Exports play a fundamental role in Ireland's growth, but the economy also benefits from the accompanying rise in consumer spending, construction, and business investment. On paper, the country is the largest exporter of software-related goods and services in the world. In fact, a lot of foreign software, and sometimes music, is filtered through the country to avail of Ireland's non-taxing of royalties from copyrighted goods. A key part of economic policy, since 1987, has been Social Partnership which is a neo- corporatist set of voluntary 'pay pacts' between the Government, employers and trades unions. These usually set agreed pay rises for three-year periods. Ireland joined in launching the Euro currency system in January 1999 (leaving behind the Irish pound) along with eleven other EU nations. The 1995 to 2000 period of high economic growth led many to call the country the Celtic Tiger. The economy felt the...

For many people, money is the most important thing in the world

Somehow money is important for all of us. We need it for everything: to buy food, clothes and other bare necessities. Also we buy other things and services that are less necessity, but we just want to buy them. Money is resource for buying things, is it also a purpose? Why are we studying? Because we want to get a good job, it means for one thing that we want to get big salary. We attempt to make career to get even bigger salary, even more money. We spend huge part of our life for earning money. It looks like this is the meaning of life. Fortunately there is also other things in the life, beside material values. Joy, friends, love we can not buy such things. It is good, otherwise we would only gather money. I believe ingenously that mental values are much more important than material values. But other story is, how to use this knowledge. For example I would like to be a millionaire. I can not say that money is unimportant for me....

Crime & Punishment

Crime & Punishment The fight between good and evil is as old as the humankind itself. Even in society there are always black sheep and these people are called 'criminals'. Although we are part of the EU and tend to be as humane as possible, we have to deal with the problem of growing numbers of people admitted to penitentiaries. One in all we have to dwelve into the mind of a criminal and find out what makes a felon tick. What forces an individual to commit crimes against others? Are we too humane and lenient? When looking for the reasons why people commit crimes I can only say what I believe to be...

London - climate, park and gardens

London is the capital of both England and the United Kingdom, and the largest metropolitan area in the European Union. An important settlement for two millennia, London's history goes back to its founding by the Romans. Since its foundation, London has been part of many movements and phenomena throughout history, including the English Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, and the Gothic Revival. The city's core, the ancient City of London, still retains its limited medieval boundaries; but since at least the 19th century, the name "London" has also referred to the whole metropolis that has developed around it. Today the bulk of this conurbation forms the London region of England and the Greater London administrative area, with its own elected mayor...

London - sillad, tornid, ajalugu

Above the viewing platform, at the very top of the Monument, there is a brass ball covered with brass flames. At the pedestal of the Monument there is a stone relief depicting Charles II dressed in Roman costume helping Londoners to rebuild their city. Barbican Centre The Barbican takes its name from the ancient fortifications that used to surround the City. (A barbican is a watchtower that hangs upon a gate.) It remained an upper-class part of town for much of the 17th-century, but by Victorian times the working class had taken over. Due to its proximity to the docks, it suffered plenty of punishing raids in the Blitz German bombs demolished a third of the buildings. When the armistice came in 1945 the area north of St. Paul's resembled a square mile of rubble. The high cost of reconstruction work delayed the diggers for a decade, and it wasn't completed until 1982. The resulting wash of concrete has...

Tallinn-topic

During World War II Estonia was occupied by both German and Russian invaders and Tallinn suffered heavily. The bombing of the city by the Soviet air force on 9 March 1944 left over 20,000 people homeless. During the Russian occupation which followed attempts were made to Russify the local people. Estonia re-established its independence on 20 August 1991. Toompea Toompea is the oldest and the most respectable part of the city. For centuries there was only one means of access to Toompea Pikk Jalg Street. In the middle of the 15th century the Lower Town fenced itself off with these walls from the Upper Town because of the permanent contradictions between the noblemen of Toompea and the citizens of Down Town. At the end of the street there used to be a wooden gate, in place of this a gate-tower was built at the end of the 14th century. At present Pikk Jalg Street is only for pedestrians....

How far can we go being tolerant?

To me, it is absolutely unacceptable because this is not normal. They could have good facilities for bringing up children and lots of love to give them, but in my eyes it just is not suitable for a child. How could a child live a normal life having to live with two mothers or two fathers? It may sound very intolerant and rude from my part , but I do not think any child could live like that and have a normal and healthy life afterwards. I try to be tolerant about gays having untraditional partnerships and think of them as fellow humans and let them live their own lives, but allowing them to raise children is over my line. Moreover, I am even more confused and concerned about the gender roles. A couple of days ago I saw Oprah talk show where there was a man Thomas, who was pregnant. He was born as a...

Pros and Cons of the Capital Punishment

cheapens human's life and government on the same low moral level as criminals who have taken life.` personally, I strongly support this idea. I think, that the government must be smarter and invent some kind of punishment, that would satisfy the wishes of the families and friends of murder victims and at the same time, this punishment should not be a crime. From my point of view, death penalty is the same crime like a simple murder, but it is legal, because the part of murderer plays the government. All in all, I am glad that in Estonia the capital punishment is abolished and I think. That it should be forbidden all over the world. Till then we need to think of another way of punishment criminals....

Estonians: What we’re really like

Estonians: What we're really like In my opinion Estonians are quite serious, we work hard and we're well-educated. We love to travel and a lot of people have a job or go to school somewhere outside Estonia. Ernest Hemingway once said that at least one Estonian can be found in every part of the world. Many of us have emigrated to the US, Canada or Australia. Some of them came back after the restauration of the independence in 1991. Estonia is a quite young country with painful history but I think we've been strong and kept our heads up. We may have a little country but it doesn't mean that the people are small too. The Estonians are more self-confident than you can ever imagine. We have many talented people, especially...
