Newspapers and magazines play an imoportant role in today's society and are capable of
influencing people's lives in many ways. The new electronic media have become even
more influential in shaping people's opinions, attitudes and behaviour. However, does the
free press offer a valuable service, or is it, as American journalist, Edward Egglestone
said, "organised gossip"?
On a personal level, the media can be very entertaining and informative. Reading about
