a go-between, embodying the spirit of the animals his people depended on for life.
A physical catharsis or emotional reaction is hard to avoid when going into
a deep cave, even today. If you go as they went, long ago, with only fitful candles to
light your way down the narrow tunnels, you can't help but feel the weight of the
earth and imagine the forces and beings that might be lurking there in the endless
darkness just outside the glow of your flame. There is still a sense of wonder when
coming out into a big cavern deep in the earth, especially when its walls are painted
