Tallinn

The bombing of the city by the Soviet air forces on 9 March 1944 left over 20,000 people homeless. During the Russian occupation which followed (and which lasted for five decades) attempts were made to Russify the local people. Large scale industry was developed in Tallinn, workers were resettled from Russia and new blocks of flats sprang up on the outskirts to provide housing for the newcomers. Tallinn was the biggest grain-handling port in the Soviet Union. Russian speakers outnumbered Estonians in Tallinn. Estonia re-established its independence on 20 August 1991. There is still a large block of granite on Toompea which recalls the days when people barricaded Lossiplats (Castle Square) to prevent Soviet tanks gaining access. Today, Tallinn is the largest city in Estonia, with a population of about 400,000....

Education

All were paralyzed by the failure to act proactively, resulting in a lot of finger pointing. But there is a second lesson from Andrew: Be careful how you build, for the storm will show what sort of work has been done. The vast devastation was in large measure due to the faulty housing construction of the building boom during the 1980s. Yet some houses experienced minimal damage, primarily those built by Habitat for Humanity, the agency with whom former president Jimmy Carter is affiliated. How we build during periods of great change, determines what lasts and what doesn't. Interestingly, the Great Mississippi Flood of 1993 found FEMA prepared. The point of this illustration is that in the years ahead we are going to be exper...

Margaret Thatcher

In the 1950s Margaret Thatcher trained as a lawyer, specialising in taxation. She was elected to Parliament in 1959 as Member of Parliament for Finchley, which was a constituency represented in the House of Commons. In 1961 Thatcher became the Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance. She also got the job of Conservative spokeswoman on housing and land. Thatcher was one of few Conservative Members of Parliament to support decriminalising male homosexuality, and she voted in favour of legalising abortion. When the Conservative party under Edward Heath won the 1970 general election, Thatcher became an Education Minister. During her first months of work she was forced to make a cut in the education budget and therefore she abolished universal free milk for school-children. This caused...

Connecting Ideas Logically and Effectively

They could also be run by individual line departments. However, this would cause more disruption. The company might also lose some production. Therefore, line managers may refuse to cooperate. It has been decided to finance the construction of a further COC housing complex which will be located in the vicinity of the main offices and will provide extra accommodation for twenty families, but the 50% increase in manpower which is expected to have occurred by 2010 means that the company's provision of accommodation will still be inadequate, and so the proposal for COC to share the new Al Rumaithy Building with MEOC should still be considered. Discussion 2 The writers of Text 31 and Text 32 both really h...

Social Problems

In various historical and present-day societies institutionalized religions have established systems of earthly justice which punish crimes against the divine will and specific devotional, organizational and other rules under specific codes, such as Islamic sharia or Roman Catholic canon law. Homelessness Homelessness is the condition and social category of people who lack housing, because they cannot afford, or are otherwise unable to maintain, regular, safe, and adequate shelter. The term "homelessness" may also include people whose primary nighttime residence is in a homeless shelter, in an institution that provides a temporary residence for individuals intended to be institutionalized, or in a public or private place not designed for use as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings. A small number of people...

Money

Many goods have served as money. Money is an important social institution. A complex society simply could not function without some kind of common medium of exchange. Money also allows people to specialize in what they do best and thus increase their efficiency in ways that benefit both themselves and others. People no longer have to produce everything that they need in the way of food, clothes, and housing . They can concentrate on what they do best, exchange that good or service for money, and then exchange that money for whatever else they want. In conclusion I would like to say I hate people saying money's not important at all... That there are some more important things in the world like friendship, love and so on. If you think so, then you are either a rather rich person or just an naive young kid who haven't seen a life yet and don't und...

Kolosseum

Capable of seating 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. As well as the gladiatorial games, other public spectacles were held there, such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing , workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine. It has been estimated that about 500,000 people and over a million wild animals died in the Colosseum games.Although in the 21st century it stays partially ruined due to damage caused by devastating earthquakes and stone- robbers, the Colosseum is an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome and its breakthrough achievements in earthquake engineering. It is one of...

School system in the USA

There are Christian boarding schools and boarding schools for troubled teens. Some boarding schools offer the option to be a day student without boarding while offering the same quality boarding school education. Universities Universities are quite expensive with prices rising every year. Public university can cost around $6,000 to $10,000 in tuition alone with housing , books, and other academic necessities costing much more. The academic school year usually runs from September to June with an optional summer quarter which is another expense. Private university is much more expensive with tuition costing somewhere between $20,000 and even up to $50,000 annually. Scholarships and financial aid help students attend the university of their choice, but most students must take loans to complete their educat...

Londoni Referaat

Within the City of Westminster, the entertainment district of the West End has its focus around Leicester Square, where London and world film premieres are held, and Piccadilly Circus, with its giant electronic advertisements. London's theatre district is here, as are many cinemas, bars, clubs and restaurants, including the city's Chinatown district, and just to the east is Covent Garden, an area housing speciality shops.
