Carving was done in three media: wood, bone, and stone. Arguably ta moko was another form of carving. set in the Baltic Kingdoms. He shows a very rich and leisurely portrayal of this Baltic world, providing many customs like the close relationship between lord and man in the war-band and others. All this encouraged the supposition that the unknown author of the poem was himself a bard of the ancient type portrayed within the poem (a lord's scoop). However, many people propose that the author could be Christian poet, perhaps a monk, versed not only in old native traditions, but also in the culture and literature of the Latin Church, and whose purpose of writing was highly moral. For example, the fate is a `providentia' and the monster Grendel is an embodiment of evil fighting against Christian militant. This contrast corresponds to the poem itself. The poet is looking back from his own Christian times to an old society with different customs and beliefs. The poem is set, as it is announced in the very first line: `in days gone by'

They allowed the French peole to keep their religion, civil law system and language. The British didn't want any French people to try to break away from Britain. From 1775 to 1784 many British came to Canada from American colonies. It was so because of the American Revolution. Americans were fighting for their independence from Britain. comparative methods. 3.Actors in CL The modern founding figure of comparative and anthropological jurisprudence was Sir Henry Maine, a British jurist and legal historian. In his 1861 work Ancient Law: Its Connection with the Early History of Society, and Its Relation to Modern Ideas, he set out his views on the development of legal institutions in primitive societies and engaged in a comparative discussion of Eastern and Western legal traditions. This work placed comparative law in its historical context and was widely read and influential. The first university course on the subject was established at the University of Oxford in 1869, with Maine taking up the position of professor Comparative law in the US was brought by a legal scholar fleeing persecution in Germany, Rudolf Schlesinger. The Pre-Raphaelites

THE PRE-RAPHAELITES The PRB was formed in 1848 in London and it was an association of painters, poets, critics, sculptors. It was founded by three Royal Academy students who wanted to brake free from the academic art and return to the moral and descriptive truthfulness that they felt was gone from art. (The Royal Academy of Arts is and institution with a purpose to promote the creation, enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate.). The founders were William Hunt, John Millais, Dante Rossetti. Because of the fact that they were all students they were also very young- the oldest one, Hunt, was 21. They were soon joined by William Rossetti(critic), James Collison(painter), Frederic Stephens (critic), Thomas Woolner(sculptor). The three youthful Pre-Raphaelites deliberately challenged the established view of art, drawing up a manifesto of their intentions and publishi...

In both cases, the claims of the exiled House of Stuart were marginal to other causes of war, but were an important propaganda point in Great Britain itself, as both James II and James Francis Edward were accused of allying with foreigners to force Catholicism on the British people. One of the first traditions that appear in the chapter is ropedancing. Ropedancers are Lilliputians who are seeking employment in the government, for the performance, as a competitive examination, the candidates dance on ropes, or "a slender white thread, extended about two foot, twelve inches from he ground" (73); whomever jumps the highest earns a position in office. He placed importance on simple preparation of fish. This style seemed to be forgotten during the 1st century CE when De re coquinaria was published with 470 recipes calling for heavy use of spices and herbs. The Romans employed Greek bakers to produce breads and imported cheeses from Sicily as the Sicilians had a reputation as the best cheese makers. The Romans reared goats for butchering, and grew artichokes and leeks. Middle Ages With culinary traditions from Rome and Athens, a cuisine developed in Sicily that some consider the first real Italian cuisine. Muslims invaded Sicily in the 9th century. The Arabs introduced spinach, almonds, rice and perhaps spaghetti. During the 12th century, a Norman king surveyed Sicily and saw people making long strings made from flour and water called atriya, which eventually became trii, a term still used for spaghetti in southern Italy. Normans also introduced casseroles, salt cod (baccalà) and stockfish

11. In which province is Scottish culture preserved? In 1910 an incredible 62,000 Scots emigrated to Canada. Tens of thousands of Scots men, women and children boarded ships to make the journey to Canada in the first half of the 20th century. Nova Scotia Gaelic is still spoken in Nova Scotia, hundreds of years after the first Scots settlement was founded.21st century Scots Canadians celebrate their Scots origins and share their traditions with people from around the world. Scots culture is not a museum piece; it is a living thing that grows and thrives as it is touched by other cultures and other traditions. In 2006, in the Canadian Census, 4.7 million Canadians reported that they were of Scottish origin. Today, there are almost as many Scots Canadians as there are people in the whole of Scotland. 12. five races: White, Black, Latino or Hispanic, Asian, and Indigenous or Native. Racism then, is the discrimination or prejudice of a person or group based on the racial group she or they belong to. It's not that simple, however. The term racism is actually used in many ways. Some refer to racism as white supremacism, the belief that the Caucasian race is superior to all other races. Others define racism as discrimination against a particular race's culture, beliefs or traditions. Racism might refer to the idea that a single race is somehow purer than other races, or that one race genetically exhibits dominance over others. Some believe that race can be a way to determine behavior and performance. Racism in Obama's life When Barack Obama became the first man of African descent to be elected president on Nov. 4, 2008, the world largely viewed it as a boon to race relations. raamatud ei kao veel niipea. Keegi ei suuda ennustada, millal e-raamatud tippu jõuavad või millised siis e-lugerid välja näevad. Keegi ei tea, kas paberkandjal raamat jääb püsima veel sajanditeks. SUMMARY When i was beginning to write this research, i was convinced that i know quite a lot about e- books and see where the majority of humanity is moving in this area. I thought that today's students are so related to technology, that they would not respect the old traditions anymore. It appears, however, that i overestimated my knowledge. Currently, e-books aren't that popular yet, but it seems that everything in today's digital world is achieving success extremely fast. However, it's not expected that the paper books will be disappearing any time soon. Of course, the book, that has been with the man kind for centuries and amused them, will not be giving up to something, that has only been existing for a few decades.

Relocation programs have taken hundreds of Indians to work in cities; thousands of others cling to the security of their reservations, hoping to gain education and assistance necessary to develop the resources of their lands and become self-sustaining. Generally, the Indians are still proud of their traditions and heritage, and many of them resist giving them up or allowing them to be submerged or corrupted by white civilization. But Indians generally also recognize that their standards of living must be raised. Without giving up their unique cultural heritage, they have organized into tribal councils to try to help the federal government settle on long-range programs of education, health services, vocational training, resource planning, and financial credit.

The Saxons & Vikings

The Saxons & Vikings Fragmentary knowledge of England in the 5th & 6th centuries comes from the British writer Gildas, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, saints' lives, poetry, archaelogical findings and place- name studies. British landlords ruled small, unstable kingdoms and continued some Roman traditions of governance. In the mid-5th cent, Vertigern, a British leader, hired Germanic mercenaries to help defend against peoples of the north (Picts & Scots). In the end they revolted & the process of invasion and settlement began. The first Saxon ,,kings" were Hengist & Horsa in Kent, Aelle in Sussex, Cerdic / Cynric in Wessex. So the first ,,English" became mainly from Northern Germany & Denmark. The resistance of the Celts was long. They were free at the time, not like other Roman provinces on the Continent. Around 500, the Britons seem to have won several victories. One of their leaders was Ambrosius Aurelianus and one of...

Renoir and impressionism A revolution was beginning in French painting. A number of young painters began to rebel against the traditions of Western painting and went directly to nature for their inspiration and into the actual society of which they were a part. As a result, their works revealed a look of freshness that in many ways departed from the look of Old Master painting. The new art displayed bright light and color instead of the solemn browns and blacks of previous painting. These qualities, among others, signaled the beginning of impressionist art.

public emphasis on the social importance of immigration. The 1960s Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism is often referred to as the origin of modern political awareness of multiculturalism. Canadians have used the term "multiculturalism" both descriptively (as a sociological fact) and prescriptively (as a political ideology). In the first sense "multiculturalism" is a description of the many different religious traditions and cultural influences that in their unity and coexistence in Canada make up Canadian culture. The nation consists of people from a multitude of racial, religious and cultural backgrounds and is open to cultural pluralism. Canada has experienced different waves of immigration since the nineteenth century, and by the 1980s almost 40 percent of the population were of neither British nor French origins (the two largest groups, and among the oldest)

printed word that, achieving cultural saturation in the eighteenth century, had homogenized the French nation. Frenchmen were the same kind of people from north to south. The typographic principles of uniformity, continuity, and lineality had overlaid the complexities of ancient feudal and oral society. The Revolution was carried out by the new literati and lawyers. In England, however, such was the power of the ancient oral traditions of common law, backed by the medieval institution of Parliament, that no uniformity or continuity of the new visual print culture could take complete hold. The result was that the most important event in English history has never taken place; namely, the English Revolution on the lines of the French Revolution. The American Revolution had no medieval legal institutions to discard or to root out, apart from monarchy. And many have held that the American Presidency has

In all societies, relations between people are regulated by prescriptive law out of which some are customs informal rules of social and moral behaviour. Breaking these rules may lead to penalties. Governments are motivated to make and enforce laws because of various reasons: social control, implementation of justice and common sense. Although making and enforcing laws is a way for government to show their power, they also combine many purposes and inherit many traditions. When governments make laws, they use a system of courts backed by the power of the police to enforce these laws. The laws made by the government of one country are often very different from the laws of another country and because of that it is difficult to write a general introductory book about law today. Laws are different in every country mostly because of the culture differences and historical background. Government - organization which controls a state or community

Catherine (from “Pride and prejudice”) and sir Walter Elliot (from “Persuasion) who both high-valued their positions. There were many similar problems in both books, like pride, which came with high position, an unequal class ranking and marriage without love. Jane Austen had her own style, she knew how to use irony exquisitely and to criticize delicately society’s problems - to laugh out, but at the same time stay true to the traditions. During the research process I was convinced of my earlier judgements, that Jane Austen has her own character - stereotypes and certain main message, which runs through of all her novels. Additionally, I developed my formalization and analysing skills. The biggest difficulties occurred with finding right estonian definitions for english explanations. I thank my research supervisor, who for the better understandment about the books, read both of the books herself.

But everyday life during the serfdom period, which in Estonia has been researched even less than the agrarian legislation, was still largely shaped by the patriarchal relations between landlords and peasants, founded on customs and traditions. The rapid growth of the Estonian population 4|Page in the 18th century has even been seen as a sign of the relatively tolerable circumstances of the region's peasantry. The deterioration in the peasants' circumstances was perhaps caused by general economic development rather than by their
