Literary analyses of Beowulf

"Swallowed him piecemeal: swiftly thus the lifeless corse was clean devoured" have more or less the same meaning in both parts of the phrase. Another interesting characteristic of Anglo-Saxon literature is the rarity of similes. There are altogether only five similes in the entire epic and one of them - "Streamed from his eyes fearful flashes, like flame to see" can be found in the extract. The text has some features of Christianity in it e.g. "From captive of hell" and "His heathen soul, -and hell received it". As the scribes were clergymen/ clergywomen they couldn't possibly write down anything pagan and therefore had to add some features of Christianity to it.

organisation. The land was now divided 23 big fields which were into long thin strips. Each family had a number of strips to plough. One of these fields was for spring crops, the other for autumn crops and the third was left to rest for a year. In each district there was a manor where people came to pay taxes. Each manor was ruled by a lord. That was the beginning of class system. Christianity: the partnership of Church and state Christianity certainly reached Britain before 4th century but no one knows the exact time. The Christianity was well spread in the Celtic areas. In 597 the pope send a monk called Augustine to Canterbury the capital of the king of Kent. He managed to make many ruling families to accept Christianity but he wasn't successful in spreading it among ordinary people. However the Celtic church was successful at it and Celtic bishops were also accepted in the Anglo Saxon areas

The Man of Law's Tale

Liis Einling 10a The Man of Law's Tale Once in Syria dwelt a company, which was known by their wares, what all were so good and exellent. They went to Rome one day and found an inn what suited for them best to sell their weres and rest. They stayed there and heard one day about emperor's daugher Constance who was very beautiful and humble woman who followed the rules of Christianity and was always faithful to God. When merchants went to Syria's sultan, and told him tales of beautiful Constance, Sultan fell in love and wanted to marry with her. But then came legal difficulties in his way. He had to be christened and all his vassals too. In all this, Constance was really sad because she did not wanted to marry with Sultan. Sultan's mother also was not happy when she became aware of Sultan's intending to renounce prescriptions of Alkoran.

Religion in Ireland

Religion in Ireland 2. Today I'm going to talk about Christianity in Ireland, Roman Catholic Church, Saint Patrick and Saint Patrick's day . 3. Christianity is and has been the largest religion in Ireland. Most churches are organised on an all-Ireland basis which includes both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Many people believe that St Patrick was the one responsible for bringing Christianity to Ireland. Although he made a major impact on Christian Ireland he certainly wasn't the first to arrive here. St. Palladius was the first Christian to arrive in Ireland. 4. The Roman Catholic Church in Ireland is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church. It is the largest Christian church in Ireland. This map is based on a reasearch made in 2011, that shows how many catholics are in The Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland

backround to adjust it for our pupils. One of the mentioned resources Margater Cooling´s book ,,Christianity through Art: A resource for teaching Religious Education through Art" seems to be a very useful source for RE teachers, who would like to use art as a method. Her book offers 24 large colour prints of a variety of works of art in different media (painting, sculpture, engraved glass, woven cloth, etc.), which have been chosen to reflect the global nature of Christianity. The resource can be used in RE to explore both learning about and learning from Christianity, and as part of spiritual, moral and cultural development(http://www.amazon.com/Christianity-Through-Art- Margaret-Cooling/dp/1851753826). Usage of the method This method helps pupils to understand Christian signs and symbols. It is a good opportunity for a teacher to enrich their teachings with the language of image. An important criterion in choosing an artistic work is complexity

cultures that developed in neighboring Mexico and the western United States. Still, more than two hundred years passed before Spain made any concerted effort to colonize the coastal regions Cabrillo claimed for the crown. Coastal winds and currents made the voyage north difficult, and Spanish captains failed to find safe harbors for their crafts. Baja California became the northwest limit of Spanish colonization, and even there, efforts to settle the area and bring native tribes to Christianity and European ways were halfhearted at best. Not until the Seven Years War (1756-1763) realigned European alliances and their colonial empires did Spain seriously attempt to assert control of Alta California. This was to be done through a combination of military forts (presidios) and mission churches overseen by Franciscan fathers led by Junípero Serra. In 1769, the first parties set north from Baja California, and the line of Spanish settlement

Anglo - Saxon

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is a collection of important early English history. Cædmon's Hymn from the 7th century is the oldest surviving written text in English. In all there are about 400 surviving manuscripts from the period. Religion The indigenous pre-Christian belief system of the Anglo-Saxons was a form of Germanic paganism and therefore closely related to the Old Norse religion, as well as other Germanic pre-Christian cultures. Christianity gradually replaced the indigenous religion of the Saxons in England around the 7th and 8th centuries. Christianity was introduced into Northumbria and Mercia by monks from Ireland, but the Synod of Whitby settled the choice for Roman Christianity. As the new clerics became the chroniclers, the old religion was partially lost before it was recorded. Despite these prohibitions, numerous elements of the pre-Christian culture of the Anglo-Saxon people survived the Christianisation process.

The Saxons & Vikings

Wessex had become the strongest. Wessex never again lost its supremacy. In 829 King Egbert was acknowledged by Kent, Mercia & Northumbria. This was the beginning of the united kingdom. King Egbert became 1st King of England. The clergy, royal warriors & officials supported the king's power. He granted them land and the right to collect dues from the peasants & hold judgement over them. Another important class developed the men of learning, came from the Christian Church. Nobody knows when christianity first reached Britain. Christianity came from 2 directions, Rome & Ireland. In 597 Pope Gregory the Great sent a group of missionaries under a monk Augustin to re-establish Christianity. Augustin went to Canterbury, the capital of Kent, where King Ethelbert had married Bertha, a Christian Frankish princess. Several ruling families accepted Christianity, but not ordinary people. Augustin became the first Archbishop of Canterbury in 601.

The hit singles are "Born This Way", "Judas", "The Edge of Glory", and "You and I". I think this is a really amazing album with some different forms of instrumentation which have not been used on her previous releases. Gaga is very good singer and her voice is different from most other singers, because her voice is awesome and loud. My favorite track is "Marry the night". The only negative thing I would say about the album is that the bad taste and mocking of Christianity. This CD gets better the more you listen to it. I would definitely recommend buying it.

Celtic Mythology / Keldi Mütoloogia

Celtic Mythology Celtic mythology is the mythology of Celtic polytheism, apparently the religion of the Iron Age Celts. Like other Iron Age Europeans, the early Celts maintained a polytheistic mythology and religious structure. Among Celts in close contact with Ancient Rome, such as the Gauls and Celtiberians, their mythology did not survive the Roman empire, their subsequent conversion to Christianity, and the loss of their Celtic languages. It is mostly through contemporary Roman and Christian sources that their mythology has been preserved. The Celts peoples who maintained either their political or linguistic identities (such as the Gaels and Brythonic tribes of Great Britain and Ireland) left vestigial remnants of their forebears' mythologies, put into written form during the Middle Ages. Though the Celtic world at its apex covered much of western and central Europe, it

Essay: Christmases in Estonia

Maarja Mägi 11B Christmas celebrations in Estonia In Estonia, Christmas time is considered to be the most important time of the year. In recent times, Christmases have grown to be more a commercial holiday. What is more, Estonian Christmas celebrations have been changed due to German cultural influences. Christmases in Estonia on the whole have two meanings: first one is to celebrate the birth of the Christ and secondly it marks the whole period of mid-winter festivities. In Estonia's folk tradition, Christmas (in Estonian "jõulud" is of ancient Scandinavian origin and has no connection with Christianity) was a time of year to celebrate the shortest day and longest night. At the same time, Christmas was the culmination of the late autumn celebrations. Christmas Eve and Christmas Night were the most sacred times of the season. Nowadays, Christmases ...

 Four out of every 10 Christians in the world will live in sub-Saharan Africa. These are among the global religious trends highlighted in new demographic projections by the Pew Research Center. The projections take into account the current size and geographic distribution of the world’s major religions, age differences, fertility and mortality rates, international migration and patterns in conversion. As of 2010, Christianity was by far the world’s largest religion, with an estimated 2.2 billion adherents, nearly a third (31%) of all 6.9 billion people on Earth. Islam was second, with 1.6 billion adherents, or 23% of the global population. If current demographic trends continue, however, Islam will nearly catch up by the middle of the 21st century. C. And were then overrun by the various Celtic tribes that begun in the 8th century B.C. The Celts introduced the tribal organization and an early form of agriculture before they were forced westwards to Cornwall, where the Celtic language still exists in different forms, by the Roman invasion begun in 43. AD. The Romans ruled Britain for over two hundred years and left behind three things of importance: their roads, the sights of important cities notably London, and the seeds of Christianity. The Latin way of life villas, arts, language and political organization all vanished, however after the invasions from Northern Europe by the Anglo-Saxons and Jutes from the 5th century onwards. These pagan peoples' were easily converted to Christianity and the preachers from Rome brought with them learning and civilization. Christianity was an important factor in enabling the various kingdoms created by the Nordic invaders to be united in the 9th century.

Comparison of Education in Britain and Estonia

However, students in Britain and Estonia finish secondary school at the same age because secondary school lasts 5 years in Britain instead of 3 like it is in Estonia. Altogether, compulsory school in Britain lasts 11 years which is 2 years more than in Estonia. Moreover, there are slight differences as for the compulsory subjects taught in the first three years of secondary school in Britain and Estonia. In Britain, more emphasis is placed on Religious Studies, including Christianity and other religions, Drama and Information Technology. While in the first half of secondary school all pupils must study the same subjects, in the second half of secondary level and especially in the Sixth Form, more options are available for the British students when compared to students in Estonia. In the Sixth Form, they only have to choose 3 compulsory subjects with a vast range of extra subjects offered by the school like Economics, Food Technology, Government and Politics,

Tolerance.

And hell is definitely not the place we would like to find ourselves. That points us to the fact that religious people are often persecuted and even the Bible says, that the life of a Christian is no picnic, you have to stand above mockery and the fact that you may be rejected from the society. Of course there are many people who think differently. The facts that Christians burned heretics, tortured thousands of innocent people until they confessed to something they did not do and that Christianity goes against science makes us difficult to be tolerant. Some of us may have a question: "Why should we be kind to them if they have done so much bad to us?" There are no us or they. We all have our good and bad sides. However evolution doesn't like tolerance. Tolerance means, that we will accept all abnormalities and freaks. It will corrupt our system and stop evolution in its tracks. Already human average IQ is falling due to too tolerant habitat for people.

Old Tallinn

Old Tallinn Old Town, a medieval walled city filled with old buildings and fortifications. The sheltered bay and the easily defended Toompea Hill made it a natural place to settle. Sometime about 1050 A.D. a fortress was built atop the hill, the first of many. In 1219 the Danes showed up as part of the Northern Crusade to subjugate the Baltics and convert the local pagans to Christianity whether they wanted to or not. The Danes improved the fortifications and expanded the town, which became part of the Hanseatic League, a trading organization of a hundred northern cities. The Danes sold Tallinn to the Livonan Order, a branch of the Teutonic Knights, in 1346. The Swedes came next in 1561. Tallinn weathered plague and the Great Northern War and became part of Russia in 1710. In 1918, Estonia declared independence from Russia and fought a bitter war against Bolshevik Russia.

Ireland

Ireland history The first known settlement in Ireland began around 8000 BC, when hunter-gathers arrived from continental Europe, probably via a land bridge. Few archaeological traces remain of this group, but their descendants and later Neolitchi arrivals, particularly from the Iberian Peninsula , were responsible for major Neolithic sites such as Newgrang. On the arrival of Saint Patrick and other Christian missionaries in the early to mid-5th century AD, Christianity began to subsume the indigenous Celtic religion, a process that was completed by the year 600. Irish Music The indigenous music of the island is termed Irish traditional music. It has remained vibrant through the 20th, and into the 21st century, despite globalizing cultural forces. In spite of emergration and a well-developed connection to music influences from Britain and the United States, Irish music has kept many of its traditional aspects and has itself influenced
