Argumentative Essay

To this very day there are countries whose flags are market with Great Britain's flag. The most notorious of those is of course Australia. From the economical point of view monarchy in Britain is not so great. They do bring in more than they spend but the costs to keep up with the needs of the mansions, summerhouses, traveling come from the people. But the income does not go to the common wealth. Only the few businessmen profit from the lives of the Royal Family. The British Empire did conquer many places but they did not do it just to help the people. They did it to get the resources and workers for the least amount of money. The ,,helping" was just a smokescreen. Australia for example was nothing more than a dumping ground for criminals, thieves - the unwanted. Some part of those ,,flag bearers" still hold a grudge for it. The current monarchy has changed into constitutional monarchy. The role of the

The Medieval period

The Medieval period The Middle Ages began in 1066, when the Normans defeated Anglo-saxons at the Battle of Hastings. Now England had a Norman king William the Conquer. Norman kings ruled in England less than 100 years, during that time Normans brought England closer to the mainstream of European society. William introduced the feudalism. Under it, land was divided among noble overlords, or barons. Knights pledged their wealth and services to the overlords. In return overlords let them use their land. At the lowest end of the social scale were the serfs, peasants bound to the land. In 1154 the Norman time was at the end. In 1154 Henry II started to reign

William the Conqueror

Harold was crowned the King of England on January 5 th, 1066 . William was more than angry when he heard this. He gathered an army all over Europe and started the battle for the crown. William landed in the south of England near a town called Hastings. The Battle of Hastings took place on the 14th of October, 1066 .The Normans outnumbered the Anglo-Saxon forces and were better armed. Normans won the Battle and King Harold was killed, England was invaded. It took several years to conquer the whole England. The Normans encircled London and the Anglo-Saxon nobility had to acknowledge William as the rightful king of England. In 1071 the invasion was completed. He divided the country into seven parts making one of it the royal domain. He built many castles all over England. William replaced the council of noblemen by a Great Council which consisted of bishops and barons. William had four sons, including the future kings William II and Henry I and six daughters.

Speech: Ideas are our greatest weapons

Speech: Ideas are our greatest weapons Hello class and classmates, I would like to open up my speech with a quote that I find really amazing: „The pen is mightier than the sword”. Sadly I don't know whose it is, but it means, that not every war has to be fought with swords and weapons, coming up with an idea about something that isn't violent might be a lot easier way to conquer in life. I think that all of you know that every tool, weapon, Everything that surrounds us, has started with an idea. That shouldn't be new for you. Some people might find it hard to believe, but even the most common things- like chairs, walls, even a pack of bread has been an idea once. Someone had probably felt that his or her legs got tired and sitting on floor might not be so comfortable, so one chose to invent a chair

Satire in Lilliput

Gulliver's first adventure takes place in Lilliput. Gulliver gets shipwrecked and finds himself tied down by a considerable number of little people called Lilliputians. The Lilliputians stood only six inches high. During this time Swift recognized that England was also small in stature but was dominant force and had a great influence in Europe. England, despite its small size, had the potential to defeat any nation that might try to conquer them. Swift relates this situation with the Lilliputians. They only stood six inches tall but had the power to take on the, "ManMountain", Gulliver. The ability of the Lilliputians to capture someone ten times their size can be seen as reinforcing their strength as a small nation, such as England. Thus becoming and remaining a great and powerful country. Swift's personal life surfaced when Queen Anne represented the Lilliputian Empress. She was

Indians

Even the Indians themselves were a resource - souls ripe for the Jesuit, Dominican, or Puritan plucking. It was the Europeans' cultural arrogance, coupled with their materialistic view of the land and its animal and plant beings, that the Indians found repellent. Europeans, in sum, were regarded as something mechanical - soulless creatures who wielded diabolically ingenious tools and weapons to accomplish mad ends. The Europeans brought with them not only a desire and will to conquer the new continent for all its material richness, but they also brought with them diseases that hit the Indians hard. Conflicts developed between the Native Americans and the Invaders, the latter arriving in overwhelming numbers, as many "as the stars in heaven". The Europeans were accustomed to own land and laid claim to it while they considered the Indians to be nomads with no interest to claim land ownership. The conflicts led to the Indian Wars, the

invasion of Britain. General Plautius led four legions with 25,000 men, plus an equal number of auxiliary soldiers. The biggest battle was fought on the banks of the River Medway. It went on for two days before the Celtic tribes retreated. Many tribes tried to resist the Romans. It took about four years for the invaders to finally gain control over southern England, and another 30 years for them to conquer all of the West Country and the mountains and valleys of Wales. The battle for Yorkshire and the remainder of northern England was still underway in AD 70 The first Roman city was Camulodunum also called Colonia Vitricencis. It was the seat of Roman power and governance of Brittania until sacked during the Boudiccan revolt. Why the Romans came to Britain is not quite certain. Two reasons have been suggested:

Estonian War of Independence

Estonian War of Independence During World War I the greatest colonial power in Europe the Russian Empire seized to exist. On its ruins the formerly enchained nations founded their own states. Among them was the Estonian Republic, officially declared on February 24, 1918. When Germany surrendered to the Western Allies on November 11, 1918 a strategic vacuum arose in Eastern Europe. The new rulers of Russia the Bolsheviks decided to use it as a proper moment to re-conquer their lost territories. The ultimate goal was international communist revolution and Germany was the first standing on their way. Thus on November 13, 1918 the Government of Soviet Russia denounced peace with Germany. On November 16 the Commander-in-Chief of the Red Army, Jukums Vacietis, gave orders to start a massive attack on a long front from the Gulf of Finland to the Ukraine. On November 28, two divisions of the Red Army (altogether 12,000 troops) crossed...

Spanish California

Spanish California The fifteenth century saw the completion of the reconquest of Spain and the emergence of Ferdinand and Isabella as the rulers of an expansionist empire eager to spread Christianity to distant lands and increase the wealth and power of Spain in the process.. Immediately after Christopher Columbus's discovery of the Americas in 1492, Spain began a series of expeditions into North, Central and South America. In 1519 Hernan Cortes began a campaign to conquer Tenochtitlan. It took several years but eventually he prevailed. The Aztec capital was razed to the ground and replaced by Mexico City. Mexico City quickly became the political/military center for most of Spain's possessions in North and Central America - what they were to call New Spain. The conquistadores brought great wealth to the throne but they also posed potential political risks as they grew stronger. The Spanish monarchy sought to neutralize those risks

The Saxons & Vikings

So the first ,,English" became mainly from Northern Germany & Denmark. The resistance of the Celts was long. They were free at the time, not like other Roman provinces on the Continent. Around 500, the Britons seem to have won several victories. One of their leaders was Ambrosius Aurelianus and one of their victories was at the place called Mount Badon. The main leader of the Britons at this time may have been the warrior later called King Arthur. By the 7th cent. the invaders managed to conquer the greater part of the land. The invaders came from 3 powerful tribes: · The Saxons settled from the Thames Estuary westwards, in the south of England; they formed the kingdoms of Sussex, Wessex, Essex & Middlesex · The Angles settled in East Anglia, the Midlands & Northumbria · The Jutes settled mainly in Kent, Hampshire & the Isle of Wight The name Jutes died out & the conquerors are generally referred to as the Anglo-Saxons. Legends of Tallinn

Tallinn is well known for its medieval city. It is not only old houses and streets that have survived, but also legends connect to them that have reached us. Tallinn was first mentioned in the historical books of the Arabic geographer. If the primeval city walls could talk, they would tell us stories better than any adventure book. The walls have seen it all: the black pestilence, the great fire of Tallinn and brave warriors. Many big and powerful countries have conquer Estonia, but Estonia has always fought for their freedom. Many legends are related to those countries who have conquered Estonia. For example, Danish, Russia and Germany. There are many legends of tallinn. For example Linda's rock, Old Thomas, Old Man of Ülemiste Lake , St. Olav's Church and Reval. 2 Legend of St. Olav's Church In old times, when Estonia was small country, people often thought of how to raise

Finland

(New knowledge library: universal reference encyclopedia) 7 History The first inhabitants of Finland were the Sami (Lapp) people. When Finnish speakers migrated to Finland in the first millennium B.C., the Sami were forced to move northward to the arctic regions, with which they are traditionally associated. The Finns' repeated raids on the Scandinavian coast impelled Eric IX, the Swedish king, to conquer the country in 1157. It was made a part of the Swedish kingdom and converted to Christianity. By 1809 the whole of Finland was conquered by Alexander I of Russia, who set up Finland as a grand duchy. The period of Russification (18091914) sapped Finnish political power and made Russian the country's official language. When Russia became engulfed by the March Revolution of 1917, Finland seized the opportunity to declare independence on Dec. 6, 1917. The USSR attacked Finland on Nov

The City on London

The City of London History The City of London occupies one square mile in the middle of the capital. It once made up the entire town of London, surrounded by the wall first built by the Romans. The Roman Londinium grew up on the northern side of the "London Bridge" in the past. Products such as olive oil, wines and fruit were brought by ships from different parts of the Roman Empire and unloaded onto wooden quays along the river. In AD 61 the native Celtic Iceni tribe, led by Queen Boudicca, rose up against The Romans. They burnt Londinium to the ground but Roman armies eventually defeated Boudicca. The city was rebuilt and was gradually surrounded with a wall of stone and brick which lasted for many centuries. During the archeological excavations in 1954 the Roman Temple of Mithras was revealed. It was a pagan temple dedicated to the Persian Sun-god. The Temple was later reconstructed only a short way...

while Cambridge leaned more towards the sciences and produced more acclaimed scholars. However, it was not compulsory, either legally or socially, for a gentleman to attend school at all. He could, just as easily, be taught entirely at home. However, public school and University were the great staging grounds for public life, where you made your friends and developed the connections that would aid you later in life. Beau Brummel met the Prince of Wales at Eton and that friendship helped him conquer all of London Society despite his lack of family background. A lady's education was taken, almost entirely, at home. There were boarding schools, but no University, and the studies were very different. She learned French, drawing, dancing, music, and the use of globes. If the school, or the governess, was interested in teaching any practical skills, she learned plain sewing as well as embroidery, and accounts. 1. 19. sajandi ideoloogiad: konservatism, liberalism, sotsialism (utoopiline s,

The Middle Ages

In 1215 King John was forced by the Barons to sign the Magna Carta, which was a collection of 37 English laws. The purpose of the Magna Carta was to curb the King and make him govern by the old English laws that had prevailed before the Normans came. King John's reign lasted until 1216. Then the power was taken over by his son King Henry III. He leaded England for a very long time, until 1272. He was succeeded by his son Edward I. Edward I conquered Wales in 1284. He also tried to conquer Scotland and it even went right for him but only temporarily. Under the direction of Robert Bruce Scotland managed to restore its independence. In 1307 he was succeeded by Edward II, his son. In 1311-1315 there was the Great Famine. There was a series of cold and wet springs and early winters that reduced harvests throughout western Europe, and by the Spring of 1315, about ten percent of the population had died of

The preservation of traditional cultural landscapes is important as well. 5 History To the Nineteenth Century The Estonians settled in their present territory before the Christian era. They were mentioned by Tacitus 1st century A.D., who called them Aesti. In the 13th cent. the Danes and the German order of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword formed an alliance to conquer the pagan Estonian tribes. The Danes founded Reval (now Tallinn) in 1219 and introduced Christianity and Western European culture to Estonia. While Denmark took the northern part of Estonia, the knights occupied the southern portion. In 1346 the Danes sold their territory to the order, and Estonia remained under the rule of the knights and the Hanseatic merchants until the order's dissolution in 1561.

However, the GDP of Estonia decreased by 1.4% in the 2nd quarter of 2008, over 3% in the 3rd quarter of 2008, and over 9% in the 4rd quarter of 2008. History The Estonians, an ancient people, originally came from a region just west of the Ural Mountains. Historical references to Estonia begin in the 1100's. At that time the region was divided into small pagan states. Beginning in 1202, an order of German crusading knights from Livonia (Latvia) joined with the Danes to conquer and 2 Christianize the Estonians. By 1227 the Danes controlled northern Estonia; the Livonian Knights, southern Estonia. The Teutonic Knights, another German crusading order, gained control of southern Estonia in 1237 and later conquered all of Estonia. The Teutonic Knights withdrew from Estonia in 1560. Sweden and Poland then fought for control of Estonia; in 1629, Sweden won and annexed the region

Public Administration and Innovation

resources: “Innovation is possible without anything we should identify as invention and invention does not necessarily induce innovation, but produces of itself no economically relevant effect at all” (Schumpeter 1939, 59) Innovations are produced by entrepreneurs: ● “the dream and the will to found a private kingdom, usually, though not necessarily, also a dynasty” ● the “will to conquer: the impulse to fight, to prove oneself superior to others, to succeed for the sake, not of the fruits of success, but of success itself,” and/or ● the “joy of creating, of getting things done, or simply of exercising one's energy and ingenuity” (Schumpeter 1934, 93) Entrepreneurs – bearers of the mechanism of change It is however the producer who as a rule initiates economic change, and consumers

Scotland

The Roman invasion under Quintus Petillius Cerialis began in AD 71 and culminated in the battle of Mons Graupius at an unknown location in northern Scotland in 84. Although the Caledonian confederacy suffered a defeat it was not long before the legions abandoned their territorial gains and returned to a line south of the Solway Firth, later consolidated by the construction of Hadrian's Wall. Roman commanders subsequently made various attempts to conquer territory to the north of this line, including the building of the Antonine Wall and the later Severan campaigns but their success was similarly shortlived. Roman forces ceased to have a significant impact after 211. By the close of the Roman occupation of Britain in the fifth century the Picts had emerged as the dominant force in northern Scotland, with the various Brythonic tribes the Romans had first encountered there occupying the southern half of the country.

ASPECTS OF BRITISH HISTORY

A large Roman army landed there in 43 AD. The tribes of south- eastern Britain were defeated. The Romans then advanced northwards and westwards from London, building roads and establishing forts. They had little difficulty because they had a better-trained army and because the Celtic tribes fought among themselves. By AD 61, the Romans controlled most of present-day England and Wales. They then occupied the southern part of the island for more than 350 years. The Romans failed to conquer Scotland. In the 120s the Emperor Hadrian built a strong wall to defend Roman Britain from raids by the Scots, Picts and other tribes from the North2. Twenty years later Roman forces built a second defensive wall further north but they could not hold it against Scottish raiders and eventually abandoned it. To fight with the raiders and to put down frequent armed rebellions, Rome had to keep an army of about 40,000 men in the province3. Roman Britain

Blest with victory and peace, may the Heaven-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! 23

including Parliament House, the High Court and the Royal Australian Mint 14 . History The first human habitation of Australia is estimated to have occurred 50,000 years ago. More than 6000 years before the arrival of the European settlers Aboriginal people inhabited most areas of the Australian European settlement. There were estimated 300,000 Indigenous Australians living on the continent. By the end of 19th century, because of the white people who came to conquer the new lands and mine the gold, there were only 60 000 native Australians left. Now there are about 160 000 Aborigines in Australia. Most of them live in the cities but some of them still try to follow the steps of their ancestors. The first undisputed recorded European sighting of the mainland of the Australian continent was made by the Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon, who sighted the coast in 1606. Then Abel Tasman visited an island
