Westminster Abbey was built by Edward the Confessor and opened in 1065. It is one of the most important Gothic buildings in the country and in the world. In 1066, it saw its first coronation, that of William the Conqueror. Since then, nearly every king and queen has been coronated there. On 17 September 2010, Pope Benedict XVI became the first pope to set foot in Westminster Abbey. The Abbey has also been the church since 1066. The Tower of London

The Tower in the Middle Ages The Tower of London, that formidable symbol of England's national heritage, served as a royal residence as well as a prison in the medieval period. The monarch traditionally spent the night at the Tower prior to his or her coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey. It has been the stage on which much of England's dramatic but often sad and bloody saga of royal history has been played out. The founding of the Tower The Tower of London was founded by King William the Conqueror. After his coronation on Christmas Day, 1066, William hastily ordered the erection of a wooden fortress between the Thames and the ancient Roman wall which then surrounded London.

The Norman Conquest

The Norman Conquest William I (the Conqueror) (1066 - 1087) On October 14, in the fateful Battle of Hastings, William defeated and killed Harold and seized the English throne. Two months after the Battle of Hastings, William I was crowned king in Westminster Abbey. The service was held on Christmas Day 1066, with all the traditional ceremonies associated with the coronation of English kings since the time of Edgar. William had gained his throne by accepting the English form of coronation, William emphasised his claim to be legitimate successor to Edward the Confessor. William I was a strong king and a man of immense determination. He was stern to people who opposed his will, but kindly disposed to those who did not. William saw England as an extension of his French domains. He dispossessed nearly all the Anglo-Saxon nobles of their lands, and put Normans in their places. These men discouraged rebellion by building strong castles throughout the country, especially in Wales

It is one of the United Kingdom's most notable religious buildings and the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English and, later, British monarchs. Between 1540 and 1556, the abbey had the status of a cathedral. Since 1560, however, the building is no longer an abbey nor a cathedral, having instead the status of a Church of England "Royal Peculiar"--a church responsible directly to the sovereign. The Tower is famous as home of the Crown Jewels. Today they can be viewed in their special jewel house ( built in 1967) from a moving pavement. They include the Crown of Queen Elisabeth the Queen Mother which contains the celebrated Indian diamond, the Koh-I- noor and St .Edward's Crown which is used for actual crowning of the monarch and weighs over two kilograms. The Imperial State Crown was made for Queen Victoria and first used at her coronation in 1838. It is possibly the most valuable crown in the world, containing many precious diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. For centuries the Tower of London has been the main arsenal in the kingdom from which the royal armies and fleets were equipped. It also housed king's personal armours and weapons. Among the armour on display in the White Tower Armoury are four suits of Henry VII. They are of different sizes because Henry grew fatter with age.
