Irish Potato Famine

Irish Potato Famine During the 19th century, 2/3 of the Irish people lived in very poor conditions under the British rule they had to work for upper-class English landlords, who never set foot in Ireland. The work was to raise crop for a tiny piece of land (most of tenants had less than an acre) where they could grow food (potatoes) for their own families. Potatoes were grown because they have all the necessary vitamins in them and only the potatoes would suffice to feed a family when grown on such tiny holdings. In 1845 a fungus, called Phytophthora infestans (commonly known as potato blight) attacked the potato crop and destroyed half of it. Yet, this was not a catastrophe and

Some recently developed cultivars have drooping heads. These cultivars are less attractive to gardeners growing the flowers as ornamental plants, but appeal to farmers, because they reduce bird damage and losses from some plant diseases. There are also new breeds of sunflowers which are transgenic, so that they are resistant to some diseases.[citation needed] Sunflowers also produce latex and are the subject of experiments to improve their suitability as an alternative crop for producing hypoallergenic rubber. Additionally, the stem of a dead sunflower can dry out open wounds.[citation needed] For farmers not intending to grow it, the sunflower is considered a noxious weed. The wild variety will grow unwanted in corn and soybean fields which can have a negative impact on yields. Canada

Canada has copper, lead, silver, gold and other metals. The discovery of rich oil fields in Alberta in 1947 has made oil production one of Canada's leading industries. South of Newfoundland is one of the greatest fishing regions in the world. Much of Canada is covered with forests. A great deal of the wood from the forests in Quebec is used for making paper. Western forests produce much timber. The farms of eastern Canada are rather small. Potatoes are an important crop. Near the Great Lakes there are many orchards. Stretching west from the Great Lakes and Hudson Bay, there are great prairies. Spring wheat is the chief crop but other crops are important, too. West of the prairies there is a mountain wonderland. The Canadian Rockies are higher than the Rockies in the United States. British Columbia has a climate much like the climate of southern England. The capital is the charming city of Victoria on Vancouver Island.

Biofuels production is concentrated in three countries: Brazil, the USA, and Europe On a global scale, there are three regions that produce biofuels: mainly France and Germany in Europe, the USA, and Brazil. Each region specialises on a specific crop, and the production technologies vary greatly. Biodiesel is concentrated in Europe and in 2005 France and Germany supplied 69% of the global biodiesel. Bioethanol production is concentrated in two countries: Brazil and the USA and in 2005, they together accounted for 80% of global ethanol production (Msangi et al. 2007; Zuurbier, 2008). While Brazil's biofuels production has grown steadily since the 1980s, then in the USA, the production started to hike in 2003

A great number of settlers were the Irish who left their country after the Irish Potato Famine on 1845-1849, when families lost their main food, the potato crop. During the journey, many people suffered from illnesses or died. When the boats arrived at Ellis island, new settlers often had to wait a medical examination. As many Irish immigrants were uneducated, the man worked at building bridges, canals and women became maids, cooks. Poor living conditions, lack of food and medical care led to illnesses and an early death. The population of the USA is more than 300 million. I think a lot of people would agree with me if I'd say that estonians, for example, are mostly pessimists and always seem to find something bad even in absolutely superb occasions. But, geographically speaking, the more south we go, the more positive attitudes people have. But of course even they have setback in life sometimes. It's up to us whether we want to guard ourselves from bad thoughts that crop up time to time or not but I think, although positive thinking sometimes yields significant benefits, it's worth it and is essential to healthy and happy life.

Agroterrorism involves the act of any person knowingly or maliciously using biological or other agents as weapons against the agricultural industry and the food supply-- plants and especially animals. Outbreaks caused by the deliberate spread of animal diseases by terrorists are likely to have much higher costs than natural occurrences or epidemics. Agricultural education and extension services inform farmers and livestock operators of the threats and work with farmers, veterinarians, and crop consultants to prevent and control plant and animal diseases Sum up : Terrorists often use violence and threats to create fear among the public, to try to convince people that their government is powerless to prevent acts of terrorism, and to get immediate publicity for their causes

By February 1621, 50% of the Pilgrim Fathers had died as a result of the cold weather and the inadequate housing that they had built for themselves. A Native American called Squanto helped those Pilgrim Fathers who survived the harsh winter. He showed them how to sow maize and how to cultivate the crop. Seeds brought from England were of little use in their new environment. By the summer of 1621, the Pilgrim Fathers had built houses for themselves and had gathered up a small harvest. They were well recovered in health and strength, and had all things in good plenty. For, as some were thus working in the fields, others took part in fishing for cod and bass and other fish. Of these, they took good store, a large amount of which every family had its share. All the summer there was of no want

culture to the colonies. On the other hand the Empire also helped its subjects to develop in a positive sense. In overall Britain ruled several parts of the world, like India, parts of Africa, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia, but also Ireland. Just to prove my point I will give some examples how the British Empire affected its subjects. In the 19th century British culture and way of life became predominate in Ireland. In the 1840s the potato crop failed two years in a row and a terrible famine occurred. Millions of peasants, those with Irish Gaelic language and customs either died or emigrated. As a result by the end of the century almost the whole population were using English as their first language. On the other hand the British Empire is not considered to be a very imposing ruler. For example in the 19th century in India a distinct Anglo-Indian way of life developed.

Soil microflora

Today, algae are used by humans in many ways; for example, as fertilizers, soil conditioners and livestock feed.[54] Aquatic and microscopic species are cultured in clear tanks or ponds and are either harvested or used to treat effluents pumped through the ponds. Algaculture on a large scale is an important type of aquaculture in some places. Maerl is commonly used as a soil conditioner. Factors incluencing soil microflora 1. Cultural practices (Tillage):Cultural practices viz. cultivation, crop rotation, application of manures and fertilizers, liming and gypsum application, pesticide/fungicide and weedicide application have their effect on soil organism. Ploughing and tillage operations facilitate aeration in soil and exposure of soil to sunshine and thereby increase the biological activity of organisms, particularly of bacteria. Crop rotation with legume maintains the favorable microbial population balance, particularly of N2 fixing bacteria and thereby improve soil fertility.

Hudson Bay there are great prairies. West of the prairies there is a mountain Wonderland. The Canadian Rockies are higher than the Rockies in the United States. Industry Furs, farms, forests, and fisheries make up much of Canada's wealth. But the Country is also rich in minerals. Canada has copper, lead, silver, gold and other minerals. Thousands of Canadians earn their living as fishermen. The farms of eastern Canada are rather small. Potatoes are an important crop. Population About 27 million people live in Canada. About 80% of them live within 300 kilometres of Canada's southern border. Much of the rest of Canada is uninhabited or thinly populated because the country has rugged terrain and a severe climate. Canada's people are varied. About 38% of all Canadian's are of British descent and 32% are of French descent. About 15% of Canada's people speak both English and French, the two official languages.

correct), and it was only later in 1930s that Cornelis Van Niel was able to propose the general equation for photosynthesis.3 It has taken hundreds of years for scientists to make sense of photosynthesis, but we don’t really value this information and it isn’t of much importance to us, the ordinary people. An argument for this would be the importance of understanding photosynthesis will help us grow a healthier crop for our population or efficiently. However, plants have been growing on earth for millions of years without the need of understanding the process of photosynthesis. We were able to produce food crops for our consumption and for trade/sale successfully even before photosynthesis was discovered and therefore we don't find it as valuable. When we compare photosynthesis to the discovery of the double helix in DNA structure which has helped scientists identify

and that so very few are offended with it' (Swift). The current essay attempts to analyze the use of satire in Jonathan Swift's most discussed pamphlet A Modest Proposal and the purposes of using this specific genre. The pamphlet reveals a vast number of social and religious problems: one of the major at those days was beggary. The satire was written in 1729, at the time, when economic situation of the country was extremely prejudiced by another crop failure. Thousands of poverty-stricken Irish were dying of starvation, causing the country's population to fall. However, despite the famine and constantly increasing number of deaths, the government did not implement measures to improve the existing situation. Thence, Swift, being an Irishman by birth and feeling disappointed of the ruling classes, proposes a solution to the problem by publishing his shocking work,

Essay on water pollution, global warming, acid rain, deforestation, intensive farming

The World Wildlife Fund says that every minute, 25 to 50 acres are cut or burned to the ground. The world's growing population has been a primary cause of rain forest destruction. More people need land to live on and wood products to consume. Limiting population growth may be the first in a series of steps that would limit the destruction of the rain forests. Intensive farming Advantages ✔ One of the major advantages of this farming technique is that the crop yield is high. ✔ It helps the farmer to easily supervise and monitor the land and protect his livestock from being hurt or hounded by dangerous wild animals. ✔ With the introduction of intensive farming, farm produce, such as vegetables, fruits, and poultry products have become less expensive. It also aids in solving the worldwide hunger problems to a great extent. This means that common people can now afford a balanced and nutritious diet.

The firs Aboriginals found an Australia with a better environment than today. Large animals now extinct provided more meat than the animals which we are familiar with. Some parts of the continent were richer in vegetable food, but there were no cultivated crops or animals that could be domesticated such as cattle and sheep. As Australia was isolated from the rest of the world, Aboriginals had very little contact with other people from whom to borrow techniques, to trade good, to acquire crop seeds, or animals. Each clan grouping occupied a well-defined area of land. The group belonged with, or to, the land - as well as the animals and plants. They had no idea of being able to buy or sell land. The land was given long ago, in the Dreamtime. Aborigines were limited to the food, which they had growing naturally in their area. But they knew when, where and how to find anything edible. But food was not obtained without effort. Inland, the search for water was a life and death matter

From the free trade point of view they also support that because it gives them a better conditions to move and sell their products all over the world. Although Coca-Cola says all that on their page I am a little skeptical about their point of view. There are a lot of scandals around Coca-Cola Company, for example the Kerala scandal in India where they drained many of the farmers water sources and therefore they lost their ability to use water for their personal use and for their crop. Another problem was their marketing scheme where they paid Warner Brothers 150$ million to promote their unhealthy products among young children with the Harry Potter movie. There are many more scandals related to Coca-Cola company and that comes to show us how they manipulate their consumers with their positive point of view to the world and to it's wonderful prosperity. Alberta's past when dinosaurs roamed the then lush landscape. Agriculture Agriculture has a significant position in the province's economy. The province has over three million head of cattle and Alberta beef has a healthy worldwide market. Nearly one half of all Canadian beef is produced in Alberta. Alberta is one of the prime producers of plains buffalo (bison) for the consumer market. Sheep for wool and mutton are also raised. Wheat is primary farm crop, with Alberta leading the provinces in spring wheat production; other grains are also prominent. Much of the farming is dryland farming, often with fallow seasons interspersed with cultivation. Continuous cropping (in which there is no fallow season) is gradually becoming a more common mode of production because of increased profits and a reduction of soil erosion. Across the province, the once common grain elevator is slowly being
