Swifts A Modest Proposal

analyze the use of satire in Jonathan Swift's most discussed pamphlet A Modest Proposal and the purposes of using this specific genre. The pamphlet reveals a vast number of social and religious problems: one of the major at those days was beggary. The satire was written in 1729, at the time, when economic situation of the country was extremely prejudiced by another crop failure. Thousands of poverty-stricken Irish were dying of starvation, causing the country's population to fall. However, despite the famine and constantly increasing number of deaths, the government did not implement measures to improve the existing situation. Thence, Swift, being an Irishman by birth and feeling disappointed of the ruling classes, proposes a solution to the problem by publishing his shocking work, the bitterest satire A Modest proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland from Being a Burden to Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Public (1729).

Using Blogs as a Platform in the TEFL

The primary purpose of this study is to collect evidence from numerous reviews of practices and summarize findings that will reflect on the ways in which social computing applications change learning patterns, give rise to new learning opportunities. This research project will sort out the best resources most suitable for the use in EFL classroom. It will firstly draw on diverse opinions, experiences, approaches on the use of communication technologies in a language classroom; however, it is also planned to try the method of using blogs in teaching writing in English and obtain statistical data of their language improvements by the end of training. As a feedback form I plan to initiate an electronic survey for everyone who pass the course. DEFINITION OF BLOG In recent decade on the internet scene appeared such term as `weblog', the later version of which had been simplified and is nowadays known as `blog'

Gymnasium over the period of ten years- from 1989 to 1998. In 1989 there were 380 students. The next year the number rose sharply, reaching 460. This was due to the fact that two nearby schools were closed and the students from these schools continued their studies in Simuvere. During the next four years the number was relatively stable. In 1995-1996 there was a slight rise caused by the baby boom in 1988-1989. In 1996 the number was greatest, there were nearly 500 students. However, when the local dairy closed in 1997, many families moved elsewhere and the number went down considerably. In 1998 there were 450 students. To sum up, it can be said that the number of students in Simuvere Gymnasium has changed over the years. In the next years the number will probably continue to decrease gradually as the population of Simuvere grows older. As there is high unemployment, young families will not settle in Simuvere. The Pilgrim Fathers

Had it not been for friendlier native Americans who taught them their skills, the Pilgrims might never have survived. The natives acted as guides through the forests and taught the colonists woodcraft, trapping, hunting, how to make maple sugar, moccasins and birch-bark canoes and how to raise crops of maize and tobacco. They also introduced the colonists to the turkey, which was native to North America. This aid, however, came too late for half the colonists, who died during their first punishing winter in Massachusetts, but the following year, the survivors showed they had learned their lessons well. In the autumn of 1621, they produced their first successful harvest and in gratitude, celebrated their first Thanksgiving . Thanksgiving became a national holiday in the United States in 1863, and has been observed on the fourth Tuesday in November ever since, with the turkey as a centrepiece of the festivities.

Presentation about Casey Brown´s Ted talk

we could use to help us. 4. slaid fear and doubts The main point of Casey's speech is that: No one will ever pay you what you're worth. They'll only ever pay you what they think you're worth, and you control their thinking. Casey Brown told two stories. One story was about herself reevaluating her pricing to her clients. She found that eventhough she was pricing consultant an expert, she had doubts and fears too. She claims that it is natural and normal however they don't define our value, and they shouldn't limit our earning potential. 5. slaid how to know your value She says that when you are valuing yourself you should ask key valuing questions: 1. What are my clients needs and how do I meet them? 2. What is my unique skill set that makes me better qualified to serve my clients? 3. What do I do that no one else does? 4. What problems do I solve for clients? 5. What value do I add? 6. slaid communicating your value

After graduation

I became interested in it after my brother had applied to the Estonian Aviation Academy. Unfortunately he did not make it and, of course, my desire to become an air traffic controller began to increase due to my brother's failure. I have never really had a real experience in aviation. Luckily, I had a chance to be a work shadow to a professional air traffic controller to see how it all works. This experience seemed long, however it was interesting and really opened my eyes. At first I thought that controlling air traffic can not be that hard, that it is just like another computer game! Well, during those two hours, while I sat next to my work shadow, I learned how much logic, brainwork and thinking it really requires. I also had an image in my head of how the job would probably be boring due to just sitting alone in a big room filled with computers. However, I was mislead and realized that it is just the opposite

Speech on Fast developing technology

Whether we like it or not, it improves in every second, in every minute. New Apple iPhones, iPads and other i-devices are everywhere. Even tractors have a built-in computer in them. So, is it a blessing or a curse? I'm sure that most of you think it's a blessing. Do you? We like our comfortable lives, we like it when everything has been done for us already. We want to have the newest mobile phones and best cars to show off and be better than our friends. However, it can make people selfish and egoistic. They want more and more and more. In the past 10 years modern technology has improved so fast that it is clearly visible when we compare technology in the years 2002 and 2012. When I was a little boy, I remember the time when I got my first mobile phone. It was Nokia 3310 (I can bet my life on it, that everyone in this class knows what Nokia 3310 looks like). It is thick and heavy as a

Harry Burwell Benjamin organized a militia to keep the British in the south until French Navy arrived to assist. To combat the militia Tavington had to pursue more brutal tactics to draw Martin out. So he tracked Martin's family to their refuge with Charlotte and burnt down her plantation. However, the family escaped, and were led to a safe haven by Gabriel and Martin. Gabriel got to marry Anne Howard. Soon after the marriage, returning home, Anne and her family, along with all the townspeople, were burnt alive whilst locked in the church. The orders for this came from Tavington. After furious Gabriel discovered what had happened, he with a small group of men and the Dragoons had a fight and during this, many men on both sides

several minerals, Finland depends on imports of raw materials, energy, and some components for manufactured goods. Because of the climate, agricultural development is limited to maintaining selfsufficiency in basic products. Forestry, an important export earner, provides a secondary occupation for the rural population. Finland had been one of the best performing economies within the EU in recent years and its banks and financial markets avoided the worst of global financial crisis. However, the world slowdown hit exports and domestic demand hard in 2009, with Finland experiencing one of the deepest contractions in the euro zone. A recovery of exports, domestic trade, and household consumption stimulated economic growth in 2010. The recession left a deep mark on general government finances and the debt ratio, turning previously strong budget surpluses into deficits. In addition to marginal growth prospects, general government

Fiji

Fiji's nearest neighbour is Tonga. The climate in Fiji is tropical and warm most of the year round. Fiji's culture is a rich mosaic of indigenous, Indian, Chinese and European traditions, comprising social polity, language, food (based mainly from the sea, casava, dalo & other vegetables), costume, belief systems, architecture, arts, craft, music, dance and sports. The indigenous culture is very much active and living, and is a part of everyday life for the majority of the population. However, it has evolved with the introduction of old cultures like the Indian and Chinese ones, as well as a large influence from Europe, and from various Pacific neighbors of Fiji, mainly the Tongan,Rotuman and Samoan. The culture of Fiji has created a unique communal and national identity. Politics of Fiji normally take place in the framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister of Fiji is the head of government, the President the head of

Legends of Tallinn

Reh Fall (roe-deer falling). According to the legends, Tallinn is a city which is never ready. Indeed, once each autumn goes dark at midnight, one small gray man from the Ülemiste lake. He goes to the city gates and asks from the gate guard if the city is completed or is it still in the middle of the building process. Because of that the guard has to answer that the city is not completed jet and the constructions are still going on. Then the old man goes away. If, however, answered him by mistake, that the city is ready, then Ülemiste lake floats Tallinn with its water. Formerly, there was a cloister on the Vene street, what was burnt down. Old dungeons are preserved even nowadays. When the building was redecorated, then there were found many humanbones. It is believed that the owner of the Mathiesen print shop had trouble with ghost, who made the printing machines work in the middle of night

It can be entertaining and educational, and can open up new worlds for kids, giving them a chance to travel the globe, learn about different cultures. However spending time watching TV can take time away from healthy activities like active play outside with friends, eating dinner together as a family, or reading. History of Football

practically no rule book, matches often descended into riotous scenes. Indeed, so violent was medieval football that the Lord Mayor of London actually banned the sport in 1314, claiming `there is great noise in the city caused by hustling over large footballs in the fields of the public'. The extent of its popularity and rambunctiousness is reflected in the fact there were more than 30 royal and local laws which attempted to ban football between 1314 and 1667. However, by the end of the 14th century, the term `football' was well established in England, with Chaucer even referencing it in his Canterbury Tales. It was by no means solely confined to the lower orders either, as the Great Wardrobe of Henry VIII in 1526 recorded `one leather pair (of shoes) for football', and decrees around 1555 were required to ban football at the colleges of Cambridge and Oxford University. Football was also prevalent beyond English borders, with the game first

Essay on water pollution, global warming, acid rain, deforestation, intensive farming

Some scientists concluded that human production was primarily responsible, while others cited natural causes as well. Recently, more intensive research has been done so that countries have the information they need to prevent acid rain and its dangerous effects. The levels of acid rain vary from region to region. In Third World nations without pollution restrictions, acid rain tends to be very high. In EasternEurope, China, and the Soviet Union, acid rain levels have also risen greatly. However, because acid rain can move about so easily, the problem is definitely a global one. Global warming Global warming, also known as the greenhouse effect, immediately received international attention. Scientists, environmentalists, and governments around the world took an interest in the subject. Global warming is called the greenhouse effect because the gases that are gathering above the earth make the planet comparable to a greenhouse. By trapping heat near the surface of the earth, the

The Renaissance

The printing of books led to a new way of thinking. Scholars of the Renaissance returned to the writings of Greek and Roman philosophers. These writings are called the "classics". More and more scholars learned to read Greek and Latin and studied old manuscripts on topics like science, art and life.During the Middle Ages people were guided by the church, which was against wealth, trading goods and other worldly interests. Humanists, however, did not believe that much in religion. They thought that money and trade were important in life and that citizens needed a good general education. During the Renaissance a churchman named Martin Luther changed Christianity. In 1517 he wrote a list of things that he didn't like about the church and posted them on the door of his church in Wittenberg, Germany. Luther also wanted the church to hold masses in German instead of Latin so that people could understand them better. Many other

Passive houses

As you noticed I mostly mentioned only the problems that may come with building a passive house, and that´s because you probably already know the positives the environmental, social benefits and over time a definite financial win. So unfortunately due to lack of time, I won´t be going over them more properly. In conclusion it can be said, that building a passive house isn´t affordable for everyone, so most of people just choose an easier path and focuse on today rather than the future. However, if we have now considered all the the negatives, it leaves us with a simple question despite the cons do we want to live in a sustainable, environmentally friendly and a healthy household or not? Thank you for your attention.

Book report/review "The Snow Child"

They moved to Alaska to get away from the family, because they had lost their first child. It was hard for Mabel to recover there, because there were children around all the time. In Alaska they were living a very isolated life - no neighbours, no friends. In addition, at that time there did not exist such things as food shops, so they had to hunt all their food. Life was quite hard in Alaska and I am not so sure that it had a good influence on Jack and Mable, however it changed their life in a positive way. I believe that the decision to move to Alaska brought the couple closer and made them stronger. One day they made a snow girl, they put a scarf around her neck and a pair of red mittens, which Mabel's sister had knitted. The next day the snow girl, which they had built in front of their house, was not there anymore. At first, Jack thought that some wild animals had destorey the snow sculpture, but later on, when Jack was in the

Motivation Letter

Motivation Letter I have always known that I want to engage oneself with science. I am interested in how different things react with each other, their influence on human and realised that I can find all these in food science and nutrition. Nowadays people try to improve their food excesses, however, they do this incorrectly. People restrict themselves in food, but in such a manner they are depriving themselves of the important components necessary for the efficiency of the body. Personally, I faced with such diseases and it was hard enough to deal with this by myself. In order to return a healthy appetite, I read a lot of literature but was not sure that I would find the correct way to restore health. That`s why, I want to study Nutrition and Food Science course

Martin Luther King

My presentation will take about 7 min, so let’s start. First of all, I will gonna tell you about his biography, about his early years, private life, how he lived and what education he had. After I would like to tell about his role in the advancement of civil rights and generally his career as a activist and orator. Martin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin, Jr., was a middle child. At the age of 13 King was skeptical of many of Christianity's claims. However, he later concluded that the Bible has "many profound truths which one cannot escape" and decided to enter the seminary. King was very precocious student, he skipped both the ninth and the twelfth grades and entered Morehouse College at age fifteen without formally graduating from high school. He had degree of sociology. King married Coretta Scott, on June 18, 1953, they became the parents of four children. During their marriage, King

(Beautmont, 2012) When considering the safety of innocent people, using drones is the safest way to eliminate a potential threat in troubled areas. The tribal areas are not governed by Pakistan´ s constitution. Therefore, there are no police forces, only military forces, which means that extremists cannot be arrested without ground operations. Pakistani ground operations however, are not as precise and safe as using drones. (Fair, 2013) The use of drones brings back to the subject of intent and “kill lists”. Therefrom, people are questioning its morality. Naturally, it is vital to put a lot of effort in identifying the civilians from the combatants and protecting them. This is the moral responsibility that needs to be taken into account when targeting extremists. (Beautmont, 2012)

All the female characters were in their twenties but Jordan was the only one who still had not got married nor had a child. She had her own ideals and goals, and she stood for them without hesitation. However, by the end of the novel, she did get engaged, which can be seen from a conversation between Nick and Jordan as Nick says that "there were several she could have married at a nod of her head /.../" (Fitzgerald 1993: 160), which means that for a long time, Jordan chose not to marry, ignoring society's pressure and its prototypical image of the 1920s women. A letter and an essay

First of all, a person's lifestyle can be a major factor in their wellbeing, both physical and mental. People who eat too much fast, fatty, or sugary foods without doing enough physical activity, may put on weight. This has serious effects and can lead to heart disease. Similarly, people who smoke and drink too much run the risk of getting cancers and heart disease. However, by avoiding these things and doing simple things such as walking short distances instead of driving, eating five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables a day, and taking 20 minutes' exercise three times a week reduces this risk and can prevent disease. As regards genetic factors, the situation is not so clear. Certain genetic factors mean that some people are forced into a lifestyle

Irish National Costums

Tea and coffee are popular drinks in the home, and Dublin is rapidly developing a café culture. Ireland is also the home of stout, a rich, black beer brewed by Guinness and Murphy's. The traditional cooked breakfast consists of any or all of the following: bacon, sausages, grilled or fried tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs, white and black pudding (a form of blood sausage) and toast or bread fried in fat or oil. Fewer people now eat such a morning meal, however, preferring a lighter breakfast. In recent years, the Irish, particularly those in urban areas, have become much more adventurous in their diet, and now eat a wide variety of European and ethnic food. Pubs (public houses) and cafés serve both snacks and full meals. The Irish generally eat three meals a day. The midday meal is usually referred to as lunch and the evening meal as dinner or, when it is less formal, as supper. But some rural

Estonia

An attempt has been made in Estonia in recent years to disperse the population of wolves, encouraging their spread in areas where their colonies have disappeared, and restricting their numbers in other places where it is too high. About 350 bird species have been recorded in Estonia. More than 200 of them breed in Estonia. Due to the vast preserved natural landscapes, large raptorial birds, such as the golden eagle and eagle owl have made Estonia their home. It is the small islets, however, that can really be called bird paradise. Undisturbed by man and protected from most smaller predators by the sea, they are real nesting sanctuaries for a diversity of birds. The first inhabitants came to the area that now forms present-day Estonia some 11 000 years ago. Estonians were one of the last pagan people in Europe. Estonia was incorporated into Christendom at the beginning of the 13th century, under the pressure of crusaders from Denmark and Northern Germany.

How to survive in Estonia. Guide for foreigner

what to say about those who come from abroad. The problem is particularly acute elderly (old people). Their pensions are small, wherefore they are often forced to work. When people say about government, they responds terms like "corruption" and "incompetence". It is sad to state the fact that the percentage of dissatisfied respondents is higher than the percentage of people who satisfied of their life. The second group of people are more positive. They like to live in Estonia. However, this people is too agreeable that "It is necessary to work and be able to survive." However, still there is a tendency in politics and dissatisfaction with the political situation in the country. Each is based on our personal experience and what he sees around him. Opinions differ, but is confident that most will converge in one- it is not easy to live in Estonia and you cannot live only by subsidy. You've got to be able to adapt and be competitive, in other words, "must be able to Survive."

Katherine Mansfield

All at once she starts to perceive her role in this complex world. Moreover, she begins to wonder over the values and delusions, which are of great importance in life. Throughout the story it stands to reason that she is trying to establish her true self, even though she is steadily influenced by her family, especially by her mother. On account of her constant questionings she finally evolves into an individual, who is capable of distinguishing essential truths of life from unimportant ones, however she still remains to be uncertain, which may indicate that her discoveries are not all-encompassing in nature and may fade away from the memory. From the very beginning it is evident that Laura is a young lady, who tries to learn how to establish herself. During that process she has to step out of her comfort zone for several times. She is often afraid of looking silly or simply weird. As well as, she constantly questions how she should behave

Letter of complaint

Dec 11, 2011 Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to inform you about my bad experiences I had while staying at your hotel from 1st of December to 4th of December. First of all, I stayed at a small room with noisy guests in the next room. Although, I had been told that I would be staying at a large private room far away from other guests. Second of all, the food was terrible. However, the brochure said that you have one of the best chefs in your hotel and that the food will be amazing. Furthermore, when I got the bill, I was shocked how overcharged I was. I assume you will replace my bad experiences with a full refund. I hope that this will not happen anymore and you improve your service. Yours faithfully, Kristi Rapper

Kaebekiri Letter of complaint - jeans

Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to complain about the jeans which I ordered from your mail-order catalogue. I was not pleased when they arrived. To begin with, your advertisement stated that the jeans would be delivered promptly. However, they were delivered late. Secondly, you said that you were the only company in this country licensed to sell this brand, but in fact I have seen them in a local store. Though your advertisement claimed that the price was unbeatable, the ones in the local store were much cheaper. Although your advertisement claimed that the jeans were excellent quality, the zip was broken. The problems do not stop here. You sent me a wrong size. Furthermore, the free T-shirt was missing.

501 S Sapodilla Ave West Palm Beach FL 33401 Dear Sir/Madam, 14 May 2012 I am writing to ask you more about your school in America because I would like to become an exchange student there for a year. I am a 17-year-old girl from Estonia, cheerful, kind and hard-working. I love literature and arts; however, learning new ideas and cultures has always been my secret passion. There are many places I have been to and even more yet awaiting to be explored. I would like to know more about the location of your school, strengths and major subjects. Are there any accommodation possibilities such as staying with host families? It would be interesting to try it at least once in a lifetime. And one more question about the fees is there any extra pay for studies, books, uniform, etc?

There are many different ways to acquire education. In general, all children should receive the same education. However, many parents cannot afford to send their children to a private school. Structural loads

Kristiina Stõkova 105281, EAEI-33 Structural loads As everyone might know that great architecture is the successful marriage of art and technology and a structure is an artifact expressing one of the many aspects of human creativity, however it is an artifact that cannot be created without a deep respect for the laws of nature. And that is the main problem brought out by the author of the book ,,Why buildings stand up", Mario Salvadori. So why should an engineer consider different loads? the answer is simple - if the earth did not pull, the wind did not blow, the earth's surface did not shake or sink and the air temperature did not change, then loads would not exist and structure would be unnecessary
