The warmer weather in summers causes a layer of permafrost, ice that never goes away in the ground, to melt, creating bogs and shallow lakes that don't drain. 8. What is snowline? A snow line is the point above which snow and ice cover the ground throughout the year. The actual snow line may seasonally be significantly lower. 9. What is treeline (timberline)? The treeline is the zone where conditions become too harsh to support growth as large as trees. When viewing a mountain from the side, this line is visible as the place where forests stop and snow, ice and rock begin. Sometimes there is a transition called the krumholtz line, where trees become stunted and warped before disappearing entirely as the altitude increases. 10. Name traditional human activities in tundra and polar desert areas.

relatively warm summers and cool winters, moderated by surrounding water bodies. These conditions are suitable to the development of mixed wood and broadleaf forests. Mineral Resources Mining and fuel extraction and production accounted for 4.5 percent of Canada's GDP or some US$36.1 billion. Fuel exploration and production dominate this sector, but the processing of other types of mineral resources has grown significantly. In 1996, the top non-fuel minerals were gold with production of US$2.05 billion, copper US$1.47 billion, nickel US$1.45 billion, and zinc US$1.25 billion. There was also significant production of lead and iron. There are about 50 major gold mines in Canada and the country leads the world in technologies which extract gold from rock and soil. The nation is the world's largest producer of zinc and the fifth largest producer of lead

land. In most cases, all mined land is also converted lakes and natural preserves. Waste is reduced by converting rubble into usable materials. Burnt brick waste is also recycled into a sub-base, which is used in civil development and infrastructure, such as roads. Apart from protecting the environment with some of the lowest levels of carbon emissions, the natural insulation properties of clay brick also contribute significantly to the life cycle of a building. Clay brick has the ability to absorb heat during the day and release it at night, thus reducing the need for artificial heating in winter and cooling in summer. So much so, that clay brick has become the preferred choice for many residential and commercial projects. Slide 15 Thank you for listening!

The difference in the wildlife make-up between New Guinea and the neighbouring islands is striking. /2/ Wildlife use and trade in New Guinea concerns several species that are in high demand either for local subsistence. As forests are opened up by logging and forest conversion for plantations, there is a risk that the scale of wildlife exploitation will increase significantly, with dramatic consequences for target species. /4/ The problem with trading wildlife Wildlife trade represents the second-biggest direct threat to species survival after habitat destruction. The most obvious problem associated with wildlife trade is that it can cause overexploitation to the point where the survival of a species hangs in balance. Historically, such

It took place separately in various Germanic languages starting around 450 or 500 Ad and affected all of the early languages[1] except Gothic.[2] An example of the resulting vowel alternation is the English plural foot ~ feet (from Germanic */fts/, pl. */ftiz/). ABLAUT In linguistics, the Indo-European ablaut is a system of apophony (regular vowel variations) in the Proto-Indo-European language. It has significantly influenced modern Indo-European languages. An example of ablaut in English is the strong verb sing, sang, sung and its related noun song. The term ablaut (German for "off-sound") was coined in the early nineteenth century by linguist Jacob Grimm. However, the phenomenon itself was first recorded more than 2000 years earlier by the Sanskrit grammarians and was codified by Pn ini in his Ashtadhyayi, where the

almost entirely meat. Inuit fished and hunted to get their food. Whales, walruses, seals, fish were staples of their diet. Clothing for Staying Warm Traditional Inuit clothing was made from animal skins and fur. Boots were also made from animal skins. Large, thick coats with big hoods called "parkas" were worn as an outer layer. Today the parka style of coat is worn in other places in the world and it is made of many other materials. Traditions Although Inuit life has changed significantly over the past century, many traditions continue. Traditional storytelling, mythology, and dancing remain important parts of the culture. Family and community are very important. The Inuktitut language is still spoken in many areas of the Arctic and is common on radio and in television programming. Changes to Inuit Life during the 20th Century Inuit a century ago lived very differently than Inuit today. Before the 1940s, Inuit had minimal contact with Europeans

It is used primarily in enthusiast and specialist circles. In recent American English usage, a car's fascia is its front-end "look" - grille, headlamps, front bumper, and other details. This area is possibly the most critical in defining a car's identifiable look, and is also the easiest to restyle when a car's styling needs to be refreshed (due to the fact that front end panels, grille, lights, etc. can be updated with different styling and fitted to the same chassis to significantly change the appearance rather than redesigning the entire body/chassis of the car). Again, this word is mostly used by the auto trade and automotive journalists. Furthermore, the fascia is used to describe the single panel that conceals the bumper, front or rear, and ties the bumper element visually with the sides of the vehicle--often including an inlet for cooling. 93% [citation needed] of fascias are made of TPO (thermoplastic olefin elastomer). This means that the peak memory usage is significantly reduced.  Symmetry Method represents symmetric markings and symmetric binding elements using equivalence classes. State spaces can be condensed by factoring out this symmetry, and the symmetry- condensed state space is typically orders of magnitude smaller than the full state space.  The equivalence method is a generalisation of the symmetry method, where the constraint that the equivalence relations are induced by symmetries is removed

different age groups. The differences in recall were among the schooled and non- schooled children, not the age. Children who had attended school in Liberia learned the lists of words just as rapidly as children in the US. The researchers took in consideration the cultural differences, thus developing lists of world relevant in that culture. When they analyzed the data, they found that illiterate children did not use strategies like chunking and that non-schooled children did not improve significantly in memorizing when they were older, but they did recall better if the words were presented in a narrative way, as a progressing story. It has also been found that Mayan children could easily recall objects if they were related in a meaningful way to the local scenery. Memory studies like these show that even though the ability to remember is universal, strategies for remembering are not. People learn to remember in ways that are relevant for their everyday lives.

Finland

GDP is predicted to grow by 4.4% in 2007, while 2008 is likely to show a slower rate of growth, estimated at 3.3%. Despite the current favorable outlook, there is a degree of uncertainty in the Finnish economy caused by the large fluctuations in electronics industry production, together with resource constraints. Cost and price pressures have increased, and there is a threat of industry's price competitiveness starting to weaken. Unemployment decreased significantly from 1994 to 7.7% in 2006 and is expected to drop to 6.7% in 2007. A relatively inflexible labor market and high employer-paid social security taxes hamper growth in employment. Labor bottlenecks are becoming more common in certain sectors, and this will increasingly restrict growth in output in the future. The main constraint to medium-term economic growth will be the drop in the population of working age once the post-war baby boomers reach retirement age.

The Relations Between The USA and Iraq

The Bush Administration faced heavy criticism from popular and official sources both inside and outside of the United States, many U.S. citizens found parallels with the Vietnam War. According to the Center for Public Integrity, the Bush administration made a total of 935 false statements between 2001 and 2003 about Iraq's possible threat to the United States. Both proponents and opponents of the invasion criticized the prosecution of the war effort along a number of other lines. Most significantly, critics have assaulted the U.S. and its allies for not devoting enough troops to the mission, not planning for post-invasion Iraq, and for allowing widespread human rights abuses. As the war progressed, critics also railed against the high human and financial costs. The financial cost of the war was more than £4.55 billion ($9 billion) to the U.K., and over $845 billion to the U.S., the total cost to the U.S. economy estimated at $3 trillion.

The United Kingdom The United Kingdom consists of England, Scotland, Wales and North Ireland and it is situated in the Atlantic Ocean near the mainland of Europe. The population of the UK is 58.6 million and area is 244,110 sq km. Britain has a temperate humid climate. Its characteristic features are mild winters, warm summer, no temperature extremes, abundant rain all year round and frequent changes of weather. The mild climate is partly due to the warm Gulf Stream and partly to the south westerly winds. Occasional winds from the east in winter may bring cold and dry weather. The distribution of rainfall is influenced by the Atlantic Stream. The mountainous areas of the north and west have more rain than the lowlands of the south and east. Wales is located on a peninsula in central-west Britain. The entire area of Wales is about 20,779 km². Wales borders by England to the e...

(e.g. geothermal and hydropower), others need additional development to become competitive without subsidies. This can be helped by improvements to sub-components, such as electric generators. The table shows an overview of costs of various renewable energy technologies. For comparison with the prices in the table, electricity production from a conventional coal-fired plant costs about 4¢/kWh. Though in some G8 nations the cost can be significantly higher at 7.88p (~15¢/kWh).Achieving further cost reductions as indicated in the table below requires further technology development, market deployment, an increase in production capacities to mass production levels, and of the establishment of an emissions trading scheme and/or carbon tax which would attribute a cost to each unit of carbon emitted; thus reflecting the true cost of energy production by fossil fuels which then could be used to lower the cost/kWh of these renewable energies.

Following these reforms, Russia's party system now definitely looks more similar to those in established democracies. New laws have significantly reduced the number of competing parties, and those that have remained, have considerable representation in national scale. Yet, there are several reasons to believe that the vision of more stable party system rests on the idea of creating a single ,,party of power" . The features of dominant party strategy Studies of dominant party regimes identify a number of common strategies which help to maintain the dominant party's power. For all its power, Silicon Valley has a great weakness: the paradise Shockley found in 1956 is now one giant parking lot. San Francisco and Berkeley are great, but they're forty miles away. Silicon Valley proper is soul-crushing suburban sprawl. It has fabulous weather, which makes it significantly better than the soul-crushing sprawl of most other American cities. But a competitor that managed to avoid sprawl would have real leverage. All a city needs is to be the kind of place the next traitorous eight look at and say "I want to stay here," and that would be enough to get the chain reaction started.

In the 2014 article, ,,Understanding the Internet of Things (IoT)" GSMA shares its vision of the evolution of The Internet of Things that will lead to the so-called Connected Life. The future of mobile connectivity goes beyond tablets and cars, allowing to connect virtually everything. It is assumed that there will be a significant rise of connected devices throughout the world, allowing the growth of new services, transforming the way people work and live. The lack of human interaction will probably cause the emergence of new business models and promote the delivery of services across diverse socio-economic sectors. A research by Machina Research predicts that the Internet of Things is likely to boost the economy by an enormous amount up to US$ 4.5 trillion yearly. The needs of variable industries are already met by the use of Machine to Machine (M2M) solutions using wireless networks. Being a relatively new sector, the M2M connecti...

Introduction of SCM

How do global supply chains achieve agility? In a sense the very process of globalisation has retarded agility. For example, many companies in 23 their search for lower production costs have moved much of their manufacturing and assembly offshore. The main driver for such moves often being low labour costs. However, in so doing they run the risk of extending their lead-times significantly thus generating the need for more inventory in the pipeline. As a result their agility is reduced. Some organisations have actually sought to reverse this trend by bringing manufacturing back closer to their main markets - Dell Computer being a case in point. Other companies are using low cost sources of supply to manufacture products where there is a predictable demand and using more local, flexible facilities for producing less predictable, more volatile products

Nuclear power plants produce no controlled air pollutants, such as sulphur and particulates, or greenhouse gases. The use of nuclear power in place of other energy sources helps to keep the air clean, preserve the Earth's climate, avoid ground-level ozone formation and prevent acid rain. Nuclear power has important implications for our national security. Inexpensive nuclear power, in combination with fuel cell technology, could significantly reduce our dependency on foreign oil. Nuclear power plants have experienced an admirable safety record. About 20% of electricity generated in the U.S. comes from nuclear power, and in the last forty years of this production, not one single fatality has occurred as a result of the operation of a civilian nuclear power plant in the United States. In addition, for those products with a longer life-cycle, we will continue to seek alternatives and reformulate products to decrease the amount of phthalates and artificial musks we use. We believe that this strategy has been effective. While customers have not noted a difference in the range and quality of our products, we have managed to significantly reduce the number of products containing phthalates and artificial musks. We have now set fixed timescales for elimination of these ingredients. By the end of 2006, phthalates will have been removed from all of our formulations. Likewise, artificial musks will be out of 95% of our formulations by this date. However, due to the complexity of replacing them in some of our most popular products, our deadline for phasing our artificial musks from all formulations is therefore 2010.

5. Different applications 5.1 Launch of spacecrafts into space from Earth Railguns can potentially launch satellites or space shuttles into the upper atmosphere, where auxiliary rockets would kick in. On bodies without an atmosphere, such as the moon, railguns could deliver projectiles to space without chemical propellant, which requires air to function. In 2003, Ian McNab outlined a plan to turn this idea into a realized technology. The accelerations involved are significantly stronger than human beings can handle. This system would only be used to launch sturdy materials, such as food, water, and fuel. Note that escape velocity under ideal circumstances (equator, mountain, heading east) is 10.735 km/s. The system would cost $528 a kg, compared with $20,000 a kg on the space shuttle. The railgun system McNab suggested would launch 500 tons per year, spread over approximately 2000 launches per year. 12

Russian authors have significantly contributed to numerous literary genres. Russia has five Nobel Prize in literature laureates. The work that was published during her lifetime was usually altered significantly by the publishers to fit the conventional poetic rules of the time. Dickinson's poems are unique for the era in which she wrote; they contain short lines, typically lack titles, and often utilize slant rhyme as well as unconventional capitalization and punctuation. Many of her poems deal with themes of death and immortality, two subjects which infused her letters to friends. inner ring, called bundle sheath cells, contain starch-rich chloroplasts lacking grana, which differ from those in mesophyll cells present as the outer ring. Hence, the chloroplasts are called dimorphic. This peculiar anatomy is called kranz anatomy, from the German word for wreath. The primary function of kranz anatomy is to provide a site in which CO2 can be concentrated around RuBisCO, thereby avoiding photorespiration. In order to maintain a significantly higher CO2 concentration in the bundle sheath compared to the mesophyll, the boundary layer of the kranz has a low conductance to CO2, a property that may be enhanced by the presence of suberin. Kranz-anatoomia. C4 taimede mesofüllirakkude ja pärjarakkude vahel on pidev tihe rakukest, millest läbi pääseb vaid plasmodesmide kaudu. Orgaanilise happed siiski difundeeruvad, sest nende kontsentratsio on 10 -20 mM

The Witch Trials in Salem

could make a witch cake and feed it to a dog. If the dog then behaved like the afflicted person it was proof that witchcraft was the cause. In this case a dog was given the cake and its behaviour afterwards was said to be like that of the afflicted girls. This was taken as evidence that witchcraft was indeed responsible. The girls then `identified' those responsible. They blamed three women, Tituba, the slave, Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne. Significantly all three women had low status. If the girls had accused respected members of the community they might not have been believed. Tituba was looked down 5 upon because she was only a slave. Sarah Good was poor and sometimes begged for food. Sarah Osborne had not been to church for a year. That earned her disapproval from many of her neighbours. On 29 February 1692 the three were arrested. On 1 March Judge John Hathorne and Judge

The Rise and Demise of the New Public Management, 28 10

The Rise and Demise of the New Public Management Wolfgang Drechsler (University of Tartu and Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia) © Copyright: Wolfgang Drechsler 2005 Within the public sphere, the most important reform movement of the last quarter of a century has been the New Public Management (NPM). It is of particular interest in the post-autistic economics (pae) context because NPM largely rests on the same ideology and epistemology as standard textbook economics (STE) is based (for my take on this, see Drechsler 2000), and it has had, and still has, similar results. Already more on the defensive within public administration (PA) than STE is within economics, NPM also shows that such major paradigm shifts in theory and policy may actually happen. In addition, it occasionally appears that pae-oriented scholars have overlooked the fact that some features in public management refo...

Business peciliarities in Ukraine and Bealrus

1994, and slow decline continued throughout the decade. Economic growth would not resume again until 2000. The budget deficit was, at 14.4 percent of GDP, exceptionally large. Barter and the use of surrogate moneys and foreign currencies prevailed. Ukraine had introduced a sovereign currency, the Hryvnia, but it was little used. A shadow economy swelled and compensated for an unknown share of the economic collapse. 2001-2008 Between 2001 and 2008, the Ukrainian economy picked up significantly. Many of Ukraine's large-scale capitalists--the oligarchs--are former Soviet-era industrial managers who succeeded on a grand scale when industries were privatized. Their wealth was originally based on a traditional, simple formula: convert cheap energy and raw materials into metals and manufactured goods. The six richest Ukrainians are all metallurgy magnates. In Ukraine--like in Russia--incumbent managers (there is a special term in Russian for such

ización» por ahora abarca tan sólo elementos lingüísticos y culturales, pero no los que aquí nos ocupan, que están directamente relacionados con el tipo de destinatario (MAYORAL 2001: 14) The author refers to the lack of audiovisual translation norms in different countries, since reading speeds "as done by Ivarsson (1992) and Screen Subtitling Systems Ltd. (1998), are usually established in WPM, while the word length can vary significantly for different languages, and the concept of `localization' only copes with linguistic and cultural elements for the time being, and is thus not dir- ectly related with the type of viewer". These comments are considered especially appropriate in order to answer some of the research questions in mind, like the re- lationship between CPS and WPM and their more than likely variation depending on the language the reading speed calculations are made for.

measure of stress however, many studies have failed to find changes in cortisol (Manuck et al, 1991), and there has been inconsistency in the effects of psychological stressors on cortisol activity (Biondi & Picardi, 1999). Despite these reports, Dikerson and Kemery (2004) in a meta-analysis of acute psychological stressors and various laboratory tests, did show variations in the cortisol response. The public speaking/cognitive task combination was associated with significantly greater cortisol responses than other types of psychological stressors. The combination of social- evaluative threat (being judged negatively by others when performing arithmetic or speaking task) and uncontrollability (time constriction and possible outcome) was the strongest predictor for the cortisol response. Detecting an association between repeated measures combining several time points, for cortisol the most widely used formulas are the area under the curve (AUCg

individual. The first sub-goal is to describe the temporal relationship between the diagnosis of VTE and malignant tumors in the patients of East-Tallinn Central Hospital. The second sub-goal is to describe various tumor localizations in patients with venous thromboembolism. The paper largely draws its statistics from the database of the hospital. For a coherent analysis several statistical methods were used. The results of the survey seem to confirm that patients with cancer are at significantly higher risk of developing, and dying from venous thromboembolism (VTE). This requires careful consideration of the interplay between the patient's cancer and treatment course, with their underlying comorbidities. Recognizing the increased risk for VTE in cancer patients is the first step in preventing the occurrence of VTE and promptly identifying VTE in these patients. Introducing the results of this study to the Estonian physician will help to raise awareness

What is integrated care?

2005); developing structures and processes to enable teams and/or organisations to work collaboratively towards common goals (Rosen and Ham, 2008); and/ or building leadership and management capacity to facilitate partnership(s) (Feachem and Sekhri, 2005). ·The interplay between different types of integration can influence the value that can be secured. For instance, integrating administrative processes can significantly aid integration of clinical services into a single process (Shortell, 2000). Similarly, simply focusing on organisational integration in an attempt to integrate providers is unlikely to create improvements in care for patients (Ramsey and Fulop, 2008) and can fail to alter the way in which doctors practise medicine and collaborate with other health care professionals (Burns and Pauly, 2002), which also requires

Kuidas muudab mudelprojekteerimine teraskonstruktsioonide valmistamist ja ehitamist

project breaks ground and problems start to rise (Powell, 2008). The geometric logics of fabrication and construction may introduce uncoordinated changes to the design intent of a 3D model created by the architect if not facilitated by an appropriate communication platform and protocol (Leicht & Messner, 2008). Virtual design essentially closes the gap between design and construction and significantly facilitates collaboration among design and construction teams (Mitchell, 2009). 1.11. Summary The main theme that emerged from the literature review of academic and industry publications is the importance of collaboration that is needed to facilitate the design and construction of a complex structure. Adopting BIM necessitates a closer form of collaboration (Eastman et al., 2008). The architectural firm has a two-way link in the collaboration

Games Programming with Java and Java 3D

Figure 5. Scene Graph for HelloUniverse Locale acts as the location in the virtual world where the scene subgraph is situated. In many programs there is only need for a single Locale, but it is possible to have many. Below the Locale node there are always two subgraphs the left branch is the content branch graph, holding program-specific content such as geometry, lighting, textures, and the background. The content-branch graph differs significantly from one application to another. 13 Games Programming with Java and Java 3D The right hand branch below Locale is the view branch graph and specifies the user's position, orientation, and perspective as they look into the virtual world from the physical world (e.g. from in front of a monitor). Metsatulekahjud Eestis

Mustvee Gümnaasium METSATULEKAHJUDE ÜLEVAADE EESTIS Uurimistöö Evelin Kütt 12. klass Juhendaja: Maili Vaher Mustvee, 2010/2011Sisukord Sissejuhatus Metsatulekahjud on oma õhusaastavuse tõttu ülemaailmne probleem. Sellega seonduvalt on hakatud rohkem investeerima metsatulekahjude enne...

the same IR wavelength. Although most IR phototransistors and LEDs will work together, these parts do operate at different peak wavelengths in the IR range. When using discrete parts, it is best to select an LED and phototran- sistor that are designed for the same IR range. If the parts have different ranges, then an LED at one end of its range and a phototransistor at the other end of its range may result in a system with significantly lower CTR. Figure 3.14 summarizes the three basic methods of interfacing an optical sensor to a microprocessor. All of these show the LED always on with a current Sensors 69 Figure 3.14 Interfacing optical sensors to a microprocessor. limiting resistor, and the phototransistor using a grounded emitter and a pullup on the collector.
