Day in my life

I went to the door and postman was standing there. She was holding a package. Finally my package has been delivered. I greeted him and went looking for my ID card. I ran back to the postman. She was writing down my info while my little brother was trying to talk with me. He was yelling: ,,What is this?" I answered him: ,,It's a package, obviously." My brother started laughing and ran away. Postman asked for a signature and suddenly my phone started ringing. I gave her the signature and crabed the package. I ran downstairs but the caller hanged up already. I started calling back but the phone was busy. Suddenly I heard ringing again. I ran upstairs to pick up the phone but my sister was already speaking with the caller, so I went back downstairs. After my sister finished the call, she told me that the package was for my mother.

placing pennies on a small shoulder of the clock's pendulum! The Hour Bell Big Ben - the hour bell - is said to have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall, Commissioner of Works, who was known for his bulk, as is the bell! The first Big Ben hour bell was complete before the tower, so the bell was hung in New Palace Yard. After repeated public ringing the bell cracked, and had to be replaced by the current bell. Facts and figures The hour bell of Big Ben is 8 feet in diameter, weighs 13.5 tons, and was cast in 1858 by George Mears of the Whitechapel Bell foundry. The bell had to be placed in a special wooden frame, turned on its side, and hoisted up the centre of the tower to the belfry

Belling The Cat (Inglisekeelne luuletus koos tõlkega)

run away. Indeed, something had to be done, for they lived in such constant fear of her claws that they hardly dared stir from their dens by night or day. Many plans were discussed, but none of them was thought good enough. At last a very young Mouse got up and said: "I have a plan that seems very simple, but I know it will be successful. All we have to do is to hang a bell about the Cat's neck. When we hear the bell ringing we will know immediately that our enemy is coming." All the Mice were much surprised that they had not thought of such a plan before. But in the midst of the rejoicing over their good fortune, an old Mouse arose and said: "I will say that the plan of the young Mouse is very good. But let me ask one question: Who will bell the Cat?" Westminster Today

Westminster Today For centuries, Westminster was the political and religious center, but today Westminster is the center of government. Westminster Hall was built in 1099 by the son of William the Conqueror and is one of the largest medieval halls. It was part of the Westminster Palace, which was destroyed by a fire in 1834. The Houses of Parliament that we see today were rebuilt in the 19th century after the fire. The Big Ben clock tower is the largest four-sided ringing clock in the world and it is also one of the London's most famous symbols. Some think that Big Ben is the name of the clock on the tower, but actually it is the name of the big 13-ton bell that rings every fifteen minutes. The most historic religious building in Britain is Westminster Abbey, a beautiful church across the street from the Houses of Parliament. It was begun between 1042 and 1065 when the English king Edward the Confessor built a church on the site where the abbey now stands

The Inchcape Rock

The sailors, obviously, do not hear the Bell (as it is in the bottom of the ocean). The current is very strong and it carries the floating ship with it. Then, suddenly the ship hits a rock and the understand they have found the Inchcape Rock. As the ship is sinking, Sir Ralph the Rover curses himself for removing the Bell from it's rightful position. "But even in his dying fear / One dreadful sound could the Rover hear, / A sound as if with the Inchcape Bell, / The Devil below was ringing his knell." The last stanza is written in a very powerful way. It says that at his dying hour, the Rover finally understands that he himself had signed his death sentence by removing the bell. The poem is filled with romanticist images and is quite literally understandable. But, if we consider that a ship was an ancient symbol for civilization, the poem acquires a wholly different dimension. Also, the contrast between society and nature then becomes very distinct. We are then

Japanese festivals

There are many variations of osechi, and some foods eaten in one region are not eaten in other places (or are even banned) on New Year's Day. Another popular dish is ozni (?), a soup with omochi (?) and other ingredients that differ based on various regions of Japan. Today, sashimi and sushi are often eaten, as well as non-Japanese foods. To let the overworked stomach rest, seven-herb rice soup (, nanakusa-gayu?) is prepared on the seventh day of January, a day known as jinjitsu (?). Bell ringing At midnight on December 31, Buddhist temples all over Japan ring their bells a 108 times to symbolize the 108 human sins in Buddhist belief, and to get rid of the 108 worldly desires regarding sense and feeling in every Japanese citizen. A major attraction is The Watched Night bell, in Tokyo. Japanese believe that the ringing of bells can rid off their sins during the previous year. Postcards The end of December and the beginning of January are the busiest times for the Japanese post offices

Translation history

Summary • Early history of translation studies – Cicero and St. Jerome (what did they do/how/why are they relevant to translation studies?) St. Jerome – Greek scholar, did some translation work. Lived during the 4th century. Jerome is best known as the translator of the Bible into Latin. A previous version (now called the Old Latin) existed, but Jerome's version far surpassed it in scholarship and in literary quality. Jerome was well versed in classical Latin (as well as Greek and Hebrew), but deliberately translated the Bible into the style of Latin that was actually spoken and written by the majority of persons in his own time. This kind of Latin is known as Vulgate Latin (meaning the Latin of the common people), and accordingly Jerome's translation is called the Vulgate. Cicero – Lived during the 1st century BC. Roman politician, philosopher & translator. Theory ‘‘word-for-word’’ & ‘‘sense-for-sen...

1) INDIAN ROCK ART: A NATIONAL TREASURE IN DANGER Unrecognized, unprotected, this priceless legacy of primitive art has endured the ravages of nature only to fall victim to wanton destruction by ,,civilized" man. Like the huge stone statues of Easter Island and prehistoric cave paintings of Altamira and Lascaux, North American Indian rock art is surrounded by an atmosphere of mystery. Although examples of rock art exist at some 15000 sites in canyons, deserts, caves and river gorges. Nowadays, however, primitive rock art in the United States has become a new field of scientific study. Klaus F Wellmann wrote two books about rock art. He is a professor of medicine. Rock art represents the history of aboriginal Americans. In the most cases the art is an expression of ideas and way of life, ritual ceremonies, hunting, fighting. The pictures of people and animals are often strikingly lifelike and artistic. Many of these ancient relics have ...

When accelerating a stepper up to a particular speed, the software may have to accelerate rapidly through these problem areas (Figure 7.6). This is particularly true if the acceleration ramp is fairly slow, which would otherwise cause the step rate to spend some time in the resonance area. Figure 7.5 Step motor ringing. Though normal speech ranges from about 70 to about 7,000 c.p.s., the telephone, for engineering reasons, responds only to sounds from about 300 to 3,300 c.p.s. It is this frequency band that is inverted. A voice tone of 300 c.p.s. will emerge from the inverter at 3,300 c.p.s., and vice versa. A tone of 750 c.p.s. will become 2,250 c.p.s., and again vice versa. It is the equivalent of a = z, b = Y.....z = A, a phonetic atbash. Inverted speech sounds like a thin high-pitched squawking, ringing with bell-like chimes. The word company resembles CRINKAN-OPE, Chicago, SIKAYBEE. The inversion pivots in the middle of the frequency band, which means that tones in this area somersault through a narrow range. A frequency of 1,625 will become 1,675. This relative lack of change results in the phenomenon that the word inverter itself, which is composed largely of such tones, emerges from the enciphering process that it describes almost unchanged! Another simple technique is the band-shift

It should scare you because these aren't side e ects of anabolic steroids. These are common side effects of aspirin. Some drugs are safer than others, but almost anything will kill you at a high enough dose. It's the dose that makes the poison.
