ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.
During the war years, musical activities were limited, but concerts and recitals
were given quite regularly under the German occupation regime until March 1944,
when Tallinn and other bigger Estonian towns were bombed by the Soviet air forces

and a large part of the capital was destroyed. In the autumn of 1944 many Esotnian
musicians fled to the West, Olav Roots among them.
During the Soviet period a separate symphony orchestra was founded in 1942;
the conductors were Roman Matsov and Eugen Kapp. In 1946 the Estonian Radio
Symphony Orchestra consisted of nearly 90 instrumentalists, growing both in quality
and quantity. The great work of conductors Sergey Prokhorov and Paul Karp (the chief
conductor in the years 1944-1950) must be specially mentioned.
