What is a thunderstorm?

A storm with thunder and
lightning and typically
heavy rain or hail.
Different types of thunderstorms
Single-cell
· Typically less than a couple of miles across
· Short lasting
Multi-cell clusters
· May last for several hours and move hundreds of miles
Supercells
· Single, large storm 20-40 km across
· Last for hours

What causes thunder?
· Thunder is caused by lightning. When a lightning
bold travels from the cloud to the ground it
actually opens up a little hole in the air.
When the light is gone the air collapses back
and creates a sound wave that we hear as
thunder
What to do during a thunderstorm?
· In a forest: seek shelter in a low area under thick
growth of trees.
· Avoid using electrical appliances, unplug them.
· Do not thake baths or showers during storms
