Indians were imported to meet the labor shortage on the plantations after the slaves were freed, and agriculture was diversified to lessen dependence on sugar exports. A new constitution in 1884 marked the initial revival of local autonomy for Jamaica. Despite labor and other reforms, black riots recurred, notably those of 1938, which were caused mainly by unemployment and resentment against British racial policies. Jamaican blacks had been considerably influenced by the theories of black nationalism promulgated by the American expatriate Marcus Garvey. A royal commission investigating the 1938 riots recommended an increase of economic development funds and a faster restoration of representative government for Jamaica. In 1944 universal adult suffrage was introduced, and a new constitution provided for a popularly elected house of representatives. Economy

It seems as Christophine introduced the world to her and also the black culture of the Carribean, even though she told her that “this isn’t for béké. Bad, bad trouble come when béké meddle with that” (béké-white people). I think she loved Antoinette as her own daughter so it was natural for her to help her daughter however she could, even if it meant that she agreed to give Antionette potion for her husband. Liisa-Maria Pihlak, 12B Christophine was different than other Jamaican blacks-the way she talked and dressed was different and she was portrayed as kind of an outsider. She once was a slave, but now, to her family, she was a very loyal servant. She was very helpful, concerned and loyal towards the people she cared about. She appeared to share her nature with the Caribbean Islands, she seemed to somehow be a part of them. At the same time she feared greatly for her knowledge of the dark magic. I’d say that Christophine had quite an influential role in the book

Antoinette describes being followed by a young black girl who sings “go away white cockroach, go away“. Thirdly, the black women are portrayed as self-sufficient and able to do decisions without men, especially Christophine. She is a wise and loyal figure. Christophine introduces Antoinette to the black culture of the Caribbean and instills in her a sensitivity to nature and belief in the practices of obeah. She is an outsider because she dresses and speaks differently from the Jamaican blacks. She is a servant, but, unlike the other black servants who live at Coulibri, she remains loyal to the Cosway women. She provides a contrast to Annette because she exercises complete independence from men and distrusts their motives. Although she has three children by three different fathers, Christophine remains unmarried, saying “I thank my God. I keep my money. I don´t give it to no worthless man“. Times and rules change and in consequence, women change too

life and sets in motion this richly imagined, uproariously funny novel. Epic and intimate, hilarious and poignant, White Teeth is the story of two North London families-- one headed by Archie, the other by Archie's best friend, a Muslim Bengali named Samad Iqbal. Pals since they served together in World War II, Archie and Samad are a decidedly unlikely pair. Plodding Archie is typical in every way until he marries Clara, a beautiful, toothless Jamaican woman half his age, and the couple have a daughter named Irie (the Jamaican word for "no problem"). Samad --devoutly Muslim, hopelessly "foreign"-- weds the feisty and always suspicious Alsana in a prearranged union. They have twin sons named Millat and Magid, one a pot-smoking punk-cum-militant Muslim and the other an insufferable science nerd. The riotous and tortured histories of the Joneses and the Iqbals are fundamentally intertwined, capturing an empire's worth

By 1996, genre acts such as Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake were being signed to major labels. The original 2 Tone bands had emerged amid punk rock's second wave, but their music was much closer to its Jamaican roots--"ska at 78 rpm".[326] Ska punk bands in the third wave of ska created a true musical fusion between the genres. ...And Out Come the Wolves, the 1995 album by Rancid--which had evolved out of Operation Ivy--became the first record in this ska revival to be certified gold;[327] Sublime's self-titled 1996 album was certified platinum early in 1997.[322] Elsewhere, two popular Australian groups, skatecore band Frenzal Rhomb and pop punk act Bodyjar, also established followings in Japan
