John Harvey Kellogg (February 26, 1852 December 14, 1943) was an American medical doctor in Battle Creek, Michigan, who ran a sanitarium using holistic methods, with a particular focus on nutrition, enemas, and exercise. Kellogg was an advocate of vegetarianism and is best known for the invention of the corn flakes breakfast cereal with his brother, Will Keith Kellogg. Thanksgiving

TOPIC 4 Thanksgiving In the United States, the fourth Thursday in November is called Thanksgiving Day. It is usually a family day celebrated with big dinners. On this day, Americans give thanks for the blessings they have enjoyed during the year The first Thanksgiving was held in Plymouth in the 17th century. The people of Plymouth had come to America from England. In their native land they had been called Puritans, but they called themselves Pilgrims. When the Pilgrims landed in America they were poorly trained to cope with life in the wilderness. One spring morning an Indian came into the little village of Plymouth . Later, he brought The Indian chief, who gave gifts and offered assistance. The Indians taught the Pilgrims how to hunt, fish and grow food. They also taught them, how to use fish for fertilizer in growing corn, pumpkin and beans. The Pilgrims had a good harvest. Governor William Bradford issued a proclamation establishin...

Essay about Food Inc

Food Inc. is a 2008 American documentary film directed by filmmaker Robert Kenner. Food Inc. is about corporate farming in the United States, where farms produce food that is unhealthy, in a way that is environmentally harmful and abusive of both animals and employees. The main problem is how the animals are raised, how they are slaughtered and how the meat is manufactured. Farms are controlled by big food industries. Cows are fed corn instead of grass, because corn is cheeper and makes cows obese more quickly. Because of the unhealthy environment animals are raised in, they get infected with salmonella and coliform bacteria. Salmonella and coliform bacteria infected food can lead to serious diseases and death. The chickens are raised in dark rooms, where there isn’t even room to move. They live in the middle of their own droppings and they eat each other. They are fed stuff that make them grow faster and bigger

Sustainability aspects of biofuels

Biofuels' feedstock production has shifted the land area away from maize for food and animal feed production. On the other hand, as maize is more profitable to grow due to biofuels, some farmers have shifted their cultivation from rice and wheat cultivation to maize. As a result, the prices of all staple crops, such as rice, wheat and maize have been affected (Rosegrant, 2008). Corn is one of the most widely used food staples in the world. In 2005, the US produced 42% of the world's corn and it is has a variety of uses. About 50% of the field corn grown in the USA is used for animal feed, but smaller volumes, i.e. 10% is used for direct human consumption in corn based meals. Corn is also important in providing cooking oil and margarine in the USA. In addition, corn sweeteners supply more than 56% of the sweeteners market in the US (Soyatech, 2012). Nevertheless, it has been hard to predict how decreased production actually has impacted the food market

Sunflower

There are also new breeds of sunflowers which are transgenic, so that they are resistant to some diseases.[citation needed] Sunflowers also produce latex and are the subject of experiments to improve their suitability as an alternative crop for producing hypoallergenic rubber. Additionally, the stem of a dead sunflower can dry out open wounds.[citation needed] For farmers not intending to grow it, the sunflower is considered a noxious weed. The wild variety will grow unwanted in corn and soybean fields which can have a negative impact on yields. Diseases Main article: List of sunflower diseases Greek myth In Greek mythology, a girl named Clytie fell in love with the sun god Apollo, and would do nothing but watch his chariot move across the sky. After nine days, she was transformed into a sunflower. However, the word "sunflower" and its cognates existed long before Helianthus annuus was brought to Europe, and it is thought that the myth

Windpower

Wind power is very old power source, sailing ships have been using wind power for at least 5,500 years. The first practical windmills were built in Afghanistan, from the 7th century to grind corn and draw up water. The first windmill for electricity production was built in Scotland in 1887 to power the lighting in the cottage, thus making it the first house in the world to have its electricity supplied by wind power. During the Second World War, small wind generators were to recharge submarine batteries. In the 1990s, wind power became more important, because fossil fuels pollute the atmosphere and humanity needed alternative fuels. That's because wind power is so necessary

The celebration lasted 3 days. The holiday was a great success. Later, Thanksgiving was celebrated in all the colonies of New England. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it a national thanksgiving. The modern Thanksgiving turkey is much like the ones hunted in Plymouth. Squash, corn, pumpkin pie and Indian pudding appear on the Thanksgiving table. Today Thanksgiving lasts for 4 days. It's a family day and also a day of hospitality and giving.

mood. Breakfast remains essential to a healthy lifestyle; it replenishes person's supply of glucose and provides other essential nutrients to keep your energy levels up throughout the day. That's why I consider breakfast to be the most important meal in the day as it is the first our meal in the morning and it can put us in good spirits for the whole day. Now I shall tell you about my own breakfast. In the morning I usually have porridge or corn flakes. Sometimes I start my breakfast with a cereal which is not cooked, it is something dry, ready to be eaten or muesli some grain or porridge which is not cooked with dried fruit, nuts and so on. I also like eating eggs (cooked in different ways). I don't practically eat butter; I prefer soft margarine made of vegetable fat, which is not heavy and creamy. I don't eat jam at breakfast, I eat marmalade which is not sweet, there is slight bitterness; it's rather pleasant for my taste.

Dickinson also says that true fame is something one can achieve only once ("Whose table once a Guest, but not / The second time is set"). She goes on to explain that after fame has faded, its not too pleasant insides become visible and even the crows inspect the leftovers, but decide to turn to the farmer's corn. The crows could also represent the many followers famous people get (fans etc), who turn away as soon as they see the fame becoming less bright. Dickinson ends the poem by saying that men, who eat the dish of fame, die. This means that they have spent their lives in search and pursuit of fame and have lost sight of everything important. Stylistically it is a very lovely poem. It flows nicely, although there is an abrupt change of pace in

Greens. Greens are packed with calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc, vitamins A, C, E and K, and they help strengthen the blood and respiratory systems. Be adventurous with your greens and branch out beyond bright and dark green lettuce --kale, mustard greens, broccoli, Chinese cabbage are just a few of the options. Sweet vegetables. Naturally sweet vegetables add healthy sweetness to your meals and reduce your cravings for other sweets. Some examples of sweet vegetables are corn, carrots, beets, sweet potatoes or yams, winter squash, and onions. Fruits. A wide variety of fruit is also vital to a healthy diet. Fruit provides fiber, vitamins and antioxidants. Berries are cancer-fighting, apples provide fiber, oranges and mangos offer vitamin C, and so on. k to edit Master text styles Second level Third level Fourth level Fifth level

Toon mõned näited ,milline on rasva sisaldus ainetes 100 grammi kohta: Õli, kookosrasv, searasv -100 g Seapekk -89 g Või, majonees - 80 g Sarapuupähklid - 63 g Juust, kõrge rasvasusega; maapähkel - 47 g Pop corn - 43 g Shokolaad, suitsuvorst, kookospähkel, angerjas -35 g Sealiha, glasuurkohuke, kringel, segahakkliha, sardiin tomatis -15g Loomseid rasvu saadakse toorainest väljasulatamisel või kuumalt väljapressimisel. Rasval on kaitseülesanne, eeskätt

The importance of the rainforest

whole. Sadly, it has taken only a century of human intervention to destroy what nature designed to last forever. The scale of human pressures on ecosystems everywhere has increased enormously in the last few decades. Since 1980 the global economy has tripled in size and the world population has increased by 30 percent. Consumption of everything on the planet has risen- at a cost to our ecosystems. In 2001, The World Resources Institute estimated that the demand for rice, wheat, and corn is expected to grow by 40% by 2020, increasing irrigation water demands by 50% or more. They further reported that the demand for wood could double by the year 2050; unfortunately, it is still the tropical forests of the world that supply the bulk of the world's demand for wood. In 1950, about 15 percent of the Earth's land surface was covered by rainforest. Today, more than half has already gone up in smoke. In fewer than fifty years, more than half of the

History of the USA.

In 1620 a new group of British settlers reached Plymouth, Massachusetts, with a ship called Mayflower and they were called 'Pilgrim Fathers' due to their strong belief in religion. They left England because they didn't agree with the Church of England. They became farmers and businessmen who thought that all men were equal and they didn't have slaves. Many of the Pilgrims died in the first year in America, but they were helped by the Indians, who showed them how to grow corn. In the autumn of 1621, the Pilgrims had a big dinner to thank the Indians who had helped them to survive the hard winter. That day is now known as Thanksgiving and is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in America. More and more people arrived. Over a time settlers from many other countries joined the English in America the French, the Spaniards and the Dutch. Africans were first brought to Virginia in 1619.

Loodusvööndid

Loodusvööndid · Jää- ja külmakõrbed. Asuvad polaarvöötmes. Maakera põhja- ja lõunapoolust ümbritsevad alad on kaetud säravvalge jää ja lumega. Neid polaaraladel paiknevaid igilume ja püsiva jääkatte all olevaid alasid nimetatakse jää- ja külmakõrbedeks. Kliima on väga karm ja õhutempeatuur suuremal osal alast on aasta läbi alla 0 kraadi. Kliima karmust suurendab polaarpäeva ja polaaröö vaheldumine. Arktika: talvine õhutemperatuur on umbes -50 kraadi, sademed enamasti lumena ja umbes 100-200mm aastas, sajuga kaasned tugev tuul, virmalised, elustik on liigivaene, kasvavad vetikad, mõne lumevaba kuu jooksul kasvavad ka õistaimed nt. polaarmagun, loomadest on sinivaal, morsk, hülged, kotikud, kalad, jääkaru, polaarrebane, polaarkajakad, hahad, püsiv asutus puudub, töötavad polaarjaamad. Antarktika: kõige karmim kliima maakeral, suvel on õhutempeatuur -30...-35 kraadi, talvel on tavaline -70 kraadi, tuge...

Renewable energy

low concentrations. Another concern is the disposal of some geothermal fluids, which may contain low levels of toxic materials. Although geothermal sites are capable of providing heat for many decades, eventually specific locations may cool down. Biomass energy Biomass is any material that comes from plants or microorganisms that were recently living. Trees, branches, scraps of bark, and recycled paper are common sources of biomass energy. Manure, garbage, and crops such as corn, soy, and sugar cane can also be used as biomass feedstocks. We get energy from biomass by burning it. Wood chips, manure, and garbage are dried out and compressed into squares called "briquettes." Biomass can also be converted into biofuel. A major advantage of biomass is that it can be stored and used when it is needed. Negative aspects of biomass energy Growing crops for biofuels requires large amounts of land and pesticides. Some pesticides could pollute the air and water.

Teacher's questions

Yes, I do. That because then I know what I'm eating. Sometimes the imported food is not very clean. Imported food consist many preservatives and toxics. It's not very healthy. But sometimes the Estonia food choice is quite small. Sometimes we must buy food what is imported to our country. 5. Which Estonian foods would you export? Why? I don't know exactly, but I think that maybe rye, because the ryes grow quite good in Estonia. Rye is important corn for Estonians. Maybe I should export some vegetables too, because I think that Estonians vegetables are the best in the world. Especially potatoes are quite good. EDUCATION AND JOB 1. Tselluloos

Seni on tselluloosist etanooli toodetud lühiajaliselt erinevate pilootprojektide käigus. Abengoa S.A. 1941 uses an innovative enzymatic hydrolysis process to convert non-edible corn stalks, stems and leaves into up to 25 million gallons of ethanol per year. The project maximizes the use of agricultural crop residues that would otherwise remain idle, and utilizes feedstock that does not compete with feed grains. Natuke infot Eesti ebaõnnestumiste kohta Balti mere idakalda riikides arvestatavaid bioetanooli tootjaid ei ole. On Leedu MV grupi ettevõttele Biofuture kuuluv Silute tehas aastase tootmismahuga kuni 36 000 tonni. See on kokku
