She had a great influence on
Antoinette’s life and Antoinette often turned to her for advice. It
seems as Christophine introduced the world to her and also the
black culture of the Carribean, even though she told her that “this
isn’t for béké. Bad, bad trouble come when béké meddle with that” (béké-white
people).
I think she loved Antoinette as her own daughter so it was natural for her to help her
daughter however she could, even if it meant that she agreed to give Antionette potion
for her husband.

Christophine was different than other Jamaican blacks-the way she talked and dressed
was different and she was portrayed as kind of an outsider. She once was a slave, but
now, to her family, she was a very loyal servant. She was very helpful, concerned and
