EARTHQUAKES

EARTHQUAKES What is earthquake? • the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. • the earthquakes are measured by magnitudes • caused mostly by rupture of geological faults, but also by other events • such as volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear tests • earthquakes manifest themselves by shaking and sometimes displacement of the ground Japan earthquake 2011 • 9.03 magnitude undersea megathrust earthquake  • Triggered powerful tsunami waves • After the World War ll the most difficult crisis for Japan Luzon earthquake 1990 • 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Philippines How to be Prepared • Electricity, water, gas and telephones may not be working • You'll need food and water During an earthquake • If you’re indoors, stay there • If you're outside, get into the open • avoid panicking After an Earthquake • Use your phone only for emergency

Maavärinate esinemispiirkonnad 1954. aastal avaldas prantsuse seismoloog J.P. Rothé sellise kaardi, kus on näidatud maavärinate peamised esinemisalad. Maavärinate registreerimine • http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/index.php Maavärinate esinemispiirkonnad Punasega on tähistatud vulkaanide levikualad, kollasega maavärinate piirkonnad, sinisega laamade piirid. Mis on maavärin? • Maavärin on maapinna lühiajaline ja äkiline liikumine (vappumine), mis on põhjustatud kivimitesse kogunenud pingete vabanemisest. • Pinged kogunevad kivimitesse (litosfääri) eelkõige laamade liikumise tõttu, s.o. maasisese ainese ümberpaiknemisel

before it begins to get to higher ground. Flooding is extremely dangerous and has the potential to wipe away an entire city, coastline or area, and cause extensive damage to life and property. It also has great erosive power and can be extremely destructive, even if it is a foot high. A tsunami (pronounced sue-nahm-ee) is a series of huge waves that can cause great devastation and loss of life when they strike a coast. Tsunamis are caused by an underwater earthquake, a volcanic eruption, an sub-marine rockslide, or, more rarely, by an asteroid or meteoroid crashing into in the water from space. Most tsunamis are caused by underwater earthquakes, but not all underwater earthquakes cause tsunamis - an earthquake has to be over about magnitude 6.75 on the Richter scale for it to cause a tsunami. About 90 percent of all tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean. Many tsunamis could be detected before they hit land, and the loss of

The Greenhouse Effects

When scientists talk about the issue of climate change, their concern is about global warming caused by human activities. The increasing infrastructure instability is an important issue in relation to the influences of global climate change in urban areas. A serious issue pertaining to this is the dual nature of damage triggered by events combined with climate change and natural hazards. For example, catastrophic damage could result from the combination of global warming with a great earthquake, which is a worst-case scenario. Although this worst-case scenario has rarely occurred and presents a low probability of occurrence, countermeasures must be prepared in advance based on an appropriate response and adaptation strategies. After an overview of possible infrastructural instabilities caused by global warming, methodologies are proposed placing emphasis on the increasing probability of infrastructural instability triggered by natural hazards

They were centered near the Imperial Valley, or Mexico, back in the 1800s. In 1887, Douglas felt the shock of a magnitude 7.2 earthquake with an epicenter 40 miles to the south in the Mexican state of Sonora. The first damaging earthquake known to be centered within Arizona's borders occurred on January 25, 1906, also including a series of other earthquakes centered near Socorro, New Mexico. Chinatown San Francisco's Chinatown is the oldest Chinatown in North America and one of the largest Chinese communities outside Asia. In addition to it being a starting point and home for thousands of Chinese immigrants, it is also a major tourist attraction. Geography San Francisco is famous for its hills. There are over 50 hills within city limits. The tallest hill is Mount Davidson. It's 925 feet (282 m) high. The nearby San Andreas and Hayward Faults are responsible for much earthquake activity. The San Andreas Fault caused the earthquakes in 1906 and 1989. Minor earthquakes occur on a regular basis. Climate San Francisco has cool and dry summers, wet and mild winters. San Francisco's weather is strongly influenced by the cool currents of the Pacific Ocean. The high hills in the geographic center of the city are responsible for a 20% variance in annual rainfall between different parts of the city. The Colossus of Rhodes

The Colossus of Rhodes

To build the statue, the workers cast the outer bronze skin parts. The base was made of white marble, and the feet and ankle of the statue were first fixed. The structure was gradually erected as the bronze form was fortified with an iron and stone framework. To reach the higher parts, an earth ramp was built around the statue and was later removed. When the Colossus was finished, it stood about 33 metres (110 ft) high. A strong earthquake hit Rhodes at around 226 BC. The city was badly damaged, and the Colossus was broken at its weakest point - the knee. For almost a millennium, the statue lay broken in ruins. In AD 654, the Arabs invaded Rhodes. They disassembled the remains of the broken Colossus and sold them to a Jew from Syria. It is said that the fragments had to be transported to Syria on the backs of 900 camels.

era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine. It has been estimated that about 500,000 people and over a million wild animals died in the Colosseum games.Although in the 21st century it stays partially ruined due to damage caused by devastating earthquakes and stone- robbers, the Colosseum is an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome and its breakthrough achievements in earthquake engineering. It is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions and still has close connections with the Roman Catholic Church, as each Good Friday the Pope leads a torchlit "Way of the Cross" procession to the amphitheatre.[5]The Colosseum is also depicted on the Italian version of the five-cent euro coin. happened throughout the years. In Ukraine some kids are still born with three legs and many people have cancer. Although it is not hundred percent proven that the cause of these conditions is the radiation from Chernobyl I still believe it cannot be a coincidence. NUCLEAR ENERGY Fukushima power plant has also caused a lot of trouble in Japan. As we saw nuclear power plants are not powerful enough to survive an earthquake. It might be good that nuclear power does not contaminate the atmosphere as much, but I don't think it overweighs all the sick and dead people when an accident happens. Nuclear wastes last forever and the radiation is bad for us. The amount of radiation balances out the smaller amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. I also feel that it might cause a lot of trouble between countries and their need for power in the future

These reforms gained him enemies in the upper classes, especially among the high nobility, who despised him as a social upstart. Disaster fell upon Portugal in the morning of 1 November 1755, when Lisbon was struck by a violent earthquake with an estimated Richter scale magnitude of 9. The city was razed to the ground by the earthquake and the subsequent tsunami and ensuing fires. The island remained Spanish until 1655, when Admiral William Penn and Robert Venables captured it; it was formally ceded to England in 1670, but the local European population obtained a degree of autonomy. Jamaica prospered from the wealth brought by buccaneers, notably Sir Henry Morgan, to Port Royal, the capital; in 1692, however, much of the city sank into the sea during an earthquake, and Spanish Town became the new capital. A huge, mostly African, slave population grew up around the sugarcane plantations in the 18th cent., when Jamaica was a leading world sugar producer. Freed and escaped slaves, sometimes aided by the maroons (slaves who had escaped to remote areas after Spain lost 3 control of Jamaica), succeeded in organizing frequent uprisings against the European landowners

As of 2007, the IAEA reported there are 439 nuclear power reactors in operation in the world, operating in 31 countries. In 2007, nuclear power´s share of global electricity generation dropped to 14%. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the main reason for this was an earthquake in western Japan on 16 July 2007, which shut down all seven reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant. There were also several other reductions and "unusual outages" experienced in Korea and Germany. Also, increases in the load factor for the current fleet of reactors appear to have plateaued. Architects and engineers have embraced steel as their material of choice for building complex structures like the Guggenheim Museum, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Experience Music Project, Seattle Central Library, Denver Art Museum, Royal Ontario Museum, etc. The unconventional geometric forms of these buildings, coupled with stringent earthquake regulations meant that a fundamentally different approach was needed to mitigate risks, improve coordination, meet the project deadline and stay within the budget. This thesis attempts to study the effects that three-dimensional software tools and Building Information Modeling (BIM) are having on the design, fabrication and construction of complex steel structures. The research is based on qualitative case study methodology, focusing on the Seattle Central Library and the Denver Art Museum
