The State Hermitage (Russian: ) is a museum of art and culture situated in Saint Petersburg, Russia. One of the largest and oldest museums of the world, it was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and open to the public since 1852. Its collections, of which only a small part is on permanent display, comprise nearly 3 million items, including the largest collection of paintings in the world. The collections occupy a large complex of six historic buildings along Palace Embankment, including the Winter Palace, a former residence of Russian emperors. Apart from them, the Menshikov. Museum of Porcelain, Storage Facility at Staraya Derevnya and the eastern wing of the Generel Staff Building also make part of the museum. The museum has several exhibition centers abroad. It is known as Cleopatra's Needle as it was brought to London from Alexandria, the royal city of Cleopatra. The London needle is in the City of Westminister, on the Victoria Embanknet near the Golden Jubilee Bridges. It is close to the Embankment underground station. It is also called the obelisk. Originally built as a pair for the Temple of the Sun at Heliopolis It was dug out of the sand in which it had been buried for nearly 2,000 years and was encased in a great iron cylinder, 92 feet (28 m) long and 16 feet (4.9 m) in diameter, designed by the engineer John Dixon.
