Essay on water pollution, global warming, acid rain, deforestation, intensive farming

Water pollution Attention for water pollution exploded in the 1980s. The oil spill of the Exxon Valdez showed many around the world just how horrible the effects of water pollution could be. However, even the Exxon Valdez spill barely touched the surface of the problem of water pollution. The ship spilt only 5% of the oil spilt that year, and oil is just one of many pollutants that people dump into the water every year. Every year, 14 billions pounds of sewage, sludge, and garbage are dumped into the world's oceans. 19 trillion gallons of waste also enter the water annually. The problem of ocean pollution affects every nation around the world. This is especially true because water is able to transport pollution from one location to another. For many years, chemicals were dumped into bodies of water without concern. While many countries have now banned such behavior, it continues to go on today. As the world has industrialized and i...

grown on the African oil palm tree. Oil palms are originally from Western Africa, but can flourish wherever heat and rainfall are abundant. Today, palm oil is grown throughout Africa, Asia, North America, and South America, with 85% of all palm oil globally produced and exported from Indonesia and Malaysia; but most of the time not using sustainable measures. The industry is linked to major issues such as deforestation, habitat degradation, climate change, animal cruelty and indigenous rights abuses in the countries where it is produced, as the land and forests must be cleared for the development of the oil palm plantations. According to the World Wildlife Fund, an area the equivalent size of 300 football fields of rainforest is cleared each hour to make way for palm oil production. This large-scale deforestation is pushing many

Environmental problems

It is the little things, like switching off fans and lights when you are not at home. Electricity causes the burning of large amounts of fossil fuels, which in turn pollute the air. Solar power is a fantastic solution. Now that solar radiation is at a climactic peak, we can reap power from the sun using solar panel systems. These range from home systems to larger scale systems powering entire communities and cities. 2. Deforestation. While individuals can rarely have a personal impact on the deforestation rate, there are other things you can do. Discourage deforestation and thus environmental degradation by reusing plastic and paper bags and packaging. Support eco-friendly businesses and buy products that are either recyclable or have a longer durability. 3. Ozone layer depletion As with potable water depletion, the responsibility for stopping

I'd like to present the main issues of our planet and today i'll name 5 of them. These are air pollution, water pollution, endangered animals, deforestation and rubbish. Air pollution Firstly, lets talk about air pollution, which endangeres our life in cities and also the forests near by. Cars and factories blow poisoned gas in the air and it mixes with the oxygen, so the air that we breathe, becomes dangerous to our health. The ozone layer around the Earth, there is a special type of oxygen called ,,ozone"

Ancient yews Yews are slow-growing and long-lived, and are often associated with cemeteries where the trees grow undisturbed. There are many European yews whose age has been analyzed to be many hundreds of years old. The oldest yew on record is the Fortingall Yew in Perthshire, Scotland, which is estimated to be around 5,000 years old Under threat European Yews are a threatened species because they never fully succeeded in regenerating after deforestation, and due to the modern day over-harvesting for Taxol. They have always been considered a trash tree and are thus threatened by deforestation.

The importance of the rainforest

The importance of the rainforest

Unbelievably, more than 200,000 acres of rainforest are burned every day. That is more than 150 acres lost every minute of every day, and 78 million acres lost every year! More than 20 percent of the Amazon rainforest is already gone, and much more is severely threatened as the destruction continues. It is estimated that the Amazon alone is vanishing at a rate of 20,000 square miles a year. If nothing is done to curb this trend, the entire Amazon could well be gone within fifty years. Massive deforestation brings with it many ugly consequences-air and water pollution, soil erosion, malaria epidemics, the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the eviction and decimation of indigenous Indian tribes, and the loss of biodiversity through extinction of plants and animals. Fewer rainforests mean less rain, less oxygen for us to breathe, and an increased threat from global warming. But who is really to blame? Consider what we industrialized Americans have done to our own homeland

Sugarcane cultivation takes up only 2.5% of the total agricultural land available and it has been predicted that there is plenty of potential for agricultural expansion (Padula et al, 2007). It is well accepted that, in Brazil, the current large-scale sugarcane production does not compromise food production, and even an expansion would be possible without constraints. Sugarcane is mostly cultivated in the southeast region of Brazil and sugarcane production has limited impact on deforestation, because the soil and weather conditions in the Amazon are not suitable for sugarcane. Nevertheless, large areas dedicated for sugarcane production limit the land availability that can be used for other crops. In areas, where sugarcane is primarily produced, the production of oranges, cattle and other crops have lost space to sugarcane (Padula et al. 2007; Bowen, 2010). 3.4. Soybean and rapeseed oil

world? Air pollution is the addition of any harmful substances to the atmosphere, which causes the damaging of the environment, human health and the quality of life. Firstly, we should use green methods of powering like wind energy and landfill gas energy. This would reduce the amount of harmful gases. Another useful suggestion would be to plant trees. In this way we can increase the source of breathable oxygen. Unfortunately, many companies are contributing to deforestation. Finally, it would help if we put taxes on carbon emissions or higher taxes on gasoline. In this way people and companies will have greater incentives to conserve energy and pollute less. In conclusion, there are many ways to pollute the air less. We all have to do whatever we can to solve this major problem. As Shimon Peres said “If a problem has no solution, it may not be a problem.”

Environmental problems today

Environmental problems today Nowadays we need to stand face to face against the environmental problems in spite of our everyday routine, that may affect the nature. Which are the most problematic environmental problems and how can we avoid them ? To start with, the biggest problem is global warming. The temperature is rising due to air pollution, which is caused by smoke from factories and of rising levels of CO2 . As a result, smog and soot causes health problems. Also, a big problem is deforestation. Due to the fact that it is causing destruction of the rainforest, it contaminates the water. To solve these problems, we certainly should use renewable sources of energy and we need to avoid dangerous gases. For example, we should switch off lights every time when we leave a room. Moreover, we should take public transport more often and stop using CFC's. We can solve environmental problems only if we follow certain rules.

The most pressing environmental issues in Estonia

The most pressing environmental issues in Estonia The earth is considered as one of the most beautiful planets in the Universe. Unfortunately, our planet is suffering due to many problems which should be solved before it is too late. Of course our country is not an exception. The major problems that are facing our country today are air and water pollution and recycle problem. Also we have, for example, deforestation problem and traffic jams, for instance, in Tallinn in rush-hour. Nevertheless, those problems are not so significant than previous. One of the biggest problems in Estonia is air and water pollution. One example of air pollution is exhaust fumes. Today we have a lot of transport: cars and buses, in the main in our capital. Gases which are produced by cars contain carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide in the air causes global warming, which is the result of the green house effect

Until recently, concern about the environment revolved almost exclusively around local and national problems. Over the past two decades, however, scientists have increasingly focused attention on more far-reaching environmental threats, such as global warming, ozone depletion, and deforestation that transcend national boundaries. A new concept global environmental problems has entered the public arena, especially in the area of foreign policy and economic matters. Computers will be able to perform more time-saving functions, transport will be faster and more efficient and new inventions will continue to help us carry out daily tasks with ease and comfort. On the other hand, there are those who believe that life in the future will not be so trouble-free. We will have used up the world's natural resources, therefore our planet will be on the verge of destruction. What is more, some fear that pollution will have increased due to problems such as deforestation and that acid rain will only have been made worse. They do not consider, however, that modern technology can solve environmental problems as well as less pressing ones. All in all, I feel that life in the future will definitely be better. We are all searching for ways to improve our lives and we can only look ahead in order to do this. (V. Evans Successful Writing)

More than 90% certain that most of global warming was being caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities. In 2010 that finding was recognized by the national science academies of all major industrialized nations. Affirming these findings in 2013, the IPCC stated that the largest driver of global warming is carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuel combustion, cement production, and land use changes such as deforestation. Its 2013 report states:Human influence has been detected in warming of the atmosphere and the ocean, in changes in the global water cycle, in reductions in snow and ice, in global mean sea level rise, and in changes in some climate extremes. Previous findings have suggested that the serious decline in giant panda numbers in modern times is related to its unusual dietary requirements the species exists almost entirely on bamboo habitat isolation and relatively slow reproductive rate. But this new study, published in Molecular Biology and Evolution, has uncovered an important relationship between the species' decline and human activities. "It is clear that the species has suffered at the hands of human activities such as deforestation and poaching," said Professor Michael Bruford. The research also shows that where habit conservation projects have been properly implemented, the giant panda is flourishing and its numbers are increasing. "Our research suggests we have to revise our thinking about the evolutionary prospects for the giant panda and that the species has a viable future and possesses the genetic capacity to adapt to new circumstances," said Professor Bruford. We use the wood of these trees for construction, firewood and art. They have been cleared for farming and to build communities. These human activities have led to the decline and loss of these forests in many parts of the world. Temperate rainforest: Farming, mining, hunting, logging and urbanization are some of the human activities that have affected negatively this biome, resulting in biodiversity loss, pollution, deforestation and habitat loss and fragmentation. Temperate grassland: Grasslands in temperate latitudes have been modified by human activity to such a degree that little remains today in a natural state - and substantially less in some form of long-term protection. Only 5.5% of the world's temperate grasslands are currently protected within the global system of protected areas. Taiga: Removing most of the trees in a

Several diverse extreme weather events, such as droughts, floods, and hurricanes, are occurring concurrently around the world, giving rise to an unprecedented loss of human life and property. Increases in the frequency and intensity of heat waves and precipitation have also been observed. Consequently, a growing number of exotic animals are now on the verge of extinction. More disappointingly, the above- mentioned climatic changes, combined with heedless deforestation and noxious industrial emissions will not only affect animal life by changing important habitats but will also contribute to soil erosion and leaching. Thus, crop yields are expected to continue to drop in coming decades, resulting in widespread famine. Moreover, many regions will face dwindling water supplies as the result of shrinking glaciers and snowpack, evaporation, and the infiltration of salt water. Acute food and water shortages will presumably bring about manifold health problems
