Pandas are endangered species, threatened by continued habitat loss and by a very low
birthrate. The population boom in China created stress on the panda's habitat and it led to
hunting of wildlife, including pandas. Due to conservation efforts, in 2006, there were 40
panda reserves in China, compared to just 13 reserves two decades ago.
A program called ,,On the Trail of Giant Panda'' was launched in 2012 to allow
volunteers to work up close with the pandas cared for in captivity and help them adabt to
life in the wild. Then they can breed better, live longer and have healthier lives.
