Vincenti noorem vend Theo töötas samuti alates 1873 Goupilis & Cies, aga temastki ei saanud onu Centi osaluse ülevõtjat, sest 1887, aasta enne onu Centi surma, ettevõte likvideeriti. Seejärel läks van Gogh tagasi Inglismaale, kus töötas asendusõpetajana internaatkoolis ja metodisti pastori abilisena, aga sama aasta jõuludeks oli ta juba Hollandis tagasi ja leidis endale esialgu koha Dordrechti raamatupoes.
