Credit institutions are defined in the directive 1 relating to the taking up and
pursuit of the business of credit institutions as:
a) undertakings whose business is to receive deposits or other repayable funds
from the public and to grant credits for its own account; or

b) electronic money institutions within the meaning of Directive 2000/46/EC.
Later in this text we use data on monetary aggregates in different countries and
regions. The consolidated MFI balance sheet is used to calculate some key
monetary and credit variables, including monetary aggregates, which are
regularly monitored by Central Banks.
