N o w the movie leaves the framing device to fully enter the main story and the
w o r l d o f the T i t a n i c . W e see the ship in her n e w - m i n t e d glory for the first
time. T h e bustling dock is the O R D I N A R Y W O R L D stage on which the main
protagonists or H E R O E S , y o u n g Rose and Jack, are introduced. Rose gets an
elaborate E N T R A N C E as one of the beautiful possessions in the entourage of
Cal Hockley, her fiancé a n d the S H A D O W or villain o f the piece, a sneering
"heavy" straight out o f a V i c t o r i a n m e l o d r a m a . W e also meet the sub-villain,
H o c k l e y ' s henchman Lovejoy, who executes Cal's arrogant wishes.
Our first sight of Rose is her hand in a delicate white glove, emerging from
the motorcar. T h e hands of the lovers, twining and separating, will become a con
tinuing visual thread
