Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge General · Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, England, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, which gives it its name. It has become an iconic symbol of London. Design · In the second half of the 19th century, increased commercial development in the East End of London led to a requirement for a new river crossing downstream of London Bridge. · Subway Committee was formed in 1876, chaired by Sir Albert Joseph Altman, to find a solution to the river crossing problem. It opened the design of the crossing to public competition. Over 50 designs were submitted. · Jones' engineer, Sir John Wolfe Barry, devised the idea of a bascule bridge 800 feet (244 m) in length with two towers each 213 feet (65 m) high, built on piers. The central span of 200 feet (61 m) between the towers was split into two

Kolm vaatlusväärsust inglismaal

No trip to London would be complete without a visit to the Tower of London. This famous historical site has been the living quarters of monarchs. It has been a site of imprisonment and execution of many traitors, clergymen, nobles and framed members of the royal court and was also an armory, treasury, zoo and mint. Today it houses the crown jewels and has a museum filled with armor, weapons and implements of torture. Another popular tourist sight is the London eye. Constructed by British Airways, it towers 135 meters above the banks of the Thames River. It is located near Big Ben and Westminster Abbey, on the opposite bank, adjacent to London's county hall. Views from the eye are spectacular and on a clear day most of London can be seen. If there's only one museum that can be seen, the British Museum is the one to visit. This museum has some of the largest collections on human culture and history. It is the home of the Rosetta Stone and has

Estuary English - A Controversial Issue?

Estuary English 1. The geographical dimension: Is `Estuary' English estuary? Estuary English is a dialect of English widely spoken in South East England, especially along the River Thames and its estuary. Phonetician John C. Wells defines Estuary English as "Standard English spoken with the accent of the southeast of England".[1] The name comes from the area around the Thames, particularly London, Kent, north Surrey and south Essex. The variety first came to public prominence in an article by DavidRosewarne in the Times Educational Supplement in October 1984. [2] Rosewarne argued that it may eventually replace RP (Received Pronunciation) in the south-east. Studies have indicated that Estuary English is not a single coherent form of English; rather, the reality behind

Great Britain

island in the world, after Java and Honsh. Great Britain is surrounded by over 1,000 smaller islands and islets. The island of Ireland lies to its west. The capital of England is London and its official language is English. The island was first inhabited by people who crossed over the land bridge from the European mainland. Traces of early humans have been found from about 500,000 years ago. Until about 10,000 years ago, Great Britain was joined to Ireland. When visiting the capital London a tourist should go sightseeing around the city. There are lots of attractions to look out. For example the famous Big Ben is a huge tourist magnet or The Eye as well, where people go and enjoy the view. Also many museums in London give tourists good information about England's history or art.

He had no language and lived entirely in his own world. 2.slaid At the age of five, Stephen was sent to Queensmill School in London, where it was noticed that the only pastime he enjoyed was drawing. It soon became apparent he communicated with the world through the language of drawing; first animals, then London buses, and finally buildings. The instructors at Queensmill School encouraged him to speak by temporarily taking away his art supplies so that he would be forced to ask for them. Stephen responded by making sounds and eventually uttered his first word - "paper." He learned to speak fully at the age of nine

INGLISMAA

ookean. Inglismaa kliima on väga muutlik. Vihma peetakse riigi sünonüümiks, kuna seda sajab kogu aasta suhteliselt ühtlaselt. Geograafiline asend eeldab madalat temperatuuri, kuid nii see pole. Atlandi ookean mahendab nende laiuskraadide külma. Inglismaa on Suurbritannia ajalooline osa. Pealinnas on palju mida vaadata. Alustades omapärastest punastest telefoniputkadest ning bussidest, lõpetades big beni ja vaaterattaga. Omalaadset London Bridge`i peetakse tuntuimaks sillaks maailmas. London on üks Euroopa suurimaid linnu, Rotterdami järel Euroopa suurim sadamalinn ning New Yorgi järel maailma tähtsaim rahandus- ja kaubanduskeskus.

About England

England The United Kingdom is very small compared with many other countries in the world. However there are only nine other countries with more people, and London is the world's seventh biggest city. When you travel about the country you can see how the scenery changes right in front of your eyes. Highlands turn into lowlands; forests and hills turn into meadows and plains very quickly. It's hard to believe, but in Great Britain one you can find practically any type of scenery. Britain is unusually beautiful country!

Buckingham Palace

and finally became the official residence of the British monarch in 1837 after Queen Victoria came to the throne. George III bought Buckingham House in 1761 for his wife Queen Charlotte to use as a comfortable family home close to St James's Palace, where many court functions were held. Buckingham House became known as the Queen's House, and 14 of George III's 15 children were born there. Buckingham Palace is not only the home of the Queen and Prince Philip but also the London residence of the Duke of York (Prince Andrew) and the Earl and Countess of Wessex (Prince Edward and his wife) and their daughter. Trafalgar Square

Napoleonic Wars. The original name was to have been "King William the Fourth's Square", but George Ledwell Taylor suggested the name "Trafalgar Square". The northern area of the square had been the site of the King's Mews since the time of Edward I, while the southern end was the original Charing Cross, where the Strand from the City met Whitehall, coming north from Westminster. As the midpoint between these twin cities, Charing Cross is to this day considered the heart of London, from which all distances are measured. In the 1820s the Prince Regent engaged the landscape architect John Nash to redevelop the area. Nash cleared the square as part of his Charing Cross Improvement Scheme. The present architecture of the square is due to Sir Charles Barry and was completed in 1845. Trafalgar Square is owned by the Queen in Right of the Crown, and managed by the Greater London Authority.[1]
