This brings up the following important notion of the effectiveness of torture. Witches in the middle ages are probably the best example to explain that torture does not lead to reliable confessions. By belief that people could be possessed by the devil, these people were heavily tortured until they admitted to it. A known example of this is how the suspect's arms and legs were tied and then thrown into the water. If the person sank, they were innocent. This was seen as god's judgment. Because of the conviction that witches were possessed by the devil, torture was justified. Because of it, nearly all admitted to being possessed and therefore also others were blamed of witchcraft
