ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

1721 by the Treaty of Nystad. After the fall of Tsarist Russia in 1917, Estonians fought for their independence, and in 1918 the Republic of Estonia was established and endured until 1940. In the summer of that year the Soviet Union occupied all three Baltic states. As a result of the deep inner crisis within the Soviet Empire it became possible to re-establish the Estonian Republic in August 1991. A month later Estonia joined the United Nations. In 1997 the population reached 1.462 million; from this Estonians total 65% (950,124) and other nationalities 35%. The capital Tallinn, mentioned for the first time in 1154, has a population of 434,800 (1995). Other important towns are Tartu, Kohtla-Järve, Narva and Pärnu. Estonia is a developed industrial and agricultural country. In industrial output: oil shale, electrical energy, mineral fertilisers, paper, chemicals, building material, and textile production are prominent

The water in the bath was heated up to approximately 35 oC.(experiments without insulation) When the water reached the given temperature, which was measured using a calibrated thermometer, the valve of the rotameter was opened to set the intended flow rate of water through the coil. The water was left to flow through the coil with a constant flow rate and constant bath temperature, until the 14 inlet and outlet temperatures were constant, indicating that a steady state had been achieved.

In particular, expository passages, illustrations, explanations and conditional statements might serve or be re-expressed as to serve as arguments. Example: American Indians were called Indians because early European explorers thought they reached India when they actually discovered America. This passage might serve both as an e xplanation for those who already knew/accepted that American Indians were called Indians and as an argument for those who did not know/accept it. The 4 oldest Churches in Tallinn

The tower standing separate from the church was completed in 1364. The fire of 1433 claimed the St.Olaf's Church besides other buildings. It was consecrated for service again in a few years later, as well as decided to be reconstructed larger. The new church, whose construction required the demolition of the old nave and chapels, was completed as a three-nave basilica. The height of the central nave was 31 metres, the height of the stone tower 57 metres, while the spire, completed in 1450, reached the height of 159 metres. The St. Olaf's Church was the tallest building of the world at that time. The present late Gothic St. Mary's Chapel was built at the beginning of the 16 th century immediately before the Reformation, which also broke off its completion. The cenotaph of the warden of the church and a supporter of the chapel building, Hans Pawels, is built in the chapel wall, bearing the inscription: ''What I have given away,

and closing in on the 400 shot milestone before the rails give up due to use, which is an important part of introducing the weapon to basic military use. Unfortunately the Department of Defense has been moving away from the railgun project, leaning more towards a mixture of new and existing technologies because the electromagnetic railgun weapon system as it is now will likely never see combat in its current form. Although it has been proven that the railgun works, it hasn't reached the required 10 rounds a minute, being able to shoot about 4.8 rounds in one minute. It will probably take quite a while before research is far enough. Using a railgun as a railway for spacecrafts is also a long ways from being brought to fruition as the theory has been set but no practical headway has been made. Although science hasn't advanced enough yet to make full use of the theory behind railguns, the research has been

Knox was meeting at 10 a.m. that Sunday morning in the State Department with Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson and Secretary of State Cordell Hull to discuss the critical nature of the American negotiations with Japan, which, they knew from the previous 13 parts, had virtually reached an impasse. Kramer returned to his office about 10:20, where the translation of the message referring to the one o'clock delivery had arrived from S.I.S. while he was on his rounds. Its import crashed in upon him at once. It called for the rupture of Japan's negotiations with the United States by a certain deadline. The hour set for the Japanese ambassadors to deliver the notification—1 p.m. on a Sunday—was highly unusual. And, as Kramer had quickly

Latvian border (summary) The period following First World War was a revolutionary time for both Estonians and Latvians, when both nations created an independent state in its ethnic boundaries. The first challenge of the new relations between Estonia and Latvia was to agree on mutually accepted borderline between these states. The main issue in dispute about border was the ownership of the town of Valga. Various border committees haven't reached to any agreement. Initial boundary line was set by the pledge of neutral intermediary. This man was special representative of the British, Lieutenant-Colonel Stephen Georg Tallents. His decision was to give the main part of the Valga to Estonians. However, practically the whole Valga County, along with the neighborhood went to the Latvians. Dividing town and county, led to a myriad of changes to surrounding residents in their everyday lives. People

His successor as head of the Christian Democratic Party was Ruud Lubbers, who formed a new coalition in November 1982 and remained in power until 1994. During this period the island of Aruba reached an agreement with the government of the Netherlands separating the island from the Netherlands Antilles. Sewage was dumped right into the Thames. When tunnels and pipes were built to direct the sewage outside the city, outbreaks of diseases were drastically reduced. By the 1840's gas lights were being used to light streets all over London. The World's first Underground railway opened in 1862. At first carriages were pulled by steam trains. The system was electrified in 1890-1905. When Victoria died in 1901, after the longest reign in English history, the British Empire and British world power had reached their highest point The Twentieth Century London grew even more in the Twentieth Century. In the 1930's large numbers of Jews immigrated to London, fleeing persecution in Europe, and most of them settled in the East End. After World War II broke out many children were moved out of London. During World War II, London was bombed by the Luftwaffe. The bombings destroyed much of central London, including a part of St. Paul's Cathedral, although the cathedral suffered only minor damage

Most of the power dissipation in a diode occurs in the forward-biased on-state operation. Real poeration currents and voltages of power diodes are essentially restricted with power losses and the thermal effect of power dissipation. Therefore, in power devices cooling is very important. In the case of reverse biased voltage, only the small leakage current flows through the diode. This current is independent of the reverse voltage until the breakdown voltage is reached. After that, the diode voltage remains essentially constant while the current increases dramatically.Only the resistance of the external circuit limits the maximum value of current. 8)For power diodes, switching process is the most common operation mode. A power diode requires a finite time interval to switch over from the off-state to the on-state or vice versa. Switching properties are analyzed at a given rate of current change.

Hauling the net (traalnooda pardale võtmine) : Once the net has been pulled through the school of fish or after a given duration selected for the haul (according to the density of scattered fish within the water layer), hauling can begin. The hauling operation varies with the type of pair trawl gear in use. Most pair trawlers heave in all the warp which make at the same time that the two boats are gradually coming closer. When both warp ends have been reached, a heaving line is throw across and the bridles or wings ends from one of the vessel are attached to it for being transferred on board the vessel which will haul in the net itself. Raamatu ajalugu - kokkuvõte

Halfbound book with leather and marbled paper. Though papermaking in Europe had begun around the 11th century, up until the beginning of 16th century vellum and paper were produced congruent to one another, vellum being the more expensive and durable option. Printers or publishers would often issue the same publication on both materials, to cater to more than one market. Paper was first made in China, as early as 200 B.C., and reached Europe through Muslim territories. At first made of rags, the industrial revolution changed paper-making practices, allowing for paper to be made out of wood pulp. 14/15 Paper made from wood pulp became popular in the early 20th century, because it was cheaper than linen or abaca cloth-based papers. Pulp-based paper made books less expensive to the general public

On two huge stone tablets one can read some of Lincoln's important speeches. 13. History For thousands of years America was unknown to Europe. In 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered it while trying to reach India. He didn't stay and in the sixteenth century the first Europeans to settle in America were the Spanish, the English and the French. The first village founded by the English settlers was in Virginia in 1607. It was called Jamestown. In 1620 a new group of British settlers reached Plymouth, Massachusetts, called 'Pilgrims' due to their strong belief in religion. They became farmers and businessmen who coped with the Indians and in 1621 had a big dinner to thank the Indians as they had helped them to survive the hard winter. That day is now known as Thanksgiving and is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in America. More and more people arrived. Over a time settlers from many other countries joined the English in America the French, the Spaniards and the Dutch

Estonian holidays, festivals, cultural events

Holidays, Festivals, Cultural events TALLINN - If you're looking for entertainment in Estonia this summer, you are really spoiled for choice. Festivals and events dedicated to the consumption of beer are a lot of fun, but if you want to get the true feel of the country, you need something a little more ethnic. Like a town fair. Just as July becomes August, the seaside town of Haapsalu will host a grand spectacle of rural Estonian entertainment. The White Lady Days is a summer celebration filled with amusement for all the family. Held in and around the remains of the Teutonic-knights-era castles, the fair combines enchanting medieval legends with modern countryside charm to create a comprehensive experience of Estonia beyond the big cities. But the legend of the White Lady of Haapsalu, which is at the heart of the festival, is perhaps the most famous tall tale of the many that are so abundant in Estonia's folklore. It is the story of...

understanding of bonnes and muscles, herbs and drugs. By the 14th century, the medical profession's campaign against urban, educated women healers was virtually complete throughout Europe. Male doctors had won a clear monopol over the practice of medicine among the upper classes. They were ready to take on a key role in the elmination of the great mass of female healers the ,,witches." The partnership between Church, State and medical profession reached full bloom in the witch trials. The doctor was held up the medical ,,expert," giving an aura of science to the whole proceeding. He was asked to make judgements about whether certain women were witches and whether certain afflictions had been caused by witchcraft. In the witch-hunts, the Church explicitly legitimized the doctors' professionalism, denouncing non-professional healing as equivalent the heresy: ,,If a woman dare to cure without having studied she is a witch and must die

These shires, established by the end of the tenth century, have remained almost exactly the same for a thousand years. ‘Shire’ is the Saxon word which is now obsolete; it has been replaced with the Norman word county but still exists in the names of over 20 modern counties in England: Derbyshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, etc. Back to Europe Christianity reached Britain and Ireland well before it was accepted by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great in 313. In the fourth century Christianity became firmly established across Britain, both in Roman-controlled areas and beyond. However, the Anglo-Saxons were pagan when they came to Britain. In the seventh century England became Christian very quickly 4. Many bishops and monks in England were from Europe. They were invited by English rulers who wished to

Business peciliarities in Ukraine and Bealrus

In a nation of 46 million inhabitants, the pensions of 14 million pensioners grew from 9.2 percent of GDP in 2003 to almost 18 percent in 2009. This is one of the heaviest pension burdens 9 globally, and negative demographics will continue to worsen the situation if needed measures, like increasing the general pension age, are not taken. The end of cheap gas By the mid-2000s, Russia had reached several conclusions on energy and money that started to rock Ukraine's position. The much-needed energy efficiency demanded a huge change in the whole of economy and society--as in Ukraine--a process known in Russia as modernization. The first necessary condition for modernization was to raise domestic gas and consequently power prices. A roadmap for doing that was accepted in late 2006, and an evident conclusion emerged. If Russians had to pay more, there was no reason why Belarusians,

English as a Global Language

[1, p. 9] But international language dominance is not solely the result of military might. It may take a militarily powerful nation to establish a language, but it takes an economically powerful one to maintain and expand it. Economical developments of Britain and the USA, supported by the new communication technologies, fostered the emergence of massive multinational organasations, which brought an explosion of international marketing and advertising. The power of the press reached unprecedented levels, soon to be surpassed by the broadcasting media, with their ability to cross national boundaries with electromagnetic ease. And in modern times Swahili, Arabic, Spanish, French, English, Hindi, Portuguese and several other languages have developed a major international role as a lingua franca, in limited areas of the world. They often are called red men, or redskins, and they were named Indians because Columbus thought that he had reached the East Indies in his voyage across the Atlantic. Stone-age people who were to become American Indians began entering America at least 10,000 years ago. Most experts believe the first Indian ancestors arrived 30,000 or more years ago. Mary had neither genius nor taste; and though vanity had given her application, it had given her likewise a pedantic air and conceited manner, which would have injured a higher degree of excellence than she had reached. Elizabeth, easy and unaffected, had been listened to with much more pleasure, though not playing half so well; and Mary, at the end of a long concerto, was glad to purchase praise and gratitude by Scotch and Irish airs, at the request of her younger sisters, who, with some of the Lucases, and two or three officers, joined eagerly in dancing at one end of the room. Its 1:7 rise-to-span ratio resulted in an elegantly shallow, long-arch span widely adapted in other bridges of the Renaissance. The bridge was reconstructed using original stones recovered from the river following demolition during World War II. By the mid-18th century, masonry bridge building had reached its apogee. French engineer Jean- Rodolphe Perronet designed and built the Pont de Neuilly (1774), the Pont de Saint-Maxence (1785), and the Pont de la Concorde (1791), the latter completed when Perronet was eighty-three. Perronet's design goals were to slim down the piers and to stretch arches to the maximum. The Pont de la Concorde still represents the perfection of masonry arch construction, even though sceptical

Cats

The hair is silky-soft and shining and the colour is usually a light yellow (isabelline) or a dirty white yellow, although some have the usual colouring of the common house-cat. In size it considerably exceeds house-cats and is stronger. The ears hang completely, as with our hunting dogs and are large in relation to cats. Although the Chinese cat is found in considerable numbers in its homeland, it rarely arrives at European animal markets. Only one such cat has reached us in the flesh; we acquired this years ago when a sailor returning from China brought it into Hamburg. The accompanying illustration is based on this. In character it is like the Angora cat and somewhat inactive. It also prefer to live by a warm fire, is a little sensitive to attention, hears badly and is at its most animated when it sees the milk or food. Apart from its unusual ears, it does not have any really attractive characteristics and is a strange representative of the house cat.

analog input voltage. Higher input voltages will allow the integrator to charge to a higher voltage during the input time, taking longer to charge down to VREF2, and resulting in a higher count at the output. Lower input voltages result in a lower inte- grator output and a smaller count. A simpler integrating converter, the single-slope, runs the counter while charging up and stops counting when a reference voltage is reached (instead of charging for a specific time). However, the single-slope converter is affected by clock accuracy. The dual-slope design eliminates clock accuracy problems, Digital-to-Analog Converters 21 Figure 2.4 Dual-slope ADC. since the same clock is used for charging and incrementing the counter. Note that clock jitter or drift within a single conversion will affect accuracy.

PETROLEUM

Tallinn 2013 Ott Speek Subject: English Geodesy Study group: GI-21b PETROLEUM PRESENTATION Petroleum (L. petroleum, from Greek: Πέτρα (rock) + Latin: oleum (oil) is a naturally occurring flammable liquid consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights and other liquid organic compounds, that are found in geologic formations beneath the Earth's surface. The name Petroleum covers both naturally occurring unprocessed crude oils and petroleum products that are made up of refined crude oil. A fossil fuel, it is formed when large quantities of dead organisms, usually zooplankton and algae, are buried underneath sedimentary rock and undergo intense heat and pressure. Petroleum is recovered mostly through oil drilling. This comes after the studies of structural geology (at the reservoir scale), sedimentary basin analysis, reservoir characterization (mainly in terms of porosity and perme...

gold to slaves, as they looked for a route to India and its spices, which were coveted in Europe. The Treaty of Tordesillas, intended to resolve the dispute that had been created following the return of Christopher Columbus, was signed on 7 June 1494, and divided the newly discovered lands outside Europe between Portugal and Spain along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde islands (off the west coast of Africa). In 1498, Vasco da Gama reached India and brought economic prosperity to Portugal and its population of 1.7 million residents. In 1500, Pedro Álvares Cabral discovered Brazil and claimed it for Portugal. Ten years later, Afonso de Albuquerque conquered Goa in India, Ormuz in the Persian Strait, and Malacca, now a state in Malaysia. Thus, the Portuguese empire held dominion over commerce in the Indian Ocean and South Atlantic. The Portuguese sailors set out to reach Eastern Asia by

Kolme eesti poliitiku demagoogiavõtete kasutamine valimiseelsel perioodil ajalehe Postimees näitel

Niiles Kross and Andrus Ansip. The second hypothesis – more frequent usage of demagoguery results in a better outcome of the elections – also found confirmation, though it can not be said for sure, because there are other influential factors. Edgar Savisaar, who used demagoguery the most, also won the elections in Tallinn. Third hypothesis – the most frequent fallacy is argumentum ad hominem – found confirmation too. The goals of this research were reached and all of the set hypotheses were confirmed. Nendeks hüpoteesideks on:

to invade Ireland. However, the invasion of Ireland was not motivated by religion. The invasion force captured Wexford on the Norsemen. Despite the ongoing negotiations Dublin fell and the establishment of a small Anglo-Norman colony, known as The Pale, marks the start point of foreign rule over Ireland. Without too much of a fight all Irish kings gave in to Henry II. The Anglo-Norman authority outside the protected colony, The pale, was non- existent. Henry II reached an agreement with the Irish and they signed the Treaty of Windsor. By this Treaty Rory O'Connor became the monarch of all the unconquered areas of Ireland and in return he recognised King Henry II as his overlord and was due to pay him an annual tribute. A period of eight centuries of foreign oppression had began for the Irish. *Richard I and Minstrel Blondel There is a legend that when King Richard the Lionheart disappeared his favourite trobadure Blondel the Minstrel went to search for him
