The Most Influential Figures in British History

The Most Influential Figures in British History There are many important historical figures, who have helped shape Britain into what it is today. In my opinion Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Winston Churchill are the ones who stand out and have had the biggest impact on British history. Firstly, Elizabeth I made a great impression on British history as she kept England from major wars during her reign, the kingdom expanded and she supported culture. The rule of Elizabeth I can be called a peaceful time as England did not enter any huge conflicts. She managed to keep good relations with other great countries. However, the defeat of the Spanish Armada left no one questioning the superiority of the British navy. In addition, the kingdom’s territories grew during her reign, Virginia in America being named after „The Virgin Queen“. Queen Elizabeth I also valued culture

They also designed Brooklyn's Prospect Park. The park, which receives approximately thirty-five million visitors annually, is the most visited urban park in the United States. It was opened on 770 acres (3.1 km2) of city-owned land and was expanded to 843 acres. The park is maintained by the Central Park Conservancy, a private, not-for-profit organization that manages the park under a contract with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Truth or Dare ?

Rules One player starts the game by asking another player, "Truth or dare?" If the queried player answers, "truth," then the questioning player asks a question, usually embarrassing, of the queried player. If the queried player answers, "dare," then the questioning player asks the queried to do something, also usually embarrassing. After answering the question or doing the dare, the queried player asks "truth or dare?" of another player and the game proceeds as before. The game may be expanded upon by adding additional options to choose from, such as making the dare apply to both the questioner and the queried, or incorporating Spin the Bottle to select the next person to be asked; this results in many different "variants" of the game, limited only by the players' creativity. The game's title is sometimes extended to reflect additional options, for example: "truth, dare, double-dare, kiss, torture or promise". When double-dare is chosen, the person chosen is

Marriage is an outdated institution

Marriage is an outdated institution Is marriage a wonderful institution nowadays, when the meaning of this word is totally different from the meaning that expanded many years ago? Is this document which indicate the union of two people who have given a permission to love each other in sickness and in health, until the death do they part is the evidence of everlasting love? I think the answer for these questions is No and I would talk about my opinions why i think so. First of all, i think everyone know that the rate of divorces is quite high. For example, 50% percent of first marriages, 67% of second and 74% of third marriages end in divorce in America.

Images of Chile

Chile's unusual, ribbon-like shape -- 4,300 kilometres long and on average 175 kilometres wide -- has given it a hugely varied climate, ranging from the world's driest desert -- the Atacama -- in the north, through a Mediterranean climate in the centre, to a snow-prone Alpine climate in the south, with glaciers, fjords and lakes. The Pacific forms the country's entire western border, with a coastline that stretches over 6,435 kilometres. Chile expanded in the late 19th century, when it incorporated its northern and southern regions. Southern Chile is rich in forests and grazing lands and features a string of volcanoes and lakes. The southern coast is a labyrinth of fjords, inlets, canals, twisting peninsulas, and islands. Prior to the coming of the Spanish in the 16th century, northern Chile was under Inca rule while the indigenous Araucanians inhabited central and southern Chile. Although Chile

San Francisco

1769, the first documented European visit to San Francisco Bay. Upon independence from Spain in 1821, the area became part of Mexico. Under Mexican rule, the mission system gradually ended and its lands began to be privatized. In 1835, Englishman William Richardson erected the first independent homestead, near a boat anchorage around what is today Portsmouth Square. Together with Alcalde Francisco de Haro, he laid out a street plan for the expanded settlement, and the town, named Yerba Buena, began to attract American settlers. Commodore John D. Sloat claimed California for the United States on July 7, 1846, during the Mexican-American War, and Captain John B. Montgomery arrived to claim Yerba Buena two days later. Yerba Buena was renamed San Francisco on January 30 of the next year, and Mexico officially ceded the territory to the United States at the end of the war. The population of San Francisco was over 800 thousand people in 2010

Old Tallinn

Old Tallinn Old Town, a medieval walled city filled with old buildings and fortifications. The sheltered bay and the easily defended Toompea Hill made it a natural place to settle. Sometime about 1050 A.D. a fortress was built atop the hill, the first of many. In 1219 the Danes showed up as part of the Northern Crusade to subjugate the Baltics and convert the local pagans to Christianity whether they wanted to or not. The Danes improved the fortifications and expanded the town, which became part of the Hanseatic League, a trading organization of a hundred northern cities. The Danes sold Tallinn to the Livonan Order, a branch of the Teutonic Knights, in 1346. The Swedes came next in 1561. Tallinn weathered plague and the Great Northern War and became part of Russia in 1710. In 1918, Estonia declared independence from Russia and fought a bitter war against Bolshevik Russia. Independence didn’t last long, however, and the fledgling nation fell first to the

Michelangelo's father managed to persuade Ghirlandaio to pay the young artist, which was unheard of at the time. In fact, most apprentices paid their masters for the education. From 1490 to 1492, Michelangelo attended Lorenzo's school and was influenced by many prominent people who modified and expanded his ideas on art. During his life, he made different sculptures and paintings. All of them are famous. This experience will expanded your horizons and make you more independent. Obviously there are both pros and cons to studying abroad, and here is what I think they might be. I believe that there are many advantages that the time abroad will provide you. For instance you will make a lot of friends from all over the world. It is always nice to have a place to stay when you accidentally end up in Japan or Australia for a few days. Being an exchange student is also a fabulous chance for travelling

Police warn of 'lethal' fake beauty products on sale

Police warn of 'lethal' fake beauty products on sale Police have warned that rats' droppings, human urine and arsenic have all been found in potentially lethal fake beauty products on sale to British consumers. Counterfeit make-up, perfume, hair straighteners and sun creams are all affected, warn the City of London Police. At least £90 million is spent every year on fake items as the rapid growth of online shopping has expanded the market. Counterfeit beauty products have become increasingly common and are readily available on auction sites, online forums and social media. Authenticating products has become more challenging as shoppers are unable to physically inspect items before committing to purchase them. Police warned that criminals are using generic stock images to deceive consumers into believing the items they are browsing are authentic.

The Role of the Hippie Movement in 21st Century Britain

Hippies were dissatisfied with what their parents had built for them. Hippies rejected middle class values, opposed nuclear weapons and the Vietnam War. They embraced aspects of eastern philosophy and desired to find new meaning in life. Hippies were often vegetarian and believed in eco friendly environmental practices. They championed free love and sexual liberation, particularly for women. They also promoted the use of psychedelic drugs which they believed expanded their consciousness. Hippies participated in alternative arts and street theater and listened to folk music and psychedelic rock as part of their anti-establishment lifestyle. Some hippies lived in communes or aggregated communities of other hippies. It kinda identifies with the famous “yolo” (You only live once) thinking. I’m not exactly sure if this can be put under the role of hippie movement in 21st century, but if I start to think about this, it is almost the same

Hadrian's Wall

order. However the construction of such an impressive wall was probably also a symbol of Roman power, both in occupied Britain and in Rome. Frontiers in the early empire were based more on natural features or fortified zones with a heavy military presence. Military roads or limes often marked the border, with forts and signal towers spread along them and it was not until the reign of Domitian that the first solid frontier was constructed, in Germania Superior, using a simple fence. Hadrian expanded on this idea, redesigning the German border by ordering a continuous timber palisade supported by forts behind it. Although such defences would not have held back any concerted invasion effort, they did physically mark the edge of Roman territory and went some way to providing a degree of control over who crossed the border and where. Hadrian reduced Roman military presence in the territory of the Brigantes and concentrated on building a more solid linear fortification to the north of them

kaob. 10 3. design or an original taste, using origin covertures from Ecuador, Togo or Sao Thomé. The assortment is completed by a wide variety of chocolate specialties such as mendicants, truffles, orangettes, cerisettes, chocolate bars, sugar free pralines, liquor pralines, easter eggs and figurines. Valentino has become one of Europe's leading manufacturers of luxury chocolates and has won many international awards. For the past ten years, Valentino has expanded rapidly and now has almost 300 employees, 75 company-owned shops and a turnover of £90 million. However, in the last two years, sales growth has slowed down and costs have risen because of price-cutting in the industry, production problems, a fall in demand and low staff morale. This has caused a fall in profits. So, the owners have set aside £1.5 million to solve this problem and enable Valentino to become a competitive international business. Objectives

London

I chose this topic because it is interesting to know about London.London is one of the impotrtant cities in Europe .I also think that everyone would like to travel in London. 3 London history During the 19th century, London was transformed into the world's largest city and capital of the British Empire. Its population expanded from 1 million in 1800 to 6.7 million a century later. During this period, London became a global political, financial, and trading capital. In this position, it was largely unrivaled until the latter part of the century, when Paris and New York began to threaten its dominance. The first railway to be built in London was a line from London Bridge to Greenwich, which opened in 1836. This was soon followed by the opening of great rail termini which linked London to every corner of Britain

associated with this movement include Donald Judd, John McLaughlin, Agnes Martin, Dan Flavin, Robert Morris, Anne Truitt, and Frank Stella. It is rooted in the reductive aspects of Modernism, and is often interpreted as a reaction against Abstract expressionism and a bridge to Postmodern art practices. The terms have expanded to encompass a movement in music which features repetition and iteration, as in the compositions of La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and John Adams. (See also Postminimalism). The term "minimalist" is often applied colloquially to designate anything which is spare or stripped to its essentials. It has also been used to describe the plays and novels of Samuel Beckett, the films of Robert Bresson, the stories of Raymond Carver, and even the automobile

The United States of America

Lawrence River, and with the Hudson River by a canal. In the west of the U.S.A. there is another big lake called the Great Salt Lake. Hawaii, a chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean, has a tropical climate. Alaska is separated from the continental US by Canada. The history of the USA began when England started creating colonies in the North America in the 1600s. The colonies became independent States and joined to form the "United States" in the 1700s. The USA expanded westward in the 1800s and reached the Pacific Ocean. As it grew, it became the greatest industrial power in the world. It wanted to stay out of European problems, but in the two World Wars, it decided that it could not afford to let Germany win. In the 1940s it became the leader of the West and organized an alliance of the democracies. Today it is the only superpower left in the world. Tensions between American colonials and the British during

Arvutiviirused

Viiruse tunneb ära ekraanile ilmuva fraasi "Your PC is Stoned" järgi; stoned tähendab argoos meelemõistuse kaotanult purjus või narkootikumiuimas olemist. Sellest ajast muutusid raaliviiruse nakkusjuhud üha sagedamateks. Tuli ette esimesi suurkahjustusi, kui viiruse ohvriks langes suur hulk arvuteid või siis suured terviksüsteemid. 1988.a. said lühikese aja jooksul nakkuse paljud Iisraeli arvutid Weitzmanni-nimelises Instituudis, Haridusministeeriumi teadus- ja pedagoogikakeskuses, ühes Tel-Avivi tarkvarafirmas ning Juu...

production, led black South Africans to rely more and more on comparatively expensive, industrially-processed foodstuffs like wheat flour, white rice, mealie (maize) meal and sugar. Often these foods were imported or processed by white wholesalers, mills and factories. The consequence was to drastically restrict the range of ingredients and cooking styles used by indigenous cooks. On the other hand, some imported food plants (maize, tomatoes) have expanded the dietary range of indigenous cooks. Of these maize is the most significant - it has been integrated to such an extent into the traditional diet that it is often assumed to be an indigenous plant. Popular foods in modern South Africa are chicken, limes, garlic, ginger, chili, tomatoes, onions and many spices. Settler cookery South Africa was settled from the seventeenth century by colonists from the Netherlands, Germany and France, and later by arrivals from the British Isles. These

the Equal Rights Party ticket without his knowledge. During the campaign, he neither campaigned for the ticket nor even acknowledged that he had been nominated. Douglass spoke about race at many schools around the country throughout the Reconstruction era, including Bates College in Lewiston, Maine in April of 1874.[1] Later life In 1877, Frederick Douglass purchased his final home in Washington D.C., on the banks of the Anacostia River. He named it Cedar Hill (also spelled CedarHill). He expanded the house from 14 to 21 rooms and included a china closet. One year later, Douglass expanded his property to 15 acres (61,000 m²), with the purchase of adjoining lots. The home is now the location of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. After the disappointments of Reconstruction, many African Americans called Exodusters moved to Kansas to form all-black towns. Douglass spoke out against the movement, urging blacks to stick it out. He was condemned and booed by black audiences.

why Westminster became the seat of government not the city of London itself. Edward the Confessor also built Westminster Abbey. He ruled until his death in 1065, after which King Harold was crowned. Norman period( Medieval London) 1066 In 1066 in the Battle of Hastings the Normans were victorious and William was crowned King. William granted the citizens of London special privileges, but he also built a castle in the southeast corner of the city to keep them under control. This castle was expanded by later kings until it became the complex we now call the Tower of London. The Tower acted as royal residence, and it was not until later that it became famous as a prison. In 1176 the first stone London Bridge was built. This bridge was to remain the only one in London until 1739. Because the passage across this one bridge was narrow and clogged with traffic, it was much quicker for travellers to hire boatmen to row them across the river, or transport them up or down river.
