"Tallinn old town"

There is a lot of medieval style houses and inns, courtyards, churches and museums and a lot more. Many have described Tallinn Old Town as mystic and addictive. Unlike other capital cities in Europe, Tallinn has managed to preserve the completeness and structure of it's medieval and Hanseatic origin. Even after 7 centuries, Town Hall Square still remains as the social heart of the city and is hosting many concerts and fairs. Town Hall on Town Hall square is the only intact Gothic town hall in Northern Europe, now operates as a museum and concert hall.On top of the Town Hall tower, you will see a beloved guard of Tallinn Old Town Vana Toomas. One of the most impressive churches in Old Town is 15th and 16th century, St. Olaf's Church (Oleviste) with it's 159m high tower, thes times it was the highest building in the world. in 1346. The Swedes came next in 1561. Tallinn weathered plague and the Great Northern War and became part of Russia in 1710. In 1918, Estonia declared independence from Russia and fought a bitter war against Bolshevik Russia. Independence didn’t last long, however, and the fledgling nation fell first to the Nazis and then the Soviets during World War II. Despite all this conquering, Tallinn’s historic core has survived remarkably intact. Much of the 14th century city wall still stands, including a couple of stretches where you can climb the narrow spiral staircases of the towers and end up on the medieval catwalk. The Viru Gates, flanked by thin pointed towers from the 14th century, makes a nice entrance into Old Town. Dominating the town atop Toompea Hill is Toompea Castle and Pikk Hermann Tower. It was used as the center of government since 1229 and is now the site of Estonia’s parliament

Tallinn Old Town

If you're looking for that mix of historic ambience and cutting-edge culture that defines Tallinn, you'll find it here. Built up from the 13th to 16th centuries, when Tallinn or Reval as it was known then was a thriving member of the Hanseatic trade league, this enclosed neighbourhood of colourful, gabled houses, half-hidden courtyards and grandiose churches is, quite rightly, the city's biggest tourist draw. And the fact that it's all neatly packaged within a mostly-intact city wall and dotted with guard towers gives it an extra dose of fairytale charm. http://www.tourism.tallinn.ee/eng/fpage/explore/attractions/old_town Kiek in de Kök Those interested in walls, towers, cannons and the like should drop into this museum of the town's defences. Originally the Great Pyramid was covered by casing stones that formed a smooth outer surface, and what is seen today is the underlying core structure. Some of the casing stones that once covered the structure can still be seen around the base. Castle was densely populated. Toompea has a radial net of streets – all streets start at the Dome Church Square and stretch to the walls of the fortifications. In 1684 Toompea suffered the most devastating fire of its history. Toompea had been affected by fires in earlier years, but the fire of 1684 was much larger in scale, destroying most of the buildings in the Great Castle, including the cathedral. The Small Castle escaped the fire intact. The fires are one reason why Toompea looks architecturally different and newer than the Lower Town. Toompea Castle A wooden fortification was originally built on the same hill in the 9th century, but was toppled by the Danes shortly after 1219 - who then constructed an impressive stone edifice, much of which still remains today. ideas. Conversely, a town that gets praised for being "solid" or representing "traditional values" may be a fine place to live, but it's never going to succeed as a startup hub. The 2004 presidential election, though a disaster in other respects, conveniently supplied us with a county-by-county map of such places. To attract the young, a town must have an intact center. In most American cities the center has been abandoned, and the growth, if any, is in the suburbs. Most American cities have been turned inside out. But none of the startup hubs has: not San Francisco, or Boston, or Seattle. They all have intact centers. My guess is that no city with a dead center could be turned into a startup hub. Young people don't want to live in the suburbs. Within the US, the two cities I think could most easily be turned into new silicon valleys

Protoplasts, plant cells that have been stripped of their protective cell walls, will take up pure DNA when treated with certain membrane-active agents or with electroporation, a rapid pulse of high-voltage direct current. Once inside the cell, the DNA is integrated and the foreign gene will express. These two techniques largely depend upon the development of protoplast systems that retain the capacity to regenerate intact plants. Transgenic corn, rice, and soybean have been produced with these techniques, especially electroporation. Success rates, however, are low, and the techniques not very reproducible. DNA can also be microinjected into target plant cells using very thin glass needles in a method similar to that used with animals. Microinjection, however, has produced only a few transgenic plants. The technique is laborious, technically difficult, and limited to the number of cells actually injected.

Famous castles of Scotland

Holes in the upper wall would have supported a timber bretasche, a projecting structure serving as an extended battlement. This curtain wall was built of coursed ashlar, and had only two openings in its length. The main gate was an arched opening with a simple timber door. The second opening was a small postern gate in the west wall, later blocked. In the later part of the 13th century, the castle was strengthened by the addition of four round towers, of which only the north-west survives intact. These three-storey towers had strong splayed bases, with arrow slits below the crenellated parapet. A portcullis was added to the main gate. Craigievar Castle is a pinkish harled castle six miles south of Alford, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is currently the seat of the Clan Sempill. The setting is among scenic rolling foothills of the Grampian Mountains. The contrast of its massive lower story

cathedral was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. The ruins were demolished and a new design by Wren, the one we see today, was built. The only surviving artifact from the old Cathedral was a statue of John Donne which can now be seen in the South Aisle. Building was completed 1710. During the Second World War's Blitz, St Paul's Cathedral became a great symbol of how Londoners could 'take it'. After each night's bombing, there was St Paul's, still intact. That is not to say it survived unscathed. A bomb hit the north transept and another destroyed the High Altar which was replaced by one commemorating the dead of the First and Second World Wars. The chapel behind the High Altar, also damaged, was restored. It is called the American Chapel and dedicated to the Americans who died in Britain during the Second World War. Formaldehyde

Being normal components of intermediary metabolism, neither formaldehyde nor formate are stored to any significant extent in any tissue of the body. Formate is excreted in the urine (primarily as formic acid), incorporated into other cellular molecules, or oxidized to carbon dioxide and exhaled. Formaldehyde vapors are readily absorbed from the respiratory tract. Due to rapid metabolism to formate, little, if any, intact formaldehyde can be found in the blood of humans or animals exposed to formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is also readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and meets with the same metabolic fate as formaldehyde after inhalation exposure. The studies available in the open literature suggest that very little formaldehyde is absorbed via the dermal route. In all cases, absorption appears to be limited to cell layers immediately adjacent to the point of contact. Entry of

Here is how the NSA refers to sunflower seeds/kernel: · In-shell means the seed is left intact with the "meat" of the seed still in the shell. It is normally roasted and seasoned. It is eaten as a snack by cracking the shell with one's teeth, discarding the hull and eating the delicious morsel within. In the punched paper tape which is frequently used to run teletypewriters, marks are represented by holes and spaces by leaving the tape intact. To read the tape, metal fingers push through the holes to make contact and thereby send pulses; where there is a space, the paper keeps the fingers from completing the circuit. Vernam suggested punching a tape of key characters and electromechanically adding its pulses to those of the plaintext characters, the "sum" to constitute the ciphertext.
