Burns. 9. What is haggis? Haggis is a kind of sausage made from the heart and other organs of a sheep. 10. What's Hogmanay? When is it? What do they do? Hogmanay is a New Year, it's celebrated on the 31th of December every year. Scottish people blow bagpipe music and dance in the street all night long. At midnight, there are fireworks and everyone sings a Robert Burns song `Auld land syne'. 11. What do you know about Highland Games? What do athletes wear? Almost every weekend in the summer there are highland games somewhere in Scotland. A lot of people all over the world come to see them or come to take part of them. There are over three thousand bagpipers and drummers who play all day long. There are also highland dancing competitions as well as events like throwing the hammer or throwing a large three as far as possible. Athletes wear traditional kilts. 12

Kilt

Kilt The kilt is a knee-length garment with pleats at the rear, originating in the traditional dress of men and boys in the Scottish Highlands of the 16th century. Although the kilt is most often worn on formal occasions and at Highland games and sports events, it has also been adapted as an item of fashionable informal male clothing in recent years, returning to its roots as an everyday garment. Typically, a portion of the belted plaid hangs down to about the knees with the rest of the material being wrapped up around one's upper body in a variety of ways and pinned or otherwise secured to keep it in place. The first clear reference to the kilt occurs in the year 1594.In that year, a group of

Henry Ford

Ford insisted that he would give up his entire fortune, estimateted at over $30 million, if it would bring peace to the world. He even offered prizes and investments for peaceful endeavours of various kinds. By 1917, even though Ford remained commited to peace, the German announcement of unrestricted submarine warfare against all shipping suspected of carrying material to the allied side led Ford to do an about turn. Instead of executing his original threat to burn down Highland Park rather than use it for war, he asserted that the entire plant would be turned over for war production. With this move Ford made $29 million dollars profit, although he promised to not take a cent of 'blood money'. Slaid 3. Depressions and Downsizings The cash-flow crises caught Ford dangerously in 1921. He had to change a lot, not to say everythin. He slashed car prizes and cut administration staff but it wasn't enough. Ford had to close down the Company to remove his financial crises

Vasaraheide

Vasaraheide Nimi "vasaraheide" tuleb sellest, et kunagi ammu visatigi vasaraid ja haamreid. Varasemate vasaratega võisteldakse siiani Scottish Highland mängudel. Mida see endast kujutab? Vasaraheidet sooritatakse ringis, mille diameeter on 2,135 meetrit. Vasar ise koosneb metallkuulist, käepidemest ja neid ühendavast traadist. Vasaraheitel võetakse ringjooneliselt liikudes hoogu, samal ajal hoides vasara käepidemest kahe käega kinni, et saavutada viske hetkel maksimaalne kuuli liikumise kiirus. Samuti, et teha pikk heide, keerutatakse vasarat hoovõtu alguses ka pea kohal. Heitjad teevad ühe kuni neli ringi.

Planet venus

There are strong winds at the cloud tops but winds at the surface are very slow, no more than a few kilometers per hour. The surface of Venus retains a constant temperature between day and night and between the equator and the poles. We can't see the surface of Venus from Earth, because it is covered with thick clouds that strongly reflect sunlight. However, space missions to Venus have shown us that its surface is covered with craters, over 1600 major volcanoes, mountains, large highland terrains, and vast lava plains. Venus is usually visible with the unaided eye. On June 8 2004, Venus passed directly between the Earth and the Sun, appearing as a large black dot travelling across the Sun's disk. This event is known as a "transit of Venus" and is very rare: the last one was in 1882, the next one is in 2012 but after than you'll have to wait until 2117. Venus orbits the Sun at an average distance of about 108 million km, and rotates once every 243 days

Scotland

Separated by the North Channel, the island of Ireland lies 30 kilometres (20 mi) from the southwest tip of the Scottish mainland. Norway is located 305 kilometres (190 mi) to the northeast of Scotland across the North Sea. The Atlantic Ocean, which fringes the coastline of western and northern Scotland and its islands, influences the temperate, maritime climate of the country. The topography of Scotland is distinguished by the Highland Boundary Fault a geological rock fracture which traverses the Scottish mainland from Helensburgh to Stonehaven. The faultline separates two distinctively different physiographic regions; namely the Highlands to the north and west and the lowlands to the south and east. The more rugged Highland region contains the majority of Scotland's mountainous terrain, including the highest peak , Ben Nevis. When Vikings started raiding, the Irish were forced to unite. The one king who managed to rule the whole Ireland effectively was Brian Boru. Scotland Scotland has two different societies because the mountainous regions separated the country into lowland and highland. Lowland society was easily influenced by the changes taking place in England. People in the highland society were more tied to their own family groups. Scotland was populated by 4 different groups : the Picts the main and the oldest group, the Scots, the Britons and the Angles. In 843 the Pictish and the Scottish kingdoms were united under a Scottish king. They all shared a common Celtic culture, language and background. They grew crops and kept animals. And

Agriculture

Agriculture About 77 per cent of the land area of Britain is under agricultural use of some sort. However, the sector's role in the economy is much smaller than in most other major industrial countries, in terms of employment and contribution to GDP, reflecting Britain's early industrialization. Agriculture employs less than 2 per cent of the population and contributes 2 per cent of GDP. However, it achieves high levels of efficiency and productivity. Britain is self-sufficient in 58 per cent of all types of food and animal feed. Large parts of Britain, notably in Scotland and Wales, are suitable only for grazing. Overall, in the first half of the 1990s about 39 per cent of agricultural land was under pasture, another 27 per cent under rough grazing, and the remainder under crops or lying fallow. Over half of all full-time farms are devoted to dairy or beef farming, or sheep. Cattle and sheep con...

Culture Scottish music is a significant aspect of the nation's culture, with both traditional and modern influences. An example of a traditional Scottish instrument is the Great Highland Bagpipe, a wind instrument consisting of three drones and a melody pipe (called the chanter), which are fed continuously by a reservoir of air in a bag.Scottish literature includes text written in English, Scottish Gaelic, Scots, French, and Latin. The poet and songwriter Robert Burns wrote in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and in a "light" Scots dialect which is more accessible to a wider audience.Sport is an important element in Scottish culture,

This is the part where many big towns are situated, including Edinburgh and Glasgow. More than three quarters of Scotland's population live in that area. A big part of Wales is also mountainous and in England the Pennine Range which is also called as the backbone of England because of its location. The rest of the country is rather undulating and not even the large agricultural plains in East Anglia are perfectly flat. In Ireland all the highland areas are situated on the coastal areas but there are no peaks over 1100 m. Great Britain is rich in rivers but they are rather short. The longest rivers are the Severn, which flows into the Bristol Channel and the Thames which flows just through the city of London. Both of them are an important part of the inland transport network for transporting such products as coal, iron ore and steel. The largest lake in Great Britain, Loch Lomond, lies in Scotland. 13th century, king Edward I finally conquered the last remaining counties in north and west Wales. To appease the Welsh, Edward's son (the future Edward II), who had been born in Wales, was made Prince of Wales. So the tradition of giving the title `Prince(ess) of Wales' to the heir of the British Monarch continues to the present day. 4. Relief The island is just under a thousand kilometers long and under five hundred kilometers wide. The most mountainous region is of course Scotland with its highland and highest peak: Ben Nevis 1343 m. Scotland also has a wide lowland are between the Grampians and Southern Uplands, where most of the largest cities and population are located. Much of Wales is also mountainous and in England the Pennine Range extends 224 kilometres. The rest of England tends to be quite bumpy, for not even the large plains of East Anglia are perfectly flat. In Ireland all the highland areas are around the edge, but there are no peaks that surpass the height of one kilometer

Scotland

Roman influence The written protohistory of Scotland began with the arrival of the Roman Empire in southern and central Great Britain, when the Romans occupied what is now England and Wales, administering it as a province called Britannia. Roman invasions and occupations of southern Scotland were a series of brief interludes. In 834 AD the general Gnaeus Julius Agricola defeated the Caledonians at the battle of Mons Graupius, and Roman forts were briefly set along the Gask Ridge close to the Highland line (none are known to have been constructed beyond that line). Three years after the battle the Roman armies had withdrawn to the Southern Uplands. They erected Hadrian's Wall to control tribes on both sides of the wall, and the Limes Britannicus became the northern border of the empire, although the army held the Antonine Wall in the Central Lowlands for two short periods--the last of these during the time of Emperor Septimius Severus from 208 until 210.

Colvin sold the English patent for this machine for $5000, and, at least 1500 machines were sold in England, according to an article in The Agricultural Gazette. • In Scotland, William Murchland invented a very successful vacuum milker in 1889, which hung suspended under the cow. He was granted a U.S. patent in 1892. • The Murchland milker, along with the famous "Thistle" milker, was extensively tested by the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland in 1898. • Numerous other hand pumped suction milkers were devised in the next thirty years, with the foot operated Mehring machine being, perhaps, the ultimate in pre- pulsator suction milkers. • Two cows could be milked at the same time, using this machine, with the operator sitting on it's bench, between the cows, and working the foot levers to provide vacuum. • The Mehring foot power machine was still marketed well

Eesti rahvapillid

U. Toomendi, J.Hivask ja V.Maala. 5 Torupill Erinevaid torupilli liike on enam kui tosina jagu. Kõigil neil on erinev ehitus, heli ja ajalugu. Kuigi torupillide päritolu ei ole päris kindel on päritolupiirkonnaks peetud Iraani ja Indiat. Eestisse jõudis torupill 14. sajandi paiku. Torupilli tüüpe on maailmas palju, alates hülgemaost meisterdatud Läänemaa mallist, lõpetades esindusliku Soti highland pipe'iga. Kõiki neid seob iseloomulik kõla, mis saavutatakse erineva arvu meloodiale kaasa jörisevate burdoonide ehk torude ja vilede hääle abil. Eesti torupillil on tavaliselt neid torusid üks kuni kolm, kuid tõelistel siniverelistel Soti ja Iiri paraadinstrumentidel märgatavalt rohkem. Torupill oli praktiliselt ainuke puhkpill, mida võis kasutada aasta ringi. Torupill koosneb neljast osast : nahast õhukott, õhupuhumistoru, mänguvile ja bassvile.

The population of the UK is 58.6 million and area is 244,110 sq km. Britain has a temperate humid climate. Its characteristic features are mild winters, warm summer, no temperature extremes, abundant rain all year round and frequent changes of weather. The mild climate is partly due to the warm Gulf Stream and partly to the south westerly winds. Occasional winds from the east in winter may bring cold and dry weather. The distribution of rainfall is influenced by the Atlantic Stream. The mountainous areas of the north and west have more rain than the lowlands of the south and east. Wales is located on a peninsula in central-west Britain. The entire area of Wales is about 20,779 km². Wales borders by England to the e...

(History...)

Britain history.

The largest and richest city in Europe was London, with a population of around a million. It was also an important financial centre. For about 200 years Britain had been a leading country in the world's slave trade, but this finally came to an end in 1807, largely thanks to the politician William Wilberforce, who won his fight in Britain and then devoted the rest of his life to ban the slave trade throughout the world. Between 1810 and 1820 the Highland Clearances took place in Scotland. Local crofters were forced to live their homelands if they couldn't pay the high rents they had been charged. These lands were given over to flocks of sheep. By the end of the decade the Highlands had become a wilderness. The 19th century was generally a time of great social reform: the slave trade was abolished, the employment of women and children was regulated by laws, primary schools

ASPECTS OF BRITISH HISTORY

Steady south-west winds blow across the current and bring warmth in winter. In summer, the ocean waters are cooler than the land. Winds over the waters come to Britain as refreshing breezes. The sea winds also bring plentiful rains. Britain is not as cold as most places so far north. Summers are mild, with daytime highs about 220C in the south, about 180C in Scotland. Winters are cool – night-time temperatures drop nearly to freezing, but rarely much below, except in the colder Scottish highland areas. Within Britain there are differences of climate and rainfall between north and south, east and west. The north is on average 5 0C cooler than the south.
