The Magic of Living

Arabella had lived with her aunt and uncle since she had been orphaned at the age of five, and over the years had become accustomed to living in Hilary's shade. Hilary was the daughter of the house and as such expected and got-everything she wanted. Arabella could quite see that she could hardly expect to receive the same attention for herself. She was 22 and a trained children's nurse. It was only natural that her aunt should consider her capable of keeping an eye on the twins. In one day Arabella wanted to go to the doctor's house for tea and game of tennis, but her aunt's hints at lunch had been strong enough for her to scotch this idea. She had resigned herself to entertaining the twins. She spent time with the twins and suddenly she heard Hilary speaking with her. When Hilary called her Bella it meant that she wanted her to do something for her. And so it was. Hilary wanted Arabella to go to the trip with spastic children. Arabell...

A Modern Answer to the Commune

A Modern Answer to the Commune By: Penelope Green Johanna Bronk wants to make communal vegetarian meals and keep chickens. Mariel Berger hopes for social, artistic and political collaborations. Harmony Hazard is into hula hooping, book groups and anarchism. Oh, to be a young city-dweller in search of a house share. Finding a roommate has never been easy, but for some, the endeavor has lately assumed all the urgency, emotion and extreme specificity of shopping for a life partner. Last month, just in time for leases to turn over, the housing portion of Craigslist, the uber-community bulletin board and road map to the 20-something's psyche, featured dozens of impassioned tone poems, vivid personal biographies and ideological wish lists. Unfettered by space restrictions -- since Craigslist is free and space on the Internet is boundless, the word count of housing posts can stretch into the thousands, and some do -- and...

Reading task

Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief A film review by Bill Gibron The new Harry Potter wannabe, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, gets so many things right that when it goes astray (which happens with more and more frequency as it goes along) you kind of wish it hadn't tried in the first place. Unless your last name is Harryhausen, you shouldn't really maneuver Greek mythology, and you definitely don't need to use it as a source from some Shrek-inspired collection of tired pop culture riffs. Yet that's exactly what this Chris Columbus helmed half-success does. We begin by learning that the fabled gods of old do exist, and that Zeus is especially mad at brother Poseidon. Seems the head hocho's magical lightning bolt has been stolen, and each accuses the other of using the crime as a means of starting an all out Olympian war. Zeus specifically blames Poseidon's son, Percy Jackson, and soon, all th...

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/27/health/re search/27eye.html? pagewanted=1&_r=1&ref=technology A Burst of Technology, Helping the Blind to See Blindness first began creeping up on Barbara Campbell when she was a teenager, and by her late 30s, her eye disease had stolen what was left of her sight. Reliant on a talking computer for reading and a cane for navigating New York City, where she lives and works, Ms. Campbell, now 56, would have been thrilled to see something. Anything. Now, as part of a striking experiment, she can. So far, she can detect burners on her stove when making a grilled cheese, her mirror frame, and whether her computer monitor is on. She is beginning an intensive three-year research project involving electrodes surgically

Home-reading'' The summoning''

When the nurses left, Chloe noticed that they accidentally left Liz’s hoodie behind so she tried to contact her and it worked because Chloe already suspected that they killed Liz. At first when Chloe told Liz that she was dead, she didn’t believe her and left but later came back and accepted her fate. All the days when Chloe was in there she had only Liz for company. I liked this book because it made me very excited about reading more from other sequels. I would recommend it to those who like reading about things that are not of this world, like a little emotional strain and who over all enjoy reading.

A book worth reading

A book worth reading A year ago I managed to find time to read an extremely profound book entitled The Fault in Our Stars. This tragic, yet realistic drama was written by John Green, a famous author of young-adult fiction, and it provides a valuable insight into the life of children fighting with cancer. The Fault in Our Stars is about a teenage girl Hazel, who has stage 4 thyroid cancer. Hazel’s daily routine contains taking meds, reading books and taking part of the support group meetings for cancer- fighters. In the support group she meets an extraordinarily handsome boy Augustus, who, full of metaphores and mystery, catches Hazel’s attention immediately. As the plot evolves, these two spectacularily appalling figures get close and share unique experiences. Together they help out a friend dealing with the loss of a girlfriend, travel to the Netherlands to meet Hazel’s favourite author and much more

Is football better than reading?

reading? Gary Lineker said:" Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win.." Football is quite important for all of us. This is a game of emotions, where everyone can show, who they are supporting. This is a team sport, where all 11 players are involved on every play. Reading is an entertainment, by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul. Reading is also very educating. In my opinion, football is a thousand times better. Playing football improves a team spirit and It also helps to stay fit. So my choice is definitely football.

Reading a quality or a popular newspaper

Reading a quality or a popular newspaper There are two types of newspapers, one of them is quality papers and other are popular papers, tabloids. There are some differences between those two actually really unlike types of newspapers. Firstly, the main difference is in the content. From quality papers people can read about serious topics. This kind of papers contain inportant issues and reflect different political views. Also quality papers have financial and sports news. But from popular papers contain more sensational stories and scandals. Secondly, quite big difference is in the price and the looks between those two papers. Quality papers are printed on large pages, have an undramatic layout and very simple desing. Althoush they look serious their price is not very low. But on the other hand tabloids aim to excite the reader visually, using techniques such as very large headlines and photos. Those newspape...

Books Today and Tomorrow

Books Today and Tomorrow Why is it important to read books? Do people read less books than in the past? Will people read less in the future? Books have always played a great role in our lives and reading them is highly important. It increases knowledge and expands vocabulary, which integrates to writing. Reading books makes a person more intelligent and it gives a different perspective. Nowadays people tend to read less books than they used to. The main reason for this catastrophy is the development of technology. People would rather watch moving pictures in the television than pick up an old book covered in dust. In the past, when there were no

write or read TAB making it the most user friendly way to read and communicate guitar music. Also TAB relates directly to the fret board of your guitar meaning that you may easily see where you put your fingers. In the full version of Jamorama, both standard musical notation and tablature are used. But for this six day course we will only use TAB. The reason for this is that tablature is very easy to read and you should have no problems learning TAB in a few short minutes of reading. TAB has some weak points, the worst of which is that rhythm can't be easily indicated. This shouldn't pose a problem though, as I will indicate the rhythm for each exercise using the strum indicators that were introduced in lesson one. OK. To start I want you to look at your guitar and you will clearly see that it has six strings going from thickest to thinniest. On a TAB diagram, the thinnest string, (or 1st string as its most commonly called) is at the top - The

Why read? essay

Why read? Everybody has their own reasons for reading. Reading has been the main entertainment for centuries, although, nowadays people read less and less. It is probably due to the fact that in our modern world we have television and internet. Most of people are mainly reading for entertainment. They think that reading is a good way to spend their time and moreover, they find it also very useful. Secondly, in addition that reading is interesting it is also the best way to get information. We can read about other cultures or even learn languages from books. Reading widens our horizon and makes us wise. There are lots of reasons for reading. Every group such as students or grownups have their main reasons. Students read because they have obligatory literature. Some of them read beacause they want to get a good mark and some, however, truly like reading because they find it fascinating.

"The Printed Word will Never Die" essee

The Printed Word Will Never Die Books have been around for ages. People have used to aquire new knowledge and experience for a very long time which makes books the oldest source of new knowledge. For some youth, reading is a very hard thing to do, some just cannot pick up a book and start reading, most would rather hang out with friends or play computergames. Furthermore, some youth also prefer watching movies to reading, because a film is a lot easier to follow, reading a book is sometimes exhausting and tiring. But all that said, there is something about books, if a book is truly interesting, then something just forces you to read it, you read a page and you just have to know what comes next, what is going to happen, how will the story end. Page after page after page, until eventually without notice, you have finished the book. I think that reading can be a very enjoyable activity, but some people

What I Think of Homereading

I think that is very important for us to learn new words because if we hear them from news, tv, radio or read them from newspaper, magazine we know the meaning of the word. Knowing variety of words also shows our intelligence. Reading in foreign language is the one of the best ways to learn another language. For example, if someone goes to England or America they hear the language, but the words sound much different than they are written. That's why reading in another language is very important. The reader sees how the words are written. Also many new words are found in texts. It is not hard to translate them and find out what they mean. There are options in internet to see the meaning of the word, to see it in sentence and also translate it to another language. I think that knowing another language especially english is very important in today's world. One of the best ways to learn another language is by reading books. Not it is only fun and

The Internet is making literature irrelevant

The Internet is making literature increasingly irrelevant in the modern world Stanislav Stõkov MASB11 When computers were not so spread as they are today, and the Internet had not appeared in the lives of people, we used to spend much more time reading. Literature and books were our best friends, and one of the most important ways on entertainment. Nowadays, if you ask a person, when he or she has read last a book and what the book's title was, the person will not know what to answer. Nobody reads any more, or if they do it is on the internet and only a summary so as not to get tired too much. The Internet entertains superficially, as people do not gain too much by ''surfing'' it.

I really enjoyed reading this book, seeing events from different point of views was facinating and made reading interesting. I chose this book because of its interesting title. Native American government policy is a recurrent topic, especially because the Kashpaw family is (according to Nector) “respected as the last hereditary leaders of this tribe. Loss of a cultural identity and Native American spirituality characterizes and separates the two generations in Love Medicine: “They gave you worthless land to start with and then they chopped it out from under your feet

Review "THE CATCHER IN THE RYE"

We mature, we become adults, we revise our values and are feeling really unusual sometimes. Lots of times I have caught myself thinking that I'd already felt something like this before... Lots of moments in this book were really similar to some periods of my life and many relatives seemed very similar to characters of this book. "The Catcher in the Rye" certainly wouldn't be everyone's "cup of tea book", however I find it an exciting and captivating reading, with a variety of brutal reality poured in along with some humour, contrasting with moments of depression. For me it's quite difficult to rate this book. On the one hand, it is very strange and depressive. While reading it I was thinking and assuming myself being the heros of this book. All my thoughts were so sad and denudative. I was even thinking about what I am and what I am living for and is there any point for it. Serious influence, isn't it? On the other hand, this book gave me a lot

Today its aim is to collect and permanently preserve documents published in Estonia. 6. Children and books One key to children's reading success is making their reading experience entertaining, relaxing and enjoyable. Allowing them to choose their own reading materials give awareness of what their reading interests are. Some bookworms are even members of bookclubs. The language of the characters likewise occurs in a mix: the verse or poetry of the love-struck couples and the homespunand often humorous--prose of the bumbling tradesmen.Set in a magical forest, the play is all about match making and infidelity, mischief and romance. All of the characters are strong and have wonderful personalities.I would really recommend this book to anyone trying to get into Shakespeare or anybody fed up of reading books about modern London, and breaking-up families. Any student studying Shakespeare should read this as it is a nice book to start with and an easy way of getting to know Shakespeare. Books are not absolutely dead things

have been burnt and the writers been killed. That shows clearly, that books are not absolutely dead things. But I think that, no one should be killed or punished because of expressing their thoughts. If people criticise and say negative arguments about something, then it is clear, that something is wrong and must be changed. But we know that many of us do not endure criticism and therefore punish them, who actually want good. Definitely, one of the positive argument is, that reading of any book does not make us dumber. All books give you some kind of information and knowledge. They teach you, they may give you advice, they are like teachers and instructors. I believe that books have saved people's lives. For example, if you are desperate and thinking of ending your life, you can get consolation from book. It is like a good friend of yours, like psychologist. So, it also is an argument in favour of the "life" of books.

Hobbies contribute to one's personal development

play cards. Everything we do, gives us more experience at something, therefore hobbies contribute to our personal development a lot. The one hobby I will discuss and which is one of my own personal hobbies, is playing Texas Hold'em which is a form of poker. Although some people might just label it as gambling, poker is largely a skill game which has very little to do with luck rather than mathematics, reading people's body language and keeping track of people's previous behaviour. In able to play poker smart, you must be quick at calculating your odds and the value of your next move, just like in chess. Another very important skill is reading other people's reactions in the table, understand their body language, which often tells you exactly, which two cards they are holding. This can also used elsewhere, for example, some professional poker players can tell a lie from someone's

The First Years of the School: Reval Gymnasium

The First Years of the School: Reval Gymnasium In the beginning the school was upheld by the city of Tallinn and it’s knighthood. The school was meant for the sons of the noblemen and citizens. There were 4 professors and 2 colleagues. Students studied reading, writing, maths, theology, music, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, law, poetry, speech, geography, history and philosophy. Older students studied in Latin. Music was very important. There were four classes: quarta, tertia, secunda and prima, prima being the last and quarta the lowest grade. The head of school was a rector. For the first 15 years the rector was Heinrich Vulpius whose Gymnasium Laws (show the picture) were used for more than a century. The set of laws influenced the life of the students a lot. They designated how the students were supposed to act in the school and in their free time. (show the pic) For example the laws said that the students were supposed to concen...

Education

Nowadays students are quite lazy and do not want to study or go to school. They think it is boring and parents work really hard to make them study. Also, a lot of students think that the majority of the subjects they are learning are pointless. But actually none of those are pointless and every thing has a reason. In addition to that, if students could choose the subjects themselves, then some classes would be really empty. For example, a lot of students do not like maths or reading. Math develops logic and then we could imagine how many people would be without logical thinking. And reading books enriches vocabulary, so if people do not read books at all, their vocabulary would be quite small. On the other hand, learning different things like history and bilogy expand people's knowledge greatly. With learning so many different things one's brain and memory develops and that makes a person intelligent.

Theatre: Theatre as compared to film and literature

Also in books the feelings, thoughts and emotions are described better than in theatre performances. Secondly, in theatre performances you can only see one stage and one place but in movies the situations are depicted in various places, for example on streets and other places, which can not be depicted on a stage so easily. In addition to that, in books all the situations are decribed in very small details and that is a really big advantage of reading books. In movies and thatre all situations are generalized and short. In my opinion it is the best thing about books and because of that, i quite like reading. So in conclusion it can be said that theatre, movies and books all have their own pros that others do not have but also have cons. And because of that all those three have to exist and improve each other.

You are what you read

You are what you read. Dear audience, Form my topic I chose You are what you read. I chose this topic, because I kind of disargree with the it. Yes, it's true, that you recive knowlage from reading, and that designs your view of the world. For example if you read a book about UFOs, with different facts and examples, then you will probably start to believe in it too. However, if you read a book that says UFOs aren't real and explains what people have thougth to be UFOs, you have no choice but to argree with the statements. So yes, i think that, you are what you read, but you read what you choose to, whitch means that you are what you choose to be.

The picture of Dorian Gray

How could he? There is no way that a man could maintain a certain look for almost 20 years and not get older. After that, Dorian decides to get his life back on track, but the picture still gets older day by day. He gets frustrated and stabs a knife into the picture. That way Dorian Gray dies an awfully old man laying on the floor, a knife stabbed to his heart. But the man on the picture is young again. I think the book is good an excellent way of extending our vocabulary by reading. Two educational things combined. But it's also bad- it is a bad book choice for a first-time English reader. It is full with descriptions in such details, so many complexed word and expressions. Those made reading very complicated. Most of the time it wasn't reading, it was translating the words or googelling for the meanings of the fictional expressions. Adjectives are good, but when there are so many of them combined and in a foreign language..it made it painful. Also,

RESUME The aim of the research was to find out, what is the attitude of 11 graders from Valga Gymnasium, towards reading material. The questionnaire was answered by 25 students, 17 of them were female and 8 male. Student's age was 17-18 years old. The questionnaire was answered anonymously, in the Internet. From the student answers, we found out that in the 11. grade there is a small amount of people, who never read the summaries of the books. Most of the students fairly read them, but there is still a lot of those, who always read the summary.

Essay: online news and newspapers

and fast and ofcourse, when something important happens on another side of the world, people can read information about it after 5-10 minutes, not like with newspapers, where information is available on the next day morning. I can say that, not like others, I prefer old-fashioned newspapers, because of the feeling what reading them offers. For example: fresh newspaper, which smells good on the table, morning coffee, turning pages and reading pleasure. Newspaper is exclusive. Only chosen ones can in the newspapers, space is limited and stupid comments below the articles are missing. Instead of these are readers letters, jokes and some famous person´s opinion. There are no advertisements and you don´t have to click anywhere. People are talking a lot about diying newspapers. In 2009 Vockees Media Research made a research, where 293 USA newspapers died because of financial crisis. 230 of them were weekly newspapers.

The Picture of Dorian Gray / Dorian Gray portree

The third quite important charachter there is Lord Henry, a friend of both Dorian and Basil. He is a charming talker and a brilliant intellect. The climax occurs when Dorian kills Basil. He thinks that since Basil painted the portrait, that ruined Dorian's life, the painter should be punished for this. Evaluation I think that the writing was effective and definately the author achieved his purpose. Many people told me before reading this book, that they have never read a better book in their life. After first couple of chapters I thought we just have different tastes in books, as I usually do have, but the book was quite interesting in the end. Most of all I liked the plot, I think it was very well written and the author had good imagination. Also, the philosophy in this book was worth reading. Usually when you are in the middle of the book, you can predict what happens in the end. With this book it was different
