SWEDISH FOOD

Saturday is candy day in Sweden, and most children indulge only once a week. Upheld mostly to protect people’s teeth and prevent dental cavities, the tradition is historically linked to dubious medical practices. In the 1940s and 1950s, at Vipeholm Mental Hospital in Lund patients were used in a series of human experiments for research purposes, and fed large amounts of candy to intentionally cause tooth decay. Based on its findings in 1957 of the direct relationship between sweets and tooth decay, the Medical Board suggested Swedes eat candy only once a week — a tradition that is still upheld in many households today.

R. Kipling & M. Faraday

He was born on 22 September 1791 in Newington Butts, now part of the London Borough of Southwark; but then a suburban part of Surrey, one mile south of London Bridge. Faraday studied the magnetic field around a conductor carrying a DC electric current, and established the basis for the electromagnetic field concept in physics. He discovered electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism, and laws of electrolysis. He established that magnetism could affect rays of light and that there was an underlying relationship between the two phenomena. His inventions of electromagnetic rotary devices formed the foundation of electric motor technology, and it was largely due to his efforts that electricity became viable for use in technology. As a chemist, Faraday discovered benzene, investigated the clathrate hydrate of chlorine, invented an early form of the bunsen burner and the system of oxidation numbers, and popularized terminology such as anode, cathode, electrode, and ion. Although Faraday

nitric acid. These acids then disperse over large areas because of wind patterns and fall back to the ground as acid rain or other forms of precipitation. The gases responsible for acid deposition are normally a byproduct of electric power generation and the burning of coal. As such, it began entering the atmosphere in large amounts during the Industrial Revolution and was first discovered by a Scottish chemist, Robert Angus Smith, in 1852. In that year, he discovered the relationship between acid rain and atmospheric pollution in Manchester, England. Although it was discovered in the 1800s, acid deposition did not gain significant public attention until the 1960s and the term acid rain was coined in 1972. Public attention further increased in the 1970s when the New York Times published reports about problems occurring in the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire. Effects of Acid Rain

Why do we need morality?

sees and judges all our actions. Law is related to morality as well as religion. In the perfect word morality should be the basis of law. But in real world there are unjust laws and immoral acts that cannot be legally enforced. The law cannot judge human motives and intentions as well and that is why the law is much more shallower. One can be morally evil, intending to do evil things, but as long as he won't do them, he is legally innocent. The relationship between morality and etiquette is that etiquette varies greatly in different cultures and is usually morally neutral. For example one culture eats with chop-sticks, other with forks and knives, but it does not make neither of them less moral.

new research that has been carried out by scientists at Cardiff University and in Sichuan in China. Previous findings have suggested that the serious decline in giant panda numbers in modern times is related to its unusual dietary requirements the species exists almost entirely on bamboo habitat isolation and relatively slow reproductive rate. But this new study, published in Molecular Biology and Evolution, has uncovered an important relationship between the species' decline and human activities. "It is clear that the species has suffered at the hands of human activities such as deforestation and poaching," said Professor Michael Bruford. The research also shows that where habit conservation projects have been properly implemented, the giant panda is flourishing and its numbers are increasing. "Our research suggests we have to revise our thinking about the evolutionary prospects for the giant panda and that the

The Middle Ages

He was the first king of the Tudor dynasty. Key events The Norman invasion King Edward of England died on January 5, 1066, after a reign of 23 years. Leaving no heirs, Edward's passing away ignited a three-way rivalry for the crown that culminated in the Battle of Hastings and the destruction of the Anglo-Saxon rule of England. The leading pretender was Harold Godwinson, Harold and Edward became brothers-in-law when the king married Harold's sister. Harold's powerful position, his relationship to Edward and his esteem among his peers made him a logical successor to the throne. William, Duke of Normandy, also laid claim to the English throne. William justified his claim through his blood relationship with Edward as they were distant cousins and by stating that some years earlier, Edward had designated him as his successor. The third rival for the throne was Harald Hardrada, King of Norway. Hardrada ruled Norway jointly with his nephew Mangus until 1047 when Mangus conveniently died.

In HCC you have to get to know your partner, build a relationship. In LCC meaning is made explicit and put into words. LCC tend to be task centered vs relationship-centered. polychronic vs monochronic cultures In polychronic cultures- many things are done at the same time, approach to deadline is flexible. In monochronic ones, one thing at a time, great stress on meeting deadlines and schedules Cyclical concept of time: Inspired by the daily and yearly routines of agricultural life. and global levels. Economic impacts can be divided into: Direct impacts – The economic indicators on direct impacts are designed to:  measure the monetary flows between the organisation and its key stakeholders; and  indicate how the organisation affects the economic circumstances of those stakeholders. The aspects for this section are organised around stakeholder groups. Each aspect includes a monetary flow indicator, which provides an indication of the scale of the relationship between reporting organisation and stakeholder. 8 For example, under suppliers, the monetary flow indicator associated with “cost of all goods, materials, and services purchased” provides information on the scale of flows between the reporting organisation and its suppliers. The performance indicator describes one facet of the economic relationship between the suppliers and the reporting organisation.

Logic helps us in constructing and evaluating arguments. How to recognize an argument? Generally a passage contains an argument if it attemps to prove something. It requires evidence presented (premise(s)) and a claim that is said to follow from the alleged evidence (conclusion). This inferential relationship might be explicit or implicit. The relationship between the premises and the conclusion might be explicitly expressed thanks to words that serve as indicators to distinguish the premises from the conclusion. within a cabinet formed of members of the House of Commons; the monarch was essentially removed from the loop. She respected and worked well with Lord Melbourne (Prime Minister in the early years of her reign) and England grew both socially and economically. On Feb 10th, 1840, only three years after taking the throne, Victoria took her first vow and married her cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Their relationship was one of great love and admiration. Together they bore nine children between 1840 and 1857 - four sons and five daughters: Victoria, Bertie, Alice, Alfred, Helena, Louise, Arthur, Leopold, and Beatrice. Most of her children married into other Royal families of Europe. Prince Albert replaced Melbourne as the dominant male influence in Victoria's life. Diana, Walesi printsess (The Princess of Wales)

for youth, until a skiing accident caused her to miss three months of work. She then found employment as a playgroup assistant, did some cleaning work for her sister Sarah and several of her friends, and worked as a hostess at parties. MARRIAGE Prince Charles had known Diana for several years, but he first took a serious interest in her as a potential bride during the summer of 1980, when they were guests at a country weekend, where she watched him play polo. The relationship developed as he invited her for a sailing weekend to Cowes, followed by an invitation to meet his family. There, Diana was well received by Queen Elizabeth II, by Prince Philip, and by the Queen Mother. The Prince proposed on 6 February 1981, and Diana accepted, but their engagement was kept secret for the next few weeks. Their engagement became official on the 24 th of February in 1981, after Diana selected a large ring consisting of 14 diamonds, similar to her mother's engagement ring

Questions for the First Philosophy Test

32. What does Kant say about metaphysics and religion? e. Hegel 33. What is the goal of Hegel's philosophy? His goal was to reduce reality to a more synthetic unity within the system of absolute idealism, to achieve the absolute. 34. For Hegel, what is the Absolute? The Absolute is, in principle, the relation between two different things, that ties these things together. 35. What kind of process is the Absolute? Understandable. If two things are opposed, it’s a relationship between them. 36. How would Hegel characterize the idea of Nature? Nature is no other than Spirit. Indeed it is the 'other' of the Spirit. 37. How would Hegel characterize the idea of God? God is only a very advanced form of thinking the totality. Yet God is only a limited symbol. 38. What is the connection between the Spirit and human reason? Spirit is a rationality that manifests itself in human reason. 39. What is the name of the method that Hegel uses to explain the activity of

A New Earth

Some economists are so attached to the notion of growth that they can’t let go of that word, so they refer to recession as a time of “negative growth.” A large part of many people’s lives is consumed by an obsessive preoccupation with things. This is why one of the ills of our times is object proliferation. When you can no feel the life that you are, you are likely to fill up your life with things. As a spiritual practice, I suggest that you investigate your relationship with the world of things through self-observation, and in particular, things that are designated with the word “my.” You need to be alert and honest to find out, for example, whether your sense of self-worth is bound up with things you possess. Do certain things induce a subtle feeling of importance or superiority? Does the lack of them make you feel inferior to others who have more than you? Do you casually mention things you own

English literature

The poem is one of the earliest and greatest monuments of the Germanic literatures. The main stories of the poem (the fights of B.) are versions of common folk-tales, but the poet also introduces many incidental stories, some of which belong to the world of ancient Germanic legend. He writes his folk-tales and legends in a web of other events, mainly set in the Baltic Kingdoms. He shows a very rich and leisurely portrayal of this Baltic world, providing many customs like the close relationship between lord and man in the war-band and others. All this encouraged the supposition that the unknown author of the poem was himself a bard of the ancient type portrayed within the poem (a lord's scoop). However, many people propose that the author could be Christian poet, perhaps a monk, versed not only in old native traditions, but also in the culture and literature of the Latin Church, and whose purpose of writing was highly moral. For example, the fate is

Psühholoogia bioloogiline-, kognitiivne- ja sotsiaalne vaade

A classic case of a prosopagnosia is presented by "Dr. P." in Oliver Sacks' 1985 book The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, though this is more properly considered "agnosia." Although Dr. P. could not recognize his wife from her face, he was able to recognize her by her voice. His recognition of pictures of his family and friends appeared to be based on highly specific features, such as his brother's square jaw and big teeth. Discuss the use of brain imaging technologies in investigating the relationship between biological factors and behavior. Though psychologists can learn a lot from brain imaging techniques, the technique is not without limitations. The MRI scanner is not a natural environment for cognition. There is a question in ecological validity. The use of colors in PET scans may exaggerate the different activities of the brain. Brain areas activate for various reasons (just because the amygdala lights up, doesn't mean that fear is necessarily part of the response being observed)

EU COOPERATION WITH RUSSIA AND EASTERN

1. Which are the main cornerstones of EU-Russia cooperation? Which have been the main developments and success stories in this partnership in 2000-2012? Which side is more interested? The main cornerstones of the EU and Russia relations are the trade and energy relations. One biggest breakthrough has been gas pipeline Nord Stream. Russia is the third biggest trade partner of the EU and is the main importer of gas and crude oil. The economic benefits are the biggest cornerstones of the relations. Cooperation between Russia and the European Union progressively strengthens in foreign policy and security issues, in combating illegal migration, organised crime and terrorism. The main achievement of recent years, which can be hardly overestimated, is the understanding increasingly gaining ground that partnership between Russia and the EU is one of the cornerstones of maintaining stability and prosperity not only in Europe, but world-wide. ...

Customs and behaviour patterns in Finland

to conduct business. The basic business style is formal - i.e. there is relatively little small talk and Finns prefer people to speak succinctly and to focus purely on business. Finns do not require face-to- face contact and, in fact, are quite comfortable using e- mail. Finns are excellent time managers who prefer to organize their workday in order to accomplish as much as possible. Finns are interested in long- term relationships. Relationship building often takes place outside the office: in a restaurant or the sauna. Never turn down an invitation to use the sauna, as it is an entrenched part of the Finnish culture. Finns place a great value on speaking plainly and openly. What someone says is accepted at face value and this is a culture where "a man's word is his bond" and will be treated as seriously as a written contract, so verbal commitments are considered agreements.
