Democracy in the US

In 1772, fighting broke out between New England militia and British soldiers. On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress issued a Declaration of Independence, primarily written by Thomas Jefferson, a farmer and lawyer from Virginia. This document declared that from that time the United Colonies were no longer colonies of England, but free and independent states named the United States of America. Moreover, the Declaration of Independence set forth some of the principled of American democracy. With help from France, the American armies, led by George Washington, a gentleman farmer from Virginia, won the War of Independence . The peace treaty was signed in 1783. During the war, the states had agreed to work together by sending representatives to a national congress. The agreement that set up this plan of cooperation was called the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation failed because the states did not cooperate with the Congress or with each other

Van Schendelen, lobitöö ja euroopa liidu demokraatia

Van Schendelen, Rinus. Ch 8 'Lobbying and EU democracy', Machiavelli in Brussels (Amsterdam, 2005) pp. 311-350.

An analysis of the problem of Political Power - essee

(McLaughlin, 2010) Thirdly, theological. It means that person will get divine right to rule. This system can work mostly in the states, where people are seriously and deeply religious, because theological power means that it is God's will and God has chosen the ruler. (McLaughlin, 2010) Fourthly, voluntaristic. It means that person will get the right to rule voluntarily. It contains duty of gratitude (benefits I did not ask). (McLaughlin, 2010) Mostly we think that only democracy can be totally acceptable. But what is democracy? Is it really so drawing power? (Wolff, 1996) Some say that democracy is the rule of the people, by the people, for the people. But does democracy really deserve the reputation that it has? (Wolff, 1996) The word of (citicens) means that democracy is internal. The word by means that in is collective (selfgovernment). The word for means that there should be public interest about political power. Three theories

USA ajaloo konspekt (algus-Mayflower Compact)

Mayflower. The two principles later became the bases of the Constitution of the United States. 1) The people would vote about the government and laws, 2) the people would accept whatever the majority chose. 12. What important principle regarding religion was established in Rhode Island and some of the other colonies? Separation of church and state. 13. Name examples of democratic institutions in the colonies. House of Burgesses vs. House of Representatives 14. What is representative democracy? Give an example. The people don’t vote directly on the laws, but elect representatives who meet and vote for them. E.g. current USA, where people elect a president and members of the congress. 15. What is direct democracy? Give an example. All the people of a town/area meet frequently to vote on the laws; only possible in small towns etc. E.g. town meetings in smaller NE towns, referendums. 16. The European Union Law , The EU institutions

Tallinn, 2014 The institutions of the European Union form a complex and unique polity and, in determining whether or not this structure and the law making powers granted to each respective institution are inherently undemocratic, it is vital to define what is meant by the term ‘democratic’. In his Gettysburg address Abraham Lincoln referred to a government which was ‘of the people, by the people, for the people’and it is by this criterion that democracy is often judged. These principles are reflected in having equal access to power and in being equal before the law. It must be considered not only whether law making powers are granted to elected persons, but also whether the balance of power between institutions within the European Union promotes the ideals of democracy. Firstly, the democratic nature of the European Union must be measured by the extent to which

It is a constitutional republic and representative democracy. The government is regulated by a system of checks and balances defined by the U.S. Constitution, which serves as the country's supreme legal document. In the American federalist system, citizens are usually subject to three levels of government, federal, state, and local; thelocal government's duties are commonly split between county and municipal governments. In almost all cases, executive and legislative officials are elected by a plurality vote of citizens by district.

Hariduse areng kaasaegses Eestis (J.Dewey)

1 Dewey, J. (1922). Democracy and education : an introduction to the philosophy of education. NY: Macmillan, pt 1 Juba 1916.a. väitis Dewey, et kuna elamine tähendab kasvamist, tähendab haridus tingimuste loomist edasisteks õpinguteks. Haridus ei tohiks lõppeda kooli lõpetamisega. Kooli ülesanne on kindlustada hariduse jätkamine läbi inimpotentsiaali avamise kasvuks. Kooli edukaim väljund on luua tingimused, et inimesed oskaksid ja sooviksid õppida elust enesest.
