The Picture of Dorian Gray

order and Dorian dead and really ugly.(book: servants hear a cry and break into the room) That night, Dorian goes to the locked room to look at his portrait. He hopes his decision to amend his life will have changed the painting, and he considers that perhaps his decision not to ruin the innkeeper's daughter's reputation will be reflected in the painted face. But when Dorian looks at his portrait, he sees there is no change--except that "in the eyes there was a look of cunning, and in the mouth the curved wrinkle of the hypocrite." In the movie he sees a change in the eyes and thinks he stil has a chance. He decides to destroy the painting and grow old as everyone else does. (book: he destroys it with anger). Too gross picture.

And they tell me you are crooked and I answer: Yes, it is true I have seen the gunman kill and go free to kill again. And they tell me you are brutal and my reply is: On the faces of women and children I have seen the marks of wanton hunger. And having answered so I turn once more to those who sneer at this my city, and I give them back the sneer and say to them: Come and show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning. Flinging magnetic curses amid the toil of piling job on job, here is a tall bold slugger set vivid against the little soft cities; Fierce as a dog with tongue lapping for action, cunning as a savage pitted against the wilderness, Bareheaded, Shoveling, Wrecking, Planning, Building, breaking, rebuilding, Under the smoke, dust all over his mouth, laughing with white teeth, Under the terrible burden of destiny laughing as a young man laughs,

Psychology – Gleitman

In some societies including our own, dreams are generally dismissed as nonsensical fancies, irrelevant to real life. Dreams and internal conflict- according to Freud, dreams are product of an elaborate clash between two contending forces-unconscious primitive urges of our biological heritage and the civilizing constaints imposed by society. The disguise explains why dreams are so often odd and senseless. Senselessness is only on the surface, a cunning mask that lets us indulge in the unacceptable wish without realizing that iti is unacceptable. ' some distortions involve various transformations of the unacceptable themes, one is symbolism'. ( riding a horse and walking up a staircase refer to intercourse and passion ). Dreams and Human Development: How children learn there is a difference between two realms of phenomena, those which we call subjective and those we call objective. ( How we attain our adult

Australia

first fleet of 11 ships with 1500 aboard, half of them convicts, arrived at Botany Bay in January 1788. Sydney grew from that first British penal settlement. Transportation of convicts to New South Wales ceased in 1840, but continued to Western Australia in 1868. About 160 000 convicts arrived in over 80 years. The convicts were mostly poor townspeople. Only few of them were from wealthier classes. The building of a new society based on these people was an outrageous challenge. The most cunning and skilful of the convicts became later the founders of prominent colonial families. Until 1830s the convicts were harshly punished for almost no reason, flogging being the most common penalty. During the 1850s, the settlement was boosted by gold rushes. Gold was first found at Bayhurst in 1851. Scarcity of labour (tööjõupuudus), the vastness of the bush, and new wealth based on farming, mining and trade all contributed to the

Othello opens in the stately city of Venice

Lodovico enters with Desdemona with a letter recalling Othello back to Venice. The two discuss Cassio, upsetting Othello even further and when Desdemona expresses happiness at being recalled, Othello strikes here. Lodovico is surprised by the violence and the loss of control by Othello. Scene 2 Othello questions Emilia about Desdemona’s infidelities, to which Emilie denies the accusations. However, Othello only takes this as meaning his wife is more cunning than he thought. He then takes to calling Desdemona a “whore” and a “strumpet”, railing against her. Desdemona is distraught by her husband’s treatment of her, sure that she is being punished for some unknown crime. Emilia once again shows foresight by saying it is as though someone has turned Othello against her. However, when his opinion is asked, Iago only states that it is politics that have Othello so worked up.

The Witch Trials in Salem

The long-term result of amalgamation of distinct types of magic-worker into one is the considerable present-day confusion as to what witches actually did, whether they harmed or healed, what role they had in the community, whether they can be identified with the "witches" of other cultures and even whether they existed as anything other than a projection. Present-day beliefs about the witches of history attribute to them elements of the folklore witch, the charmer, the cunning man or wise woman, the diviner and the astrologer. Powers typically attributed to European witches include turning food poisonous or inedible, flying on broomsticks or pitchforks, casting spells, cursing people, making livestock ill and crops fail, and creating fear and local chaos. E.M.Remarque "Läänerindel Muutuseta"

They are from the same class in school, and each enlisted in the army voluntarily. Tjaden, a locksmith, is a voracious eater but remains thin as a rail, making Paul wonder where all the food goes to on his skinny frame. Haie Westhus, also nineteen, is a peat-digger with a body as large and powerful as Tjaden's is thin. Detering is a peasant with a wife at home. Katczinsky, the unofficial leader of Paul's small group of comrades, is a cunning older man of about forty years. After a sound night's sleep, the men line up for breakfast. The cook has unwittingly made enough food for 150 men. The men are anxious to eat the rations designated for their fallen comrades, but the cook insists that he is only allowed to distribute single rations and that the dead soldiers' rations will simply have to go to waste. After a heated argument, however, he agrees to distribute all of the food.

William Shakespeare - Hamlet

of your quality; come, a passionate speech. First Player What speech, my lord? HAMLET I heard thee speak me a speech once, but it was never acted; or, if it was, not above once; for the play, I remember, pleased not the million; 'twas caviare to the general: but it was—as I received it, and others, whose judgments in such matters cried in the top of mine—an excellent play, well digested in the scenes, set down with as much modesty as cunning. I remember, one said there were no sallets in the lines to make the matter 76 savoury, nor no matter in the phrase that might indict the author of affectation; but called it an honest method, as wholesome as sweet, and by very much more handsome than fine. One speech in it I chiefly loved: 'twas Aeneas' tale to Dido; and thereabout of it especially, where he speaks of Priam's slaughter: if it live in your memory, begin

But let us remember that we must have regard for justice even towards the humblest. Now the humblest station and the poorest fortune are those of slaves; and they give us no bad rule who bid us treat our slaves as we should our employees: they must be required to work; they must be given their dues. While wrong may be done, then, in either of two ways, that is, by force or by fraud, both are bestial: fraud seems to belong to the cunning fox, force to the lion; both are wholly unworthy of man, but fraud is the more contemptible. But of all forms of injustice, none is more flagrant than that of the hypocrite who, at the very moment when he is most false, makes it his business to appear virtuous. This must conclude our discussion of justice. Tsitaadid: "Sõda tuleb alustada nõnda, et ainsat eesmärki nähtaks rahu saavutamises", "jälgida tuleb sedagi, et karistus

reality – the pain-body. They were not yet conscious enough to recognize it directly within themselves, but it was the beginning of their becoming aware of it. Christ can be seen as the archetypal human, embodying both the pain and the possibility of transcendence. HOW THE PAIN-BODY RENEWS ITSELF The pain-body is a semi-autonomous energy form that lives within most human beings, an entity made up of emotion. It has its own primitive intelligence, not unlike a cunning animal, and its intelligence is directed primarily at survival. Like all life-forms, it periodically needs to feed – to take in new energy – and the food it requires to replenish itself consists of energy that is compatible with its own, which is to say, energy that vibrates at a similar frequency. Any emotionally painful experience can be used as food by the pain-body. That's why it thrives on negative thinking as well as drama in relationships. The pain-body is an addiction to unhappiness

Jane Austen

"Elizabeth Bennet," said Miss Bingley, when the door was closed on her, "is one of those young ladies who seek to recommend themselves to the other sex by undervaluing their own; and with many men, I dare say, it succeeds. But, in my opinion, it is a paltry device, a very mean art." "Undoubtedly," replied Darcy, to whom this remark was chiefly addressed, "there is a meanness in all the arts which ladies sometimes condescend to employ for captivation. Whatever bears affinity to cunning is despicable." Miss Bingley was not so entirely satisfied with this reply as to continue the subject. Elizabeth joined them again only to say that her sister was worse, and that she could not leave her. Bingley urged Mr. Jones being sent for immediately; while his sisters, convinced that no country advice could be of any service, recommended an express to town for one of the most eminent physicians. This she would not hear of; but she was not so unwilling to
