Pidgins, creoles and Standard English (English in South-East Asia and the Pacific)

language typically English English or North American English is considered "standard" for teaching purposes Differences between pidgins, creoles and standard language varieties  Pidgins and creoles are a simplified version of already existing languages:  Lexis drawn from the dominant language (reduplication)  Pronunciation: fewer sounds (simplification, conflation)  Grammar: few inflections, simple clause structure, assimilation, reduction etc Differences between pidgins, creoles and standard language varieties  Pidgins can only be learned as a second language, creoles have native speakers  Pidgins and creoles have low social prestige and are not promoted through the education system  Pidgins cannot become a standard language because they are often corrupted by improper grammar and additions from other languages, however some creoles can become standardized Final thoughts

Essay about NewZealand and Australia

The Aborigines who survived were put into reservations and church missions (which often have been like prison camps). So-called pacification by force culminated in the late 1880s, leading to a massive depopulation and extinction for some groups. By the 1940s almost all aborigines were missionized and assimilated into rural and urban Australian society as low-paid laborers with limited rights; many aborigine children were taken from their natural parents and given to foster parents to promote assimilation. Nowadays many Aborigines live in the desert area, there are estimated of 200 000 of them in all over Australia. They have begun to forget their traditions and heritage. Recent Australian laws have made it possible for the Aborigines to regain their land. This also has caused problems because they went back to their land and started living like they did centuries ago collecting berries and seeds, hunting kangaroos and other animals. Most

characteristic of Old English. Certain front vowels, /æ/ /e/ and /i/, in their short and long variants, were diphthongized when immediately followed by a velar /x/ or a cluster containing a velarized consonant and /l/ or /r/, as its first element. I-UMLAUT In linguistics, umlaut (from German "sound alteration") is a sound change in which a vowel is pronounced more like a following vowel or semivowel. (ö ü). Umlaut is a form of assimilation, the process by which one speech sound is altered to make it more like another adjacent sound. If a word has two vowels, one far back in the mouth and the other far forward, more effort is required to pronounce the word than if the vowels were closer together. Thus, one possible linguistic development is for these two vowels to be drawn closer together. The Germanic umlaut (more usually called i-umlaut or i-mutation) is a type of

and suggestions that backpackers successfully reorientate themselves to their origin society upon return (Noy & Cohen, 2005), the lifestyle travellers did not adjust to feelings of conflicting social norms and cultural confusion (Hottola, 2004) experienced when returning home. The perceived anomie and reverse cultural confusion that often prevents these lifestyle travellers from re-assimilating into their generating societies, however, is not mainly due to cultural assimilation of the varied values and behaviours of the indigenous communities they visit. It is instead more attributable to having blended over time the practices and ideologies of backpacker subculture into their own self-identities and value systems. Third, although participants commonly narrated their travel experiences as engendering cosmopolitanism, unlike descriptions of many backpackers, they did not leverage this

Kanada ühiskond ja kultuur/Society and Culture of Canada

The separatist movements in Quebec seeked independence from Canada for the province of Quebec. It spawned a variety of political parties, such as the Parti Québécois and the Bloc Québécois. There have also been terrorist organizations that used violence to promote independence for Quebec but their violent tactics were denounced by the Parti Québécois. Justifications for Quebec's sovereignty claim that the unique culture and French-speaking majority are threatened with assimilation by either the rest of Canada and that the best way to preserve language, identity and culture is via the creation of an independent political entity. Religious differences (given the Catholic majority in Québec), are also used to justify separation. The 1980 referendum took place on May 20 and the proposal was defeated by a 59% to 40 %. The 1995 Quebec referendum was launched by the Parti Québécois government of Jacques Parizeau. An eventful and complex

increasing numbers of Central European Jews, especially fleeing from the pogroms of the 1880s. In the first two decades of the twentieth century, immigrants were entering the USA at an average of three-quarters of a million a year. In 1900, the population was just over 75 million. This total had doubled by 1950. [3, p.35] Within one or two generations of arrival, most of these immigrant families had come to speak English, through a natural process of assimilation. Grandparents and grandchildren found themselves living in very different linguistic worlds. The result was a massive growth in mother-tongue use of English. [3, p.35] According to the 1990 census, the number of people (over five years of age) who spoke only English at home had grown to over 198 million - 86 per cent of the population. This figure increased to 215 million in the 2000 census. This is almost four times as many mother-tongue speakers as any other nation. [3, p. 36]

ASPECTS OF BRITISH HISTORY

than the king of France. In 1204, during the reign of King John, the French invaded and captured Normandy, and the Anglo-Norman nobles lost their lands there. This is when the Norman ruling class really began to mix with and marry the Saxons, and consider themselves English rather than French. During the Hundred Years’ War (1337–1453) the English Crown lost all its possessions in France. These losses led to further isolation of the Anglo- Normans from France and their complete assimilation. A Reading Passage Every schoolchild knows the story of Robin Hood, which grew out of Saxon hatred for Norman rule. He is a legendary folk hero. According to the legend, Robin Hood lived with his band of ‘merry men’ in Sherwood Forest near Nottingham as a criminal or ‘outlaw’. He stole from the rich (the Normans) and gave to the poor (the English), and he stood up for the weak against the powerful. His weapon was not the

The American Enlightenment is the intellectual thriving period in the United States in the midtolate 18th century (17151789), especially as it relates to American Revolution on the one hand and the European Enlightenment on the other. ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

It is apparent that “Socialist Realism” does not represent so much the method of art but a policy of art, meant to serve aims that were little connected with arts themselves. Some literary figures had greeted the Soviet regime: Johannes Vares-Barbarus 1 (1890-1946), the communist Premier of Estonia from June to August 1940, Johannes Semper, Juhan Sütise (1899-1945), Mart Raud (1903-1980) among others. The German invasion of Russia in June 1941 temporarily halted the Soviet assimilation. During the German occupation (1941-1944) creativity was constricted within the frame forced upon the nation by the war conditions. All the power in cultural matters was in the hands of the General Commissioner Karl Sigismund Litzmann (1893-1945); all German officers and the Estonian Local Government, headed by Dr. Hjalmar Mäe (1901-1978) were subordinated to him. Literary life became quite discreet. The poetry collection Mureliku suuga (With Troubled Mouth, 1942) by Marie
