Emily Dickinson

A door just opened Emily Dickinson A door just opened on a street-- I, lost, was passing by-- An instant's width of warmth disclosed And wealth, and company. The door as sudden shut, and I, I, lost, was passing by,-- Lost doubly, but by contrast most, Enlightening misery. Emily Dickinson Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (December 10, 1830 May 15, 1886) was an American poet. Born in Amherst, Massachusetts, to a successful family with strong community ties, she lived a mostly introverted and reclusive life. Emily Dickinson, regarded as one of America's greatest poets, is also well known for her unusual life of self imposed social seclusion. Living a life of simplicity and seclusion, she yet wrote poetry of great power; questioning the nature of immortality and death, with at times an almost mantric quality. Her different lifestyle created an aura; often romanticised, and frequently a source of interest and specula...

“The soul should always stand ajar, ready to welcome the ecstatic experience.”

ESSAY "The soul should always stand ajar, ready to welcome the ecstatic experience." -- Emily Dickinson I have chosen this quotation because I think it is more than true. I think that you should always give a chance to every offer you have given. At least you should make a try for it. We have given only one life to live, we should not waste it. First of all, I think that everything happens for a certain reason. And every bad thing that will come to your life will come also because of something. For instance you have done something bad and then it would be like some kind of punishment and also a good lesson. It will show you that what goes around, comes around. It is karma and I believe in karma. As mentioned earlier, you should always be opened for new experiences and opportunities. That is so because they are meant to be come for a better life. But everything begin...

Fame is a Fickle Food

"Fame is a Fickle Food" by Emily Dickinson Analysis Liisi Pajula In her poem "Fame is a Fickle Food", Emily Dickinson quite clearly compares fame to something very changing and uncertain. She compares it to food, which at first seems tempting, but is actually venomous and deadly. From the very beginning of the poem, we get the idea that Dickinson has her mind set against fame and those, who run after it. With using words such as 'fickle' and 'shifting' she very successfully demonstrates that fame is not permanent and should thus be handled with care. Dickinson also says that true fame is something one can achieve only once ("Whose table once a Guest, but not / The second time is set"). She goes on to explain that after fame has faded, its not too pleasant insides become visib...

The Origins of American Literature

The origins of American literature The first Americans were explorers and settlers, adventurers and idealists who crossed the ocean in search of new opportunities or to escape the poverty and intolerance. Their writings were matter-of-fact accounts of life in America, which explained colonisation to Englishmen back in the homeland. An example of this form of writing is John Smith's A True Relation of Virginia, which is widely recognized to be the first example of Am lit. The early years of colonisation produced a mass of utilitarian writings including biographies, accounts of voyages, diaries, sermons, pamphlets. Much of the material addressed the problems of Church and State. There were few examples of fiction, poetry or drama. Anne Bradstreet of Massachusetts published some lyrical poems of high literary quality (1650) and Edward Taylor, who was born in England but lived in Boston, wrote some poetry in the style of John ...

American Literature

The making of a new nation. The Enlightenment in America. The emergence of the notion of the American Dream. The great Enlighteners: Crèvecoeur, Jefferson, Paine, Franklin. The American Enlightenment is the intellectual thriving period in the United States in the midtolate 18th century (17151789), especially as it relates to American Revolution on the one hand and the European Enlightenment on the other. Influenced by the scientific revolution of the 17th century and the humanist period during the Renaissance, the Enlightenment took scientific reasoning and applied it to human nature, society, and religion. American Enlightenment a gradual but powerful awakening that established the ideals of democracy, liberty, and religious tolerance in the people of America. If there were just one development that directly caused the American Revolution and uplifted the intellectual culture of the continent while it was only a British colony,...

EESTI KIRJANDUSE AJALUGU II

FLKU.05.091 EESTI KIRJANDUSE AJALUGU II Kevadsemester 2018: kordamisküsimused eksamiks 1. Eesti proosa ja draama põhisuundumusi ja autoreid aastatel 195665. Tugev tsensuur. Eestis on Nõukogude võim, suured repressioonid, esteetiline kaanon, eeltsensuur toimib endiselt, kuid leeveneb. Mängitakse peitust, nagu oleks kõik endine, kuid päris endine enam olla ei saa. Sulaaja proosa: ühiskondlik rõhuasetus (1950ndate alguses sotsialistlik realism, võlts optimism. Sotsialistlik realism hakkab tagasi muutuma realismiks. Psühholoogilised armastuslood ei tõuse esile, vaid ühiskondlikud panoraamid ja sotsiaalse väljakäiguga realism), dokumentaalsuse taotlusi (võlts dokumentaalsus muutub päris dokumentaalkirjanduseks, nt Smuuli ,,Jäine raamat"), romantilisi jooni (pärisrealistlikud taotlused põimuvad romantilise esteetikaga), noorsookirjanduse iseseisvumine (see tõotab proosakirjandu...
