And black communities carried on eating their traditional, healthy diet: game, root vegetables and wild greens, berries, millet, sorghum and maize, and protein-rich insects like locusts. Today the resultant kaleidoscope - the famous "rainbow" - applies not only to the people but to the food, for one finds in South Africa the most extraordinary range of cuisines. Typical South African foods and dishes · Amasi, sour milk. · Biltong, a salty dried meat (similar to jerky). · Bobotie, a dish of Malay descent, is like meatloaf with raisins and with baked egg on top, and is often served with yellow rice, sambals, coconut, banana slices, and chutney. · Boerewors, a sausage that is traditionally braaied (barbecued). · Bunny chow, curry stuffed into a hollowed-out loaf of bread. · Chutney, a sweet sauce made from fruit that is usually poured on meat, especially a local brand called Mrs Ball's Chutney.

proposal for COC to share the new Al Rumaithy Building with MEOC should still be considered. Discussion 2 The writers of Text 31 and Text 32 both really have the same problem: they have failed to control the length of their sentences. The length of the sentences in any piece of writing has an important effect on the style of that text. If all the sentences are particularly short, as in Text 31, then the text will be abrupt, jerky and disconnected. On the other hand, if they are too long, as in Text 32, then the sentence will become very complex, and it may be difficult for the reader to follow the writer's meaning. Of course, any text will have some long or short sentences, but a good average length is probably around 2025 words, with two or three clauses. There are a number of methods in English of combining more than one idea into a single sentence, or conversely of dividing them into separate sentences

it. They may be combined with the "time fillers" (aa.., well, so) (And then she saw a--- ghost) The full stop may have different functions. · Overstopping--using the full stop very often. Full stop may separate words and phrases that normally do not form a sentence (I wouldn't call her beautiful. Or clever.) In the description of a single episode or a rapid succession of events, overstopping creates a peculiar, abrupt rhythm--jerky rhythm. · Understopping--too few full stops, it also renders the dynamic qualities of a large scene. Modernist writers use both devices very often. Good example--J.Joyce "Ulysses" with its 40 pages without a single full stop. Quotation marks may imply that these words belong to other characters and the author feels ironic about these words or indicates that these words are used in some special, narrow meaning. The indented line also belongs to punctuation marks

If the writer presents his description as one unbroken paragraph it means he attaches equal importance to every sentence. If a separate sentence is patterned as a paragraph it stands out as emotionally very prominent. From the rhythmical point of view alternation of long and short paragraphs adds to the rhythmical effect of the text. Long paragraphs in succession create a monotonous rhythmical effect. A sequence of very short paragraphs creates a jerky rhythm. 6. Capital letters are involved in antonomasia and personification. Words may contain capital letters only for emphasis or to suggest that they are pronounced loudly. In poetry it is a tradition to start every line with the capital letter. 7. The arrangement of lines on a page is a significant feature of modern poetry. The, so called, figure poems have appeared (e.g. poem has a shape of a star, a leaf, etc

include, though in an imperfect fashion, the two elements of secrecy and transformation that comprise the essential attributes of the science. And so cryptology was born. In its first 3,000 years, it did not grow steadily. Cryptology arose independently in many places, and in most of them it died the deaths of its civilizations. In other places, it survived, embedded in a literature, and from this the next generation could climb to higher levels. But progress was slow and jerky. More was lost than retained. Much of the history of cryptology of this time is a patchwork, a crazy quilt of unrelated items, sprouting, flourishing, withering. Only toward the Western Renaissance does the accreting knowledge begin to build up a momentum. The story of cryptology during these years is, in other words, exactly the story of mankind. China, the only high civilization of antiquity to use ideographic writing, seems never to have developed much real cryptography—
