The Pre-Raphaelites

A genial, easy-going man, Millais enjoyed his success, claiming to be the highest-paid artist in history. He was the first painter to be created a baronet (1885) and was made President of the Royal Academy months before his death. "Christ in the House of his Parents" (1850) - the holy family with radical realism. Very brown colours. The critics disliked the painting because it showed the Christ's family as it was ordinary. His reputation was saved by the intervention of Ruskin who was also a critic bud who defended him. The publicity excited by the painting provoked Queen Victoria into requesting a private viewing. Her opinion is not known. "Ophelia" ( 1852) oil on canvas- many Shakespearean allusions(vihjed)- for example the rose in her hand implies to his brother Laertes (because he had discribed her as the rose of may). Millais spent a lot of time studying the exact stream and how the trees shed light on it. His model was Elizabeth Siddal who was later Rossetti's wife

What is expected of a graduate of the 21st century

role in my development for almost three years now. When asked what is the main purpose of university, most people would say that it is preparing students for different proffessions, which would later be the driving force of the country. But I think it is more complicated than that. Going to university is a logical step to a ambitious young high school graduate and some even don’t consider other possibilities. On the other hand, universities are getting a lot of critic because some say that the goal of universities are to produce as many diploma graduates as possible. I think that universities are places where young people who doesn’t know yet what they want from life, can use this time to discover their true interests. Im sure that many young high school graduates who start study in university are at first not very passionate about their speciality because they dont know what to expect and if their choice is right

The Death of the Author

Once the Author is gone, the claim to “decipher” a text becomes quite useless. To give an Author to a text is to impose upon that text a stop clause, to furnish it with a final signification, to close the writing. This conception perfectly suits criticism, which can then take as its major task the discovery of the Author (or his hypostases: society, history, the psyche, freedom) beneath the work: once the Author is discovered, the text is “explained:’ the critic has conquered; hence it is scarcely surprising not only that, historically, the reign of the Author should also have been that of the Critic, but that criticism (even “new criticism”) should be overthrown along with the Author. In a multiple writing, indeed, everything is to be distinguished, but nothing deciphered; structure can be followed, “threaded” (like a stocking that has run) in all its recurren-

Talent J From a young age, Dodgson wrote poetry and short stories, both contributing heavily to the family magazine Mischmasch and later sending them to various magazines, enjoying moderate success. Between 1854 and 1856, his work appeared in the national publications, The Comic Times and The Train, as well as smaller magazines like the Whitby Gazette and the Oxford Critic. Most of this output was humorous, sometimes satirical, but his standards and ambitions were exacting. "I do not think I have yet written anything worthy of real publication (in which I do not include the Whitby Gazette or the Oxonian Advertiser), but I do not despair of doing so some day," he wrote in July 1855. In 1856 he published his first piece of work under the name that would make him famous

The Life of Dante, the Inferno of Dante

(386-387) Maritain observes that Dante combines feelings, distinct images, and a continuous and complex narrative of a world of an adventure and destiny in the Inferno. He feels that the entire poem clearly shows, that through love, Dante knew his characters, understood their suffering, and knew his characters desires. These traits and Dante's ability to express his dream caused Maritain to believe that Dante had the eye of a genuine novelist. Ezra Pound, an American poet and critic, believes that one hears far too much about Dante's Hell, and far too little about the Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Pound wrote an essay called "Dante" in his book, The Spirit of Romance written in 1952. He explains how Hell is the state of man who has lost the good of his intelligence, a state of man dominated by his passions. (129) Pound believes that Dante's Inferno should be approached with a "sense of irony." His use of simile is carried throughout the Inferno

biography, at least to a certain extent. In the centre of the book edited by Regan one finds a hilariously subversive essay: Graham Holderness’s “Reading ‘Deceptions’”, a text balanced on the borderline between literary criticism and fiction. It offers four readings of Larkin’s “Deceptions” by four fictitious characters in the same university department: a formalist, a Marxist, a feminist and a post-structuralist critic. Holderness’s parodistic readings have a central position in the volume for precisely the same reason as Larkin’s “Posterity” does in High Windows. In the first place, the poem entitles the reader to see Larkin through the eyes of Jake Balokowsky, his fictitious biographer, but Larkin also ridicules this young cosmopolitan scholar. Holderness’s Cleanth, Raymond, Kate, and Colin are both serious and ludicrous

In the 19th century German cultural influences were the attainable means to gain an insight into advanced Western culture, as well as other world cultures. We may argue that the process of “national awakening” had a connection with the resurgence of the Baltic-German culture. The ideas of the German Enlightenment philosopher and critic Johann Gottfried von Herder (1744-1803), the theorist of Sturm und Drang, had exerted an influence on the emerging Estonian intelligentsia. In this respect, Tartu University, having international connections and developing an international reputation, had a remarkable effect on the cultural thought of the whole nation. The Russification policies of the late 19th century restrained the development of national cultural life. It was a specific counter-attack on the influence of German

Questions 1 Can you think of any further objections to the Referential Theory as stated here? 2 Are objections 1 and 2 entirely fair, or are there plausible replies that the referential theorist might make? Further reading · Probably the most persistent critic of the Referential Theory is Wittgenstein (1953: Part I). A more systematic Wittgensteinian attack is found in Waismann (1965a: ch. 8). · Arguments of the sort lying behind objection 3 are found in Frege (1892/1952a) and (1892/1952b). · Bradley's regress is further discussed by Wolterstorff (1970: ch. 4) and by Loux (1998: ch. 1). Yardley was a superb storyteller, and his narrative skill did not desert him on paper. Largely owing to this and to his vigorous and pungent style, the book itself, The American Black Chamber, was an immediate success, and it instantly fixed itself in popular lore as the epitome of books on cryptology. Even today, it is invariably mentioned in any cocktail-party discussion of the subject, and copies remain in demand among secondhand book dealers. Reviews of it were unanimously good. Critic W. A. Roberts, in a commendatory review, summed up the prevailing opinion: "I think it the most sensational contribution to the secret history of the war, as well as the immediate post-war period, Which has yet been written by an American. Its deliberate indiscretions exceed any to be found in the recent memoirs of European secret agents." Reporters hastened to governmental bureaus to inquire whether it was all true. The State Department, with masterfully
