Temperate deciduous forests, woodlands and shrub

There are often some evergreens, such as hemlock, spruce, and fir growing amongst them. Decidous forests have usually 3-5 layers of plants; Top layer, or canopy: tall deciduous trees. Although the canopy is quite thick, it does allow sunlight to reach the forest floor, which encourages the other layers to grow. The 2nd layer: saplings and shorter kinds of trees The 3rd layer, or understorey: shrubs. The 4th layer: forest herbs, such as wildflowers and berries. In spring, before the leaves develop on the deciduous trees, these herbs bloom and grow quickly while they are getting a lot of sunlight. The 5th layer: mosses and lichens that grow on tree trunks. Lianas such as wild grape, poison ivy, and Virginia creeper climb the trees to flower and fruit high in the forest canopy. Plant adaptations: The plants have adapted so that they can survive in this biome. The leaves of deciduous trees are broad and quite light

Estonian national dish

Sauerkraut Sauerkraut is finely shredded cabbage that has been fermented by various lactic acid bacteria, including Leuconostoc, Lactobacillus, and Pediococcus. It has a long shelf-life and a distinctive sour flavor, both of which result from the lactic acid that forms when the bacteria ferment the sugars in the cabbage. It is therefore not to be confused with coleslaw, which receives its acidic taste from vinegar. People of Estonia like sauerkraut very much. They definitely a great dish for Christmas, because it`s really good to eat it with potatoes or something like that. Tartu Hanseatic Days

During the festival the Old Town of Tartu is divided into three areas, each representing a different historical era. Most of the events take place in Jaani town which takes people back into the hanseatic times. The streets are filled with stalls where artisans are selling their products and there are also many different activities for children and adults. The River town is all about ancient times. There are blacksmiths demonstrating their job and healers selling different herbs. In Rae town people can get back to the modern days and relax in a restaurant, watch different dance and music performances or go shopping in the large marketplace. Easter traditions in Estonia

Easter traditions in Estonia Easter traditions are rather young in Estonia. Our grandmothers took the eastern habits from BalticGermans without taking over the meanings painted eggs just seemed so beautiful. So for us, their grandchildren, painting eggs has no connection with religion traditions. It is more like a way of expressing one's creativity. We use different colors and techniques: painting with herbs, watercolors, markers, special colors etc. There aren't any certain patterns to use, everyone can do it any way they like. We also give colored eggs as presents to friends and children are cracking the eggs. More than Easter Estonians have traditionally celebrated a spring. There is a day near Easter called Paastumaarjapäev (the Day of Virgin Mary and Fast) which is a women's day. Women and girls go together to swim in a spring in the sunrise it will

Witch Child Summary

their lynching attentions to her. The book is written as a series of diary entries that chronicle her many adventures as a 17th century orphan with genuine knowledge of witchcraft. Mary is packed off to join Puritans headed to the New World. While they search for religious freedom, Mary searches for a fresh start and a chance to live a life untainted by the suspicion of witchcraft. She is informally adopted by good friends who accept her strong-willed nature and and knowledge of herbs, medicines, and midwifery. To escape the oppressive atmosphere of the village and the stringent Puritan expectations, Mary retreats to the woods where she befriends a local Native American boy. Despite dire warnings from all who care about her, Mary persists in keeping her journal, gallivanting through the woods, and making dangerous comments. Even though Mary has assisted her community on numerous occasions, when things begin to go poorly for the village, accusatory fingers are quickly pointed

Eating habits in Estonia

Traditional Estonian food has its roots firmly in the countryside, relying heavily on pork, potatoes and garden variety vegetables. The main culinary influences were from Germans, who ruled over Estonia for so many centuries. The eating habits of the Estonian population are related to the season, which severely affect the availability of fresh food. The spring and summer are the seasons of fresh food, in this period are used vegetables, berries and herbs, with the warmer climate the Estonians also like to cook meat grilled outdoors. During the winter are used mushrooms, jams, and preserved foods. Among the typical Estonian dishes are: Baltic fish in acid sauce, pork with sauerkraut and boiled potatoes, blood sausage and barley, marinade anguilla, boiled pork in jelly, tongue, smoked fish and a kind of dry cake-like barley bread. Milk and all kinds of dairy products such as fermented milk, yogurt and various

Our knowledge of herbs and medication lies in our memories. There aren't very many books, which talk about our ancestors' ways of healing. friends and family with an invitation to the wedding. The bride's father does the same thing to his friends and family and the bride goes around the village on Saturday, but instead of wine she gives out sweets. Before the weddings there are all sorts of traditions. It all starts with raising a wedding flag at the groom's house. Then people come with the flag to the bride's house, where the bride's mother offers the groom wine and herbs for his lapel. After that the bride leaves for church with one male relative and the rest of the quests follow her to church on foot. It is also a custom that the bride's male relatives slap the groom on his back, it is known as a way of welcoming the groom into the family. Another tradition before the weddings is a "baby rolling" tradition. During this thing the friends' and relatives' babies are being gently rolled from one side to another on the matrimonial bed

Different types of forests and their forms of usage.

Almost 50% forests of the world are tropical and subtropical in nature. Rainforests are characterized by high rainfall. They are home to two-thirds of all the living animal and plant species on the planet. Tall, broad-leaved evergreen trees are the dominant plants, forming a leafy canopy over the forest floor. The undergrowth or understory in a rainforest generally consists of shade-tolerant shrubs, herbs, ferns, small trees and large woody vines. The temperature ranges from 5°C to 50°C. Human uses of tropical and subtropical forests: o Habitation - Humans have and do exploit rainforests for food and shelter in several parts of the world. o Cultivated foods and spices - Coffee, chocolate, bananas etc. all originally came from tropical rainforests, and are still mostly grown in regions that were formerly primary forest.

The Tudor Dynasty

made their living from farming. Under Tudor rule England became a more peaceful and richer place. Towns grew larger and the mining of coal, tin and lead became very popular. The poor The poor had to work hard and struggled to survive. They worked six days a week and only had holy days and public holidays off work. They ate coarse grey bread made from rye and barley. Soups were made from vegetables and herbs. Meat was a luxury but poor people sometimes kept animals to provide milk, cheese and eggs. Life for the poor in Tudor times was harsh. When the harvest failed it was tempting for poor people to steal food. When people did break the law, they risked public flogging or being hanged. Tudor Toilets Toilets were called 'Privies' and were not very private at all. They were often just a piece of wood over a bowl or a hole in the ground.

The Great Plague In London

They also wore a primitive gas mask in the shape of bird's beak. People thought that the plague was spread by birds. There may have been a belief that if they dressed in a bird mask, they will have the ability to draw the plague away from the victim and onto the habiliment the plague doctor wore. The gas helmet also included eyepieces which were made out of red glass. People thought those who wore that mask would be safe from evil. The beak of the helmet was filled with aromatic herbs and spices to overpower the miasmas or "bad air" which was also thought to carry the plague. At the very least, it may have dulled the smell of unburied corpses, sputum, and ruptured in plague victims. (Grand Gallimaufry homepage: http://sylvaansuz.wordpress.com/2009/12/09/the-plague-doctors-garb/) The overcoat worn by the plague doctor was tucked in behind the beak mask at the neckline to minimize skin exposure. It extended to the feet, and was often coated head to toe in suet or wax

The Middle Ages

not the couple themselves. Once married, a woman had to accept her husband children, preferably sons. The wife of a noble had other responsibilities. When her lord was away, she was in charge of the manor & the village lands, the servants & villagers, the harvest & animals. She had to defend the manor when attacked, to run the household, welcome visitors, store enough food for winter, was expected to have knowledge of herbs & plants to make medicine, visit the poor & the sick etc. She had little time for her own children who were often sent away at the age of 8, the boys to ,,be made into men". The peasant women were busy making food, cloth, clothes, worked in the fields, looked after children, geese, pigs, sheep, made cheese & grew vegetables. The family home was dark & smelly, the animals often shared the family shelter at night. A woman's position improved when her husband died,

reaction time, impaired speech, balance system distortion, impaired memory, lack of concentration. Some become more aggressive others, on the contrary very calm. Alcohol also causes dehydration and behaves as a very destructive element to various human body organs liver, heart, kidneys. It destroys brain cells more actively and stimulates accumulation of fat cells. There are minor positive effects. Wine, for instance, improves blood circulation and some alcoholic drinks made from herbs are used in some unorthodox medical treatments among various nations with long established traditions. rodentlike front teeth and powerful claws. Although mainly crepuscular and nocturnal, wombats will also venture out to feed on cool or overcast days. They are not as easily seen as many animals, but leave ample evidence of their passage, treating fences as a minor inconvenience to be gone through or under and leaving distinctive cubic scats. Wombats are herbivores, their diet consisting mostly of grasses, sedges, herbs, bark and roots. The Tasmanian devil and the Tasmanian wolf are the only carnivores among marsupials and are almost extinct. Tasmanian devil is a size of a small dog, but stocky and muscular, the Tasmanian Devil is the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world. It is characterised by its black fur, offensive odour when stressed, extremely loud and disturbing screech, and viciousness when feeding. It is known to both hunt

The Witch Trials in Salem

Medical students spent years studying Plato, Aristotle and Christian theology and a doctor rarely saw any patients at all, and no experimentation of any kind was taught. Medicine was sharply differentiated from surgery, which was almost everywhere considered a degrading, menial craft, and the dissection of bodies was almost unheard of. It was witches who developed an extensive understanding of bonnes and muscles, herbs and drugs. By the 14th century, the medical profession's campaign against urban, educated women healers was virtually complete throughout Europe. Male doctors had won a clear monopol over the practice of medicine among the upper classes. They were ready to take on a key role in the elmination of the great mass of female healers the ,,witches." The partnership between Church, State and medical profession reached full bloom in the witch trials

ENGLISH TOPICS - palju teemasid inglise keele riigieksami kordamiseks

British Cuisine Some people criticize English food. They say it's unimaginable, boring, tasteless, it's chips with everything and totally overcooked vegetables. The basic ingredients, when fresh, are so full of flavour that British haven't had to invent sauces to disguise their natural taste. What can compare with fresh pees or new potatoes just boiled and served with butter? Why drown spring lamb in wine or cream and spices, when with just one or two herbs it is absolutely delicious? If you ask foreigners to name some typically English dishes, they will probably say "Fish and chips" then stop. It is disappointing, but true that, there is no tradition in England of eating in restaurants, because the food doesn't lend itself to such preparation. English cooking is found at home. So it is difficult to a good English restaurant with a reasonable prices. In most cities in Britain you'll find Indian, Chinese, French and Italian r...

There was no essential statistic connection between moisture regime and PUA. Statistically, species pool was substantially higher in moist and 44 wetter community types. But statistically it was different in different management regimes species pool decreased from regime A towards regime D. In the unsystematically mowed areas (B and C regime), and in areas that had not been mowed for a long time (D regime), dominated herbs. Mat-forming graminoids were abundantly represented in the unsystematic regime areas. Both on regularly mowed areas and long-time unmown areas dominated tussock-forming graminoids, but they differed for species and size. In case of regular mowing they were graminaceous growing in lower herb layer, in unmown areas they were species that form large dwarf shrubs like tussock grass and tussock sedge. 45 TÄNUAVALDUSED Töö autor tänab prof

None of these labels mean that something is safe or e ective. Legal herbs can kill you just as dead as illegal narcotics. Supplements, often unpatentable molecules and therefore unappealing for drug development, can decrease cholesterol from 222 to 147 in four weeks, as I have done, or they can be inert and do absolutely nothing.
