Tolerance and diversity

First of all I had to pose myself a question what does tolerance mean to me? I came to the conclusion that for me it means accepting people the way they are- not caring about their appearance, orign, religion, attitude or skin coulor, even if their beliefs and thoughts are not just the same as mine. I think that every one of us should pay respect to other people. I find it interesting to learn about other cultures and how they live. Estonia is a culturally diverse society. It is home to approximately 1,4 million people and not all of them are Estonians. Beside us consider Estonia as their home: Russians, Ukranians, Belorussian, Jews, Tatars, Germans and Poles - among of many others. They all have chosen to live here and they want to be taken as a part of our nationality. They want to be accepted and esposed. I can't understand people who can't be tolerate. I think it would be absolutely dreadful if all the people were just the same

For instance, studies have shown that dams along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts on North America have reduced salmon populations, even thou most dams have fish ladders installed. *Another disadvantage of hydroelectric dams is the need to relocate the people living where the reservoirs are planned. Additionally, historically and culturally importants sites can be flooded and lost. *Dams can be vulnerable to bombardment during wartime, sabotage and terrorism. I would like to conclude by saying that the hydro energy is the simplest and most known renewable energy there is. It is perfect for balancing the energy system and for supplying power at peak times of the day. And it does not create greenhouse gasses. Thank you for listening. Identity as a personal project

about what I´ve done and what I will do next. It consists of changes and learning. “Through others we become ourselves.” Lev S. Vygotsky I really think that the biggest addiction is communication with others. That’s because we need to know, what they are thinking, how do they react for our behaviour and speech. On the special place here is understanding of “person” and it´s context. I do agree to Giddens, that it varies culturally. For example, the families are different – big or small, how many generations live together and what are they celebrating. Every culture has its own folklore and traditions, language and cuisine. All of these factors influence persons´ future and identity. Reading assumptions described by Wetherell and Maybin, I found myself recognising and sharing them. First, very important trait for persons from counties “such as the UK and USA” is democracy of expression. I do think, that in

Correlation between brand longevity and the diffusion of innovations theory

1. Knowledge – aka awareness, usually communicated through mass media 2. Persuasion – the individual is to be convinced by seeing others using it and seeing their problems being solved 3. Decision – the innovation is either adopted or rejected. If rejected, it could be adopted at a later time. Modern use of DOI ‘Underlying the DOI theory is that, in order to secure the successful diffusion of an innovation, it must be perceived as culturally relevant and appealing to the norms of the system one wishes to diffuse it into. This aspect applies to almost every area where the fields of communication, politics, marketing and public affairs are concerned.’ (Tina Gouws and George Peter van Rheede van Oudtshoorn p. 239) Thus, a lot of already well-known brands must change their message or visual in order to fit to the current time. What every company is looking for is repeat-buy or longevity of business. This also can be

Some products and services might even be found culturally unacceptable. • Package colours, sizes and styles, and product functions can all require adaptation because of cultural requirements. • Exporters of consumer products will be affected by a country’s culture more than exporters of industrial goods or components because consumer products must be designed to meet needs, values and beliefs. 7 MAIN CULTURAL FACTORS 1. smaller seasonal groups: winter camps (called "bands") of around 100 people and summer hunting groups of fewer than a dozen. Each band was roughly identified with a locale and named accordingly - eg, the Arvirtuurmiut of Boothia Peninsula were called "baleen whale-eating people." During roughly 4000 years of human history in the Arctic, the appearance of new people has brought continual cultural change. The ancestors of the present-day Inuit, who are culturally related to Inuppiat (northern Alaska), Katladlit (Greenland) and Yuit (Siberia and western Alaska), arrived about 1050 AD. As early as the 11th century the NORSE exerted an undetermined influence on the Inuit. The subsequent arrival of explorers, whalers, traders, missionaries, scientists and others began irreversible cultural changes. The Inuit themselves participated actively in these developments as guides, traders and models of survival. Despite

This is in very stark contrast to the early days of the American republic, when the country was generally seen as an agricultural backwater with little to offer the culturally advanced world centers of Europe and Asia. At the beginning of her third century, nearly every major American city offers classical and popular music; historical, scientific and art research centers and museums; dance performances, musicals and plays; outdoor art projects and internationally significant architecture. This development is a result of both contributions by private philanthropists and government funding.

THE CAPITALIST NIGER

There is the perception that just because the British, French, Spaniards, Portuguese or the other Europeans don’t directly send their government agents to live amongst us, that Africa is independent. Of the 53 African countries which make up the African continent, only four can claim to be independent either through their own actions or actions imposed on them by world bodies. Independence means being capable of effectively defending yourself, militarily, economically, socially and culturally. I can say it with certainty that the whole of Africa is incapable of defending itself on its own without outside aids, if one of the European powers decided to attack the continent. The reality of the situation is that Africa cannot defend itself, right now or in the near future. None of the weapons of war, either old or new warfare, is produced in Africa. None of the 53 countries, maybe with the exception of Egypt and South Africa (Caucasian apartheid monsters had started manufacturing war

The Rise and Demise of the New Public Management, 28 10

The Rise and Demise of the New Public Management Wolfgang Drechsler (University of Tartu and Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia) © Copyright: Wolfgang Drechsler 2005 Within the public sphere, the most important reform movement of the last quarter of a century has been the New Public Management (NPM). It is of particular interest in the post-autistic economics (pae) context because NPM largely rests on the same ideology and epistemology as standard textbook economics (STE) is based (for my take on this, see Drechsler 2000), and it has had, and still has, similar results. Already more on the defensive within public administration (PA) than STE is within economics, NPM also shows that such major paradigm shifts in theory and policy may actually happen. In addition, it occasionally appears that pae-oriented scholars have overlooked the fact that some features in public management refo...

But the St Petersburg government lacked both the power and the time to realise these plans. By the early 20th century, Estonia had become one of the economically and culturally most advanced areas of the whole empire with grand-scale industrial and agricultural production orientated at all-Russian markets. More than half of Estonia's national income before the First World War was created in industry. One manifestation in which tourists inhabit such a revised notion of home is Auroville in southern India, where Sharpley and Sundaram (2005) describe the communal lives of a number of ‘permanent tourists’ who have settled in an expatriate community based on utopian ideals. The most determined of this study’s utopia-seekers, however, narrated firm self-concepts and sought an external environment to match their culturally hybridised conceptions of self. Jackie (English, 26) related that a place would need to be extraordinary for her to consider ‘emptying out her backpack once and for all.’ Thomas (English, 29), who since being interviewed has settled on a remote Cambodian beach bungalow resort he purchased, depicted his own un-tethering from the UK: I’ve opted out of the society I grew up in. Groups differ in their interests. When the differences are due cultural/racial diversity, the greater will be the potential for antagonism within the group. A homogeneous group, in terms of race and class, is a potentially less conflictual group than a heterogeneous one. Coser tells us where the solution is be found. "Such a coalition, if it is not to fall apart, must attempt to keep close to the purposes for which it was formed." The only way to keep a culturally diverse group from focusing exclusively on its differences, is by enabling it "to keep close to the purposes for which it was formed." If there is any group that must know up front why it exists, it is a racially/ethnically diverse group. Without this purpose for existence clear in everyone's mind, differences will creep in which will divide and deviate the group. Thus, the need for a clear Mission Statement, based on a singular Vision and inclusive Values.

The word smash for example provides participants with verbal information that activates schemas for severe accidents. Loftus's research indicates that it is possible to crate false memories and that memory is not reliable. These were both controlled laboratory experiments, so the ecological validity suffered. It is argued that performing laboratory experiments on memory do not reflect how and what people remember in real life. The samples were US college students, so the studies were culturally biased. Roediger and McDermott argue that the context of their research is what makes the finding more impressive, since the students knew it was a memory test and inaccurate answers would be spotted. But other research has attempted to take this method to real life, by interviewing people who had witnessed a real robbery. Findings have shown that misleading questions did not seem to distort people's memory. Instead, they have shown that the memory

The recognition of children by the UNCRC as respected individuals with rights of their own has given impetus to a significant field of academic study. Since then, there has been increasing sociological interest in children which has provided a new perspective around the idea of children as social actors, and that childhood is not a natural phenomenon but a social 4 construct. It is now recognised that childhood is a culturally constructed phenomenon arising from human interaction.5 However, the new knowledge of children as competent 1 Mark Drankeford and Jonathan Scourfield and Sally Holland, `Welsh Children`s Views on Government and Participation`, Childhood, 16 (2) (2009) 247-264 (p. 249). 2 Invernizzi, A. & Williams, J, Children and Citizenship, (London: Sage Publications, 2008). 3 Howe Brian and Covell Katherine, Empowering Children:Children`s Rights
