Weather and climate

greeting. When the deep cold lasts long and heavy snow and blizzards give us the shivers we replace "funny" with something stronger, such as "terrible", "ghastly". At times like these people ask what is happening to the weather. So we go to the experts, who tell us in language appropriate to the subject, what happened yesterday, what is happening today, and what might happen in the next few years. Weather and climate specialists all over the world have collected a vast quantity of information. They can describe what is happening around us. With satellites they can forecast more accurately what might happen in the immediate future. Their research has produced evidence of why past climatic changes took place. There have been many climate fluctuations over the 10,000 years since Britain was last covered with an ice sheet

The climate in Estonia

day lasts only 6 hours. It is not completely dark at night from the beginning of May until the end of July. Estonia, on the coast of the Baltic Sea, is at the same latitude in Europe as central Sweden and the northern tip of Scotland. In North America, the middle latitude of Estonia passes through the Labrador peninsula and southern coast of Alaska. However, due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf Stream, the weather in Estonia is considerably milder than the continental climate characteristic of the same latitude. The temperature in the summer months (June September) is typically 15ºC...18ºC and in winter 4ºC...5ºC. Estonian weather offers many surprises. Temperatures may fluctuate by 20ºC. In the early morning the thermometer might read 12ºC and by afternoon it may already be 10ºC. Although it doestn't always snow in winter, there tends to be about 10cm of snow on the ground consistently from late December through to the beginning of March

Around £850 m is taken in revenue each year.London has the largest wheelchair accessible network in the world and, from the 3rd quarter of 2007, became more accessible to hearing and visually impaired passengers as audio-visual announcements were introduced. The distinctive red double-decker buses are internationally recognised, and are a trademark of London transport along with black cabs and the Tube. Climate London has a temperate marine climate, like much of the British Isles, so the city rarely sees extremely high or low temperatures. Summers are warm with average high temperatures of 19 °C - 24 °C and lows of11 °C - 14 °C, however, temperatures can exceed 25 °C on many days, and in almost every year they exceed 30 °C on some days. The record high temperature in London was recorded on the 10th August 2003 when 39 °C was recorded. Winters in London are chilly, but rarely

Estonian climate in winter-time.

Estonian climate in winter-time. In Estonia, winter climate is very variable. Some year, it could be very cold outside, but some year it could be so warm you may wear your autumn clothes in winter. Some year it could snow so much, that you can't even get out of the house, because there's too much snow in front of your door and some year it may not snow for at least half of the winter-time. But no worries, mostly the temperature may go below -30 and because of the cold, students are absent from schools.

other crops. The use of modern machinery and agricultural methods has helped make U.S. farms to be one of the most efficient in the world but it has also increased production costs. Many farmers who have been unable to meet these rising costs, have been forced to leave farming and sell their land. Since 1925, the number of farms has decreased to about 2 million. But at the same time, average farm size has increased about 30%. Climate The climate of the U.S.A differs greatly from one part of the country to another. It is colder in the north and warmer in the south. The main part of the country lies in the temperate and the subtropical belts. The south of Florida lies in the tropical belt and Alaska in the arctic belt. The mountain ranges in the west and in the east of the country prevent damp air from moving into inland. As there are no mountains running from east to west, cold polar air masses can move far to the south

The Murray River is the largest river of the country and it is 2,375 kilometres long, it rises in the Australian Alps and flows to the south-west. The waters of Murray flow through several lakes, such as Lake Alexandrina and The Coorong. Other Lakes are L.Eyre and L.Mackay. Climate The seasons in Australia are the opposite of ours. It has summer while we have winter and the other way round. Australia has 4 climate zones: temperate, subtropical, tropical, equatorial. The northern shores are very hot, cause being close to the equator and the northern part gets plenty of rain. The western coast is dry and barren. In most parts of Autralia rainfall is very low. Is global climate change man-made or not?

Essay. Is global climate change (global warming) man-made or not? Over the last hundred years the Earth has been warming. This warming is believed to lead to many issues such as increasing of nature disasters, weather changes and draught. All of these consequences could become a reason of economic decay in many countries, especially in some undeveloped countries. Therefore it is very important to find out who is guilty of the climate changing. Many people are confident that the reason of global warming is man made carbon dioxide. Over the last hundred years our society has been developing very fast: there has been built a huge amount of different factories, has been made so many inventions in all fields of human activity. Unfortunately only recently we have noticed that by making our life more comfortable and more enjoyable we destroy nature and cause appearance of ozone holes which are directly

British scouts take part in international scout meetings, which are held approximately every four years. The membership in this or that youth organization is not compulsory in Great Britain. But everyone can find the activity he likes most. Climate in Great Britain The British Isles which are surrounded by the ocean have an insular climate. There are 3 things that chiefly determine the climate of the United Kingdom: the position of the islands in the temperate belt; the fact that the prevailing winds blow from the west and south-west and the warm current -- the Gulf Stream that flows from the Gulf of Mexico along the western shores of England. It is calles Great because in some languages the word for Britain is the same as the word for Brittany, which is in France. The word 'Great' helps to distinguish the two: 'Grande Bretange' = Great Britain, 'Bretagne' = Brittany. Climate Britain has a variable climate. The weather changes so frequently that it is difficult to frecast. It is not unusual fo people to complain that the weathermen were wrong. Fortunately, as Britain does not experience extreme weather conditions, it is never very cold or very hot. The temperature rarely rises above 32°C in summer, or falls below -10°C in winter. Summers are generally cool, but due to global warming they are starting to get drier and hotter

Canada gained its independence from Britain in 1931. Position/area Canada is the second largest country in the world. Canada extends across the continent of North America, from Newfoundland to British Columbia. Over 5000 km of border separate Canada and the United States. Climate/Land The northern part of Canada has very long, cold winters. Over most of the rest of Canada the winter are longer and colder than in the United States. Only in the southern part and on the west coast is the climate as mild as in the western part of the United States. Towering mountains, crystal-clear lakes and green forests make Canada's far west a beautiful region. Fields of wheat and other grains cover Canada's vast prairies. Much of Canada is covered with forests. Western forests produce much timber. Much of Canada's soil is thin and rather poor. During the Ice Age almost all of Canada was covered with sheets of ice. The border with Canada is often called ,,the longest unguarded border in the world". The United States and Canada are good friends and they have very few problems in managing the border. The borded with Mexico is different. Immigrants are constantly crossing the border illegally. Every day about 2,000 of them are captured and sent back, but may others get through. The Greenhouse Effects

The Greenhouse Effect: Scientists are sure about the greenhouse effect. They know that greenhouse gases make the Earth warmer by trapping energy in the atmosphere. Climate Change: Climate is the long-term average of a region's weather events lumped together. For example, it's possible that a winter day in Buffalo, New York, could be sunny and mild, but the average weather the climate tells us that Buffalo's winters will mainly be cold and include snow and rain. Climate change represents a change in these long-term weather patterns. They can become warmer or colder. Annual amounts of rainfall or snowfall can increase or decrease. Global Warming: Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. A warmer Earth may lead to changes in rainfall patterns, a rise in sea level, and a wide range of impacts on plants, wildlife, and humans. When scientists talk about the issue of climate change, their

Weather in England Britain is an island country and the surrounding sea gives England a varied climate. The main influence on climate is close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, that's why the climate of England is classified as oceanic climate , with warm summers, cool winters and much rain throughout the year. As Britain have such a variable climate changing from day to day, it is difficult to know what weather will be on next day. In general there are warm summers and cool winters. Summers are cooler than those on the continent, but the winters are colder. Eastern parts are drier, cooler and less windy. Northern areas are generally cooler, wetter and have a smaller temperature range than southern areas. The highest temperature in England was 38.5 degrees at 10th August 2003. Retell Global Warming

The Earth's climate has been changing constantly over its history. Once, all climate change occurred naturally, but recently, people have also started altering the climate. We are sending more and more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The average global temperature has increased by about 0.5 °C over the past century. Scientist expect it to increase up to an additional 3 °C over the next on 100 years. People who are living in cold places may have a chance to grow new crops if the climate gets warmer. At the same time in some parts of the world, people won't be able to grow the food they need. Global warming will make the sea level higher because it'll make the glaciers melt. When water expands in the ocean, it takes up more space and the level of the seas rise. If global warming gets worse, some kinds of plants and animals will become extinct. So as a result we have to slow down the global warming.

Animals shrinking in the heat

In the next few decades, some types of mammals, fish, birds and plants are getting smaller and evolve into miniature versions of what they are today. This could force some creatures, that people eat, to become extinct, Dr David Bickford from the National University of Singapore reviewed research showing creatures from deer to tortoises, gulls, goshawks and even polar bears have already shrunk over the past 50 years. 'Because recent climate change may be faster than past historical changes in climate, many organisms may not respond or adapt quickly enough. The species that can adapt are the species that will be affected by potential declines in body size.' Researches say warmer and drier conditions have seen an increase in droughts which have shrunk some plants, and acidification of the ocean has affected the size of algae and plankton which are at the bottom of the food chain. Experimental research has also shown that for every degree Celsius of warming, plants of

Canada

Canada. Canada is a very large country. It is over 600,000 sq kilometers larger than the United States. Over 5,000 km of border separate Canada and the United States. Canada does not have nearly as many people as the United States, it has only a tenth as many. Its climate helps to explain why there are so few people in so big land. The northern part of Canada is called Eskimo land and there are very cold winters. Only in the southern part and the west coast is the climate as mild as in the western part of the United States. During the Ice Age almost all of Canada was covered time after time whit great sheets of ice. These sheets carried away much of Canada's soil to the United States.
