmarks are built in the last decade, indicating that newly built structures are important to the image of city. Two most important landmarks in Tartu are Emajõe Ärikeskus (Emajõe Business centre) and Tigutorn (Snail Tower). These are most easily spotted in the city and these are also the buildings that most characterize Tartu.

occurring after eating a lot of yew foliage. Traditional uses In recent years it has been found that taxol, a chemical found in the bark of the yew, inhibits cell growth and cell division, and may have some promise in the fight against cancer. It was also one of the most important trees in the history of European warfare, as its wood was used exclusively for the making of the longbows, spears and dagger handles. In the past they were used as landmarks, because of their size and longevity, and their dark branches would make them stand out in the landscape. It is excellent for furniture making, interior, fences, gates, chairs, doors, tables, and rustic furniture. Where the Yew Grows It is also possible to find small trees growing near bigger trees, which transplant well. They prefer a moist, fertile, sandy loam soil, but will grow well in most soils except water-logged ground or sticky wet clay

Houses of parliament

HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT Houses of Parliament also known as the Palace of Westminster is one of the most attractive buildings in London. It stands on the site where Edward the Confessor had the original palace built in the first half of the eleventh century . In 1547 the royal residence was moved to Whitehall Palace, but the Lords continued to meet at Westminster, while the commons met in St. Stephen's Chapel. Ever since these early times, the Palace of Westminster has been home to the English Parliament. In 1834 there was a huge fire that destroyed much of the old palace. All that remained was the chapel crypt, The Jewel Tower and Westminster Hall. It was Lord Melbourne, the Prime Minister, who saved the great hall by arranging for the fire engines to be brought right into the hall and personally supervising the fire fighting operation. meaningfulness and richness of the world. Legibility This book will consider the visual quality of the American city by studying the mental image of that city which is held by its citizens. It will concentrate especially on one particular visual quality: the apparent clarity or "legibility" of the cityscape. By this we mean the ease with which its parts can be recognized and can be organized into a coherent pattern. a legible city would be one whose districts or landmarks or pathways are easily identifiable and are easily grouped into an over-all pattern. This book will assert that legibility is crucial in the city setting, Although clarity or legibility is by no means the only important property of a beautiful city, it is of special importance when considering environments at the urban scale of size, time, and complexity. To understand this, we must consider not just the city as a thing in itself, but the city being perceived by its inhabitants. Structuring

London - sillad, tornid, ajalugu

THE CITY OF LONDON History The City of London occupies one square mile in the middle of the capital. It once made up entire town of London, surrounded by the wall first built by Romans. The Romans also built a bridge over the Thames and there has been one in the same area ever since. The Roman Londinium grew up on the northern side of the bridge. In AD 61 the native Celtic tribe, led by Queen Boudicca, rose up against the Romans. They burnt down Londinium to the ground and killed most of its inhabitants. Roman armies eventually defeated Boudicca and Londinium was rebuilt. At the end of the fourth century AD the Roman Empire began to crumble and the Roman armies were recalled from Britain to defend Rome itself. Once they had left, tribes such as Angles, Saxons and Jutes invaded and settled in from Holland, Germany and Denmark. Together they are known as Anglo-Saxons. They were farming people who pr...

boundaries, but the name "London" has long applied more to the whole metropolis that has grown up around it. London has been an important settlement for over two millenniums. It is also one of the world's leading business, financial and cultural centres and its influence in politics, education, entertainment and even fashion contribute to its status as a major global city. London is a major tourist attraction with four world heritage sites, several royal parks and numerous iconic landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament, Towe Bridge, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and the London Eye. 2. History Although there is some evidence of a permanent settlement before the Romans came in 43 A.D., it is more accepted by historians that the Romans were the first. The settlement was called Londinium. The first London lasted for just seventeen years, for around AD 61, a tribe of Celts led by Queen Boudica stormed London, burning it to the ground. The next heavily-planned London

The castle’s area is approximately 484,000 square feet (44, 955 square metres). The castle has been garrison fortress, home, official palace and sometimes prison for most of the Kings and Queens of England/Great Britain. During the war, the castle has been heavily fortified but when country has been in peace, it has been expanded with large and grand apartments and this pattern has continued nowadays. The White Cliffs of Dover is one of England’s most famous natural landmarks. The cliffs were formed over 80 million years ago. They are a part of British coastline facing France and the Strait of Dover. The cliffs owe its impressive façade to its composition of chalk accentuated by streaks of black flint and they spread east and west from the town of Dover in the county of Kent. There are miles of hidden tunnels behind the cliff face which were created during the Middle Ages and had an important role in the defence of Britain during the Napoleonic wars.

The City on London

By the end of the 18th century it was clear that this old bridge was too narrow and old. So once again a new London Bridge was built. It opened in 1831 and was used until 1924. Then it was replaced by a modern one. The old Bridge was sold to America for 400,000 dollars. The Current London Bridge was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on the 7 th of March, 1973. Tower Bridge The Tower Bridge, named after its two impressive towers, is one of London's best known landmarks. This Victorian Bridge is now more than 100 years old. Designed by Wolfe Barry and Horace Jones, and completed in 1894, the middle of the bridge can be raised to permit large vessels to pass the Tower Bridge. It used to be raised about 50 times a day, but nowadays it is only raised 4 to 5 times a week. It is famous for its high-level walkways, which were closed in 1910 due to the lack of use. In 1982 the walkways were glazed and opened as a permanent exhibition.

CLOSING KALARAND FOR PUBLIC

Pro Kapital bought property next to the Kalarand seaside in 2001 and announced that they will make Kalarand into a residential and business district. From thereon there has been a heated debate between the locals and Pro Kapital over the developing plans. The detailed plan of Kalaranna neighbourhood expands on more than 7 hectares and it has been processed for over a decade. Pro Kapital believes that the area of Kalaranna should be one of Tallinn’s gateways and landmarks. Currently Pro Kapital sees it as an epoch of desolate wasteland which is located in the heart of Tallinn. Pro Kapital believes that the future of Kalaranna should be as a promenade open to the sea, a harmonious whole of the greenery and buildings shaping the urban space. People of Kalamaja overall agree with the views of Pro Kapital but they are not fond of the idea of losing natural sandy coastal line, which by the detailed plan will be replaced by a promenade.

place where the bishops and the nobility resided. Here the landed gentry built their beautiful town houses. Most of the remaining buildings were erected after the big fire on Toompea in 1684. Historically, the fortress on Toompea consisted of two parts : the small fortress (today's Toompea Castle) and the big fortress (The rest of Toompea). Pikk Hermann is the best-known corner tower among the three surviving ones of Toompea Castle. It is 46 metres high and serves as one of Estonia's landmarks. Tall Hermann was a traditional name given to the main towers of German castles. After the 50-year long Soviet occupation, the Estonian blue-black-white tricolour was once again hoisted on Pikk Hermann on 24 February 1989. The Cathedral of St. Mary the Virgin (Toomkirik or the Dome Church) was consecrated as a single- nave church with a rectangular chancel in 1240, and rebuilt into a Gothic basilica thereafter. The church suffered in the fire of 1684 and was largely reconstructed

London History The Romans AD 43- AD 410 The Romans finally invaded Britain in AD 43 from Kent. The Romans lead by Julius Caesar attempted to invade Britain twice before that in 55 and 54 BC but the invasions were unsuccessful. They made their way to the river Thames and sailed up it. The Romans knew it was important to control a crossing point at the river Thames, so they decided to build a settlement on the north bank. Although small settlements had been built on the banks of the Thames, the Romans were the ones who built the first city. They called their city Londinium. The Roman engineers noticed that the point where the swampy river narrowed would make an ideal crossing point, they built London Bridge. Less than 20 years later the native Iceni tribe, led by Queen Boudicca, rose up against the Romans in revenge for mistreatment and burnt Londinium to the ground. The well disciplined Roman army defeated her forces and Londinium was r...
