"Anna Karenina" kokkuvõte

Stiva represents the worst aspects of the social world, since he hasn't earned his way through life. On his way out of the house, Stiva almost forgets to apologize to Dolly. When he does so, she becomes furious with him, humiliated by his pity. She realizes she wants his love but can never have it. It is important to note here that Dolly and Stiva are the product of an arranged, "French," marriage, in which romance was not a major element. Their marriage, modeled on those of 18th and 19th century France, was arranged to augment the families' social status. Russian nobility during this time often modeled their behavior after the French, who, they thought, lived a more stylish lifestyle. A man named Konstantin Levin arrives to see Stiva. This is the first appearance of one of the book's protagonists. It is easy to notice the contrast between Levin and Stiva. Stiva is the...

Irish history

A satellite picture of Ireland The history of Ireland began with the first known settlement in Ireland around 8000 BC, when hunter-gatherers arrived from Great Britain and continental Europe, probably via a land bridge. Few archaeological traces remain of this group, but their descendants and later Neolithic arrivals, particularly from the Iberian Peninsula, were responsible for major Neolithic sites such as Newgrange. Following the arrival of Saint Patrick and other Christian missionaries in the early to mid-5th century A.D., Christianity subsumed the indigenous pagan religion by the year 600. From around 800 A.D., more than a century of Viking invasions brought havoc upon the monastic culture and on the island's various regional dynasties, yet both of these institutions proved strong enough to survive and assimilate the invaders...

Cold war

He didn't care for people who didn't meet his expectations of the perfect race. In his eyes all other groups of people like the Russians, Jews and just crazy, crippled or diseased people were worthless and didn't have any other use than for slave work or just killing. b) After the war twenty-four major political and military leaders of Nazi Germany, indicted for aggressive war, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, were brought to trial before the British, French, Russian and American judges. More than 100 additional defendants, representing many sectors of German society, were tried in a series of 12 trials.Twelve prominent Nazis were sentenced to death. Most of the defendants admitted to the crimes of which they were accused, although most...

Sport Gaelic football, hurling and football are the most popular sports in Ireland.[19] Along with Camogie, Ladies' Gaelic football, handball and rounders, they make up the national sports of Ireland, collectively known as Gaelic Games. All GAA players, even at the highest level, are amateurs and receive no wages. Golf is a popular sport in Ireland and golf tourism is a major industry. Culture Literature and the arts For an island of relatively small population, Ireland has made a disproportionately large contribution to world literature in all its branches, mainly in English. Poetry in Irish represents the oldest vernacular poetry in Europe with the earliest examples dating from the 6th century; Jonathan Swift, still often called the foremost satirist in the English language, was wildly popular in his day and remains so in modern times...

Indians

When the Europeans came here, there were probably about 10 million Indians populating America north of present-day Mexico. And they had been living in America for quite some time. It is believed that the first Native Americans arrived during the last ice-age, approximately 20,000 - 30,000 years ago through a land-bridge across the Bering Sound, from northeastern Siberia into Alaska. The oldest documented Indian cultures in North America are Sandia (15000 BC), Clovis (12000 BC) and Folsom (8000 BC) Although it is believed that the Indians originated in Asia, few if any of them came from India. The name "Indian" was first applied to them by Christopher Columbus, who believed that the mainland and islands of America were part of the Indies, in Asia. So, when the Europeans started to arrive in the 16th- an...

Charles Darwin

Within a few decades, evolution through natural selection was a fundamental paradigm of biological thought. The development of biology through the century since that time has not essentially altered the situation. Alot of changes have been introduced, or at least debated. Once genetics was more fully understood, it was realized that major steps in specification might just owe more to favourable mutations than to the regular process of variation. But the introduction of mutation did not change the principle of natural selection. Natural selection, as Darwin saw it, simply can not be ignored. For just as a largely barren earth is re-colonized by the survivors descendants, which must adapt through either variation or mutation to fill the ecological niches left empty by the prior extinctions...

Naised vabadussõjas

Monumendi autor oli Rudolf Sõrmus. Avapidustused toimusid 20. juunil 1930. aastal. London Eye

It rotates at 26 cm per second so that one revolution takes about 30 minutes. The wheel does not usually stop to take on passengers: the rotation rate is so slow that they can walk on and off the moving capsules at ground level. However, it is stopped to allow disabled or elderly passengers time to embark and disembark safely. The project was European with major components coming from six countries: the steel was supplied from the UK and fabricated in The Netherlands by the Dutch company Hollandia, the cables came from Italy, the bearings came from Germany, the spindle and hub were cast in the Czech Republic, the capsules were made by Poma in France, and the electrical components came from the UK.
