advanced than previously thought, and that the seaways were very important to Scottish history. Because of the geographical orientation of Scotland and its strong reliance on trade routes by sea, the kingdom held close links in the south and east with the Baltic countries, and through Ireland with France and the continent of Europe. Following the Acts of Union which united Scotland with England into the Kingdom of Great Britain, and the subsequent Scottish Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution, Scotland became one of the commercial, intellectual and industrial powerhouses of Europe. Its industrial decline following the Second World War was particularly acute, but in recent decades the country has enjoyed something of a cultural and economic renaissance, fuelled in part by a resurgent financial services sector, the proceeds of North Sea oil and gas, and latterly a devolved parliament.

It is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwest. In addition to the mainland, Scotland consists of over 790 islands including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides. Edinburgh, the country's capital and second largest city, is one of Europe's largest financial centres. It was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which saw Scotland become one of the commercial, intellectual and industrial powerhouses of Europe. Scotland's largest city is Glasgow, which was once one of the world's leading industrial metropolises, and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation which dominates the Scottish Lowlands. Scottish waters consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union.

Linguistics lexicon handout

LEL 2E Notes on Vocabulary One of the key facts about the lexicon of any language is that it reflects in various ways the physical and cultural environment in which the language is spoken. A people unfamiliar with, say, horses is unlikely to have a word for `horse'; similarly with ploughs, printing presses, and internet porn sites. For the most part this is trivial it's hard to imagine how it could be otherwise, given the general nature of human language. People tend to make a great deal of the alleged fact (see Pullum 1989) that "the Eskimos have lots of words for snow", but it doesn't take much thought to realise that any language spoken in a given physical and cultural environment is likely to have efficient ways of referring to distinctions that are important in that environment. That doesn't mean that you can read very much into individual words and individual facts about the lexicon of a given language (this topic has already c...

Russian literature Russian literature refers to the literature of Russia and its émigrés and to the Russian-language literature of several independent nations once a part of what was historically Rus', the Russian Empire or the Soviet Union. The roots of Russian literature can be traced to the Middle Ages, when epics and chronicles in Old Russian were composed. By the Age of Enlightenment, literature had grown in importance, and from the early 1830s, Russian literature underwent an astounding golden age in poetry, prose and drama. Romanticism permitted a flowering of poetic talent: Vasily Zhukovsky and later his protégé Alexander Pushkin came to the fore. Prose was flourishing as well. The first great Russian novelist was Nikolai Gogol. Then came Ivan Turgenev, who mastered both short stories and novels. Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoyevsky soon became internationally renowned

Jacques Louis David ja Prantsuse Revolutsioon

With regard to the French artists in general, in the 18th century they were dependent on the Academy and therefore very restricted by formalities. King Louis XIV had forced painters to be extremely classical in their style and keep the paintings as clear and formal as possible. (Friedlaender, 1952, p.5) By the second half of the century political changes allowed art to be freer and therefore classicism started to bear a rather political note. Political art, various pamphlets, literature and the Enlightenment laid the foundations of the soon coming French Revolution. (Friedlander, 1952, p.7) Analysis To begin with, the 18th century was all about the rebirth of classicism and antiquity. Surprisingly, it was very hard for David to find examples from Antique, because they almost did not exist. Only some paintings that were meant for decor in Pompeii were preserved. That is why he went to Pompeii for an expedition, in order to best represent the classicism requirements

The threat of the Jacobite movement to the United Kingdom and its monarchs effectively ended at the Battle of Culloden, Great Britain's last pitched battle. This defeat paved the way for large-scale removals of the indigenous populations of the Highlands and Islands, known as the Highland Clearances. The Scottish Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution made Scotland into an intellectual, commercial and industrial powerhouse.[citation needed] After World War II, Scotland experienced an industrial decline which was particularly severe. Only in recent decades has the country enjoyed something of a cultural and economic renaissance. A second characteristic, beyond Roman law foundations, is the extended codification of the adopted Roman law, that is its inclusion into civil codes. The concept of codification was further developed during the 17th and 18th century, as an expression of both Natural Law and the ideas of the Enlightenment. This was a short overview of continental law, thank you for listening. meaning, an order and meaning that was not based on faith but on human Reason. With Newton, we find the important combination of two important concepts Nature and Reason. His scientific discoveries and his spirit (together with the ideas of Francis Bacon and John Locke) dominated the thought of the 18th century a century the thinkers of the period itself called the Age of Enlightenment. A New Earth

because you are always aware of something else. You are continuously distracted by form. Even when you seem to be aware of yourself, you have made yourself into an object, a thought form, and so what you are aware of is a thought, not yourself. When you hear of inner space, you may start seeking it, and because you are seeking it as if you were looking for an object or for an experience, you cannot find it. Bridges presentation

covered bridges survive in the USA, more than in any other country (Figure 6). Regardless of the capability of advanced societies like the Romans to build bridges in stone, the material for the ages, its cost always remained a problem. Wooden bridges were an economic alternative important to every civilization during all historic periods from prehistoric times to the first American settlement, from classical Rome to the European Enlightenment, including China, Japan, and south-east Asia. Wooden bridges have played a major role in the history of human development. The architectural varieties and structural types - girder, arch, suspension, truss, pontoon, and covered - were numerous. By virtue of the nature of their material, extant examples are scarce, as is the historic record. Nature, acts of God, war, and arson have decimated wooden bridges throughout time

VARAUUSAEG

VARAUUSAEG MATI LAUR 1. Viimastel aastakümnetel on saanud üldiseks tavaks ...

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

Liedertafel). Yet we have to appreciate the long historical connections with German culture; whether in music of different genre or in other fields. In the 19th century German cultural influences were the attainable means to gain an insight into advanced Western culture, as well as other world cultures. We may argue that the process of “national awakening” had a connection with the resurgence of the Baltic-German culture. The ideas of the German Enlightenment philosopher and critic Johann Gottfried von Herder (1744-1803), the theorist of Sturm und Drang, had exerted an influence on the emerging Estonian intelligentsia. In this respect, Tartu University, having international connections and developing an international reputation, had a remarkable effect on the cultural thought of the whole nation. The Russification policies of the late 19th century restrained the development of national cultural life
