The gate system here on Pikk street originated in the 1300s, but it was during reconstruction in the early 16th century that the Fat Margaret cannon tower was added. Built from 1511 to 1530, this hefty, round tower has a diameter of 25 metres, a height of about 20 metres, and walls up to 5 metres thick. The origins of Fat Margaret's name are a mystery. Some theories insist it was named for one of its larger cannons, while others hint at a cook called Margaret who once worked here. In any case, the

Description The eastern border of Livonia was mainly formed already in the first half of the 13th century and the first belt of fortresses here was probably ready by the end of the 13th century. The first fortresses were not built on the border but further inland. The first decades of the 14th century brought no changes in the situation. Early in 1340 the relationship with Russians deteriorated again. Provincial master Burchard von Dreileben planned a campaign against Pskov and demanded the help of Tartu bishopric. The provincial master began to build another belt of border fortresses.

crash came from the porch. Both friends jumped at the noise. "It's just the wind," Ben said a little shakily. Although Ben and John felt a little nervous, they walked slowly through the creaky front gate and up the long sidewalk. The old stairs creaked as they climbed onto the porch. Lying on the floor of the porch they saw a broken flower pot. "That's what made the loud crash we heard," Ben said. "See? There's nothing scary here." "Yeah," John said, "Go ahead, Ben." Just then Ben and John saw a large, strange shadow behind the wavy glass in the front door. Suddenly, the shadow started moving towards them! Before they could knock or even think, the door flew open! A large pumpkin stood before them! Ben and John shouted and jumped back with a start! John turned to run away. "Wait! Happy Halloween vampire and zombie!" the large pumpkin said, laughing

Scotland

The oldest building in the castle, and in Edinburgh, is the small St. Margaret's Chapel. One of the few 12th-century structures surviving in any Scottish castle,[38] it dates from the reign of King David I (r.11241153), who built it as a private chapel for the royal family and dedicated it to his mother, Saint Margaret of Scotland, who died in the castle in 1093. The castle has sheltered many Scottish monarchs. They include Queen Margaret (later St Margaret), who died here in 1093, and Mary Queen of Scots, who gave birth to James VI in the Royal Palace in 1566. Eilean Donan Eilean Donan is a small island in Loch Duich in the western Highlands of Scotland. Connected to the mainland by a footbridge, the island is dominated by a picturesque medieval castle. The original castle was built in the early 13th century as a defense against the Vikings. Today, the castle is one of the most photographed monuments in Scotland and a popular venue for weddings and

For and against studying abroad

For and against studying abroad At first it will definitely seem exciting, scary and overwhelming to study and live in another country and far away from all your friends and family back home. This experience will expanded your horizons and make you more independent. Obviously there are both pros and cons to studying abroad, and here is what I think they might be. I believe that there are many advantages that the time abroad will provide you. For instance you will make a lot of friends from all over the world. It is always nice to have a place to stay when you accidentally end up in Japan or Australia for a few days. Being an exchange student is also a fabulous chance for travelling. Getting to know a new country so well is definitely not possible during a holiday or a short visit. Besides living in a new culture

"For the most part," I answered. "Still a few stray boxes here and there." "You moved from San Diego, right? Nice city, but very different from New York. Do you miss the palm trees?" "I miss the dry air. The humidity here is taking some getting used to." "Wait 'til summer hits." He smiled. "So...it's your first day and you're my first assistant, so we'll have to figure this out as we go. I'm not used to delegating, but I'm sure I'll pick it up quick." I was instantly at ease. Toompea For centuries Toompea was always inhabited by the ruling classes. In the Middle ages, it was the place where the bishops and the nobility resided. Here the landed gentry built their beautiful town houses. Most of the remaining buildings were erected after the big fire on Toompea in 1684. Historically, the fortress on Toompea consisted of two parts : the small fortress (today's Toompea Castle) and the big fortress (The rest of Toompea). Pikk Hermann is the best-known corner tower among the three surviving ones of Toompea Castle. It is 46 metres high and serves as one of Estonia's landmarks. Tall Hermann was a traditional name

"If you're too tired to eat out," she went on, "it's still not too late. There's plenty of meat and stuff in the freezer, and you can have it right here and not even move out of the chair." Her eyes waited on him for an answer, a smile, a little nod, but he made no sign. "Anyway," she went on, "I'll get you some cheese and crackers first." "I don't want it," he said. She moved uneasily in her chair, the large eyes still watching his face. "But you must eat! I'll fix it anyway, and then you can have it or not, as you like." She stood up and placed her sewing on the table by the lamp. "Sit down," he said. "Just for a minute, sit down."

must have understood that political allegiance was important. Yet, political bickering is often about such unimportant matters as the height of one's heels. It is interesting to note that even though lying is seen as a terrible offense in Lilliput, Flimnap tells a huge lie (that Gulliver slept with Flimnap's wife) and gets away with it. Apart from the ludicrous physical implications of a giant having relations with a Lilliputian, the problem here is that the society must be able to enforce its norm against lying for the law to matter. This may also be a commentary on the seeming ability of those in positions of power to get away with breaking the law. When the law comes down unfairly on Gulliver, he has actual rather than statutory power to leave, so he simply leaves Lilliput to live with their enemies. Furthermore, satire is shown through the plot of journey and return. The Lilliputians symbolize

Apperances are deceitful!

to get a job, to be promoted, to be excused from doing something they don't want to. The atmosphere around them can not be ruined in any way. Once the reputation is ruined, nice looks will not help any more for they don't matter from no on. But there are people who are equally pretty inside and outside. Such people are pride of the society and are respected greatly. Every one of us knows a lot of examples of above described phenomenon; there's no need to do it here. It is quite possible that people can change so appearances won't matter anymore. The article is meant to help those who suffer from such discrimination to improve their situation, and those who want to start a new life forgetting about their past abuse of own appearance. Beauty is meant to serve to greater good, so a person always has a choice. And it is: to be good and respectable, but use fair ways that sometimes can be hard, or to go the easy way of manipulating

Tallinn Town Hall Square

In summer, it's filled with outdoor cafés and is home to countless openair concerts, handicraft fairs and medieval markets. In winter, an annual Christmas Market enchants the crowds on the square, as does the town's Christmas tree (a tradition whose roots stretch back to 1441), which stays up for a month or more. Town Hall Square has also become the traditional centre of the Old Town Days festival, a modern version of a medieval carnival. Traditions from the Middle Ages are kept alive here, including parades, a knights' tournament, a parrotshooting contest and the election of the May Count. Tallinn`s late Gothic Town Hall building is one of the most famed symbols of the city, recognized throughout Estonia as a venerable, unique architectural treasure. The Town Hall was established on the central square, probably at the beginning of 13th century. In 14021404, the building was substantially reconstructed. The exterior we know today dates from this

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/programmes/tv/jungle/vjungle.shtml Virtual Jungle worksheet I 1. Structure 1.1. Describe these layers Emergents The canopy trees are tall, but some species grow even taller until they stick right out above the canopy. These are called 'emergents' and can reach almost 90m in height. Up here they don't have to compete with other trees for light, but they are exposed to the high winds that lash the canopy during tropical storms. Emergents are the favourite nest sites of jungle eagles such as the harpy eagle of South America. Canopy Suspended 40m above the ground is the canopy - a belt of tree crowns supported by enormous rainforest tree trunks. This is the most productive and diverse habitat on Earth - perhaps 40% of the world's species spend their lives among its branches

Estonia traditional costumes

brooch, in addition to various silver chains. Traditionally, the large setu brooch was only worn by women of child-bearing age; nowadays older women, too, use it as a decoration. The men of the southeast wore their shirts loosely on their pants with a belt, similar to the Russian tradition. North Estonia This region was relatively unified and prone to modernisation. Here people were first to adopt fashionable elements, like breeches and coat suit for men, vertically striped skirts for women, and the indigo colour of fabric. Following the fashion of caps among people of higher social standing, which was also quite common in Estonian towns, the peasant women in the vicinity of Tallinn started to wear pot-caps in the second half of the 18th century. The most characteristic feature of Northern Estonian folk costumes was a short loose long-

To Be Human Is To Discuss

Usually they are just fine, but the grass is always greener somewhere else, am I right? But for me and my class, it's a different story. The grass really is greener anywhere else, actually. Why do we go to school? Do we actually want to learn? I think not. Maybe on some level, until fourth grade or something like that, but most of us are in high school to get good grades, so that parents don't kick us out and still give us food and shelter. How to motivate ourselves to come here every single morning and really study, not just sit with your phone out and watch videos or do something not related to studying to keep from dying of boredom? I think that the main reason students skip class is that they just don't want to sit around for 45 minutes. Another reason, I know that from my own experience, is undone homework. We don't want to get bad grades and we choose not to show up. Maybe it's better not to give homework, like they do in Finland.

Inglise keele arvustus sarjale Jeeves and Wooster

wife. I'm sure that everyone recognise the man who was playing the character Wooster. Hugh is nowadays wellknown first and foremost on the medical drama ,,Dr House", what is very famous and good sequence right now. It's funny to see him acting two totaly different personality's. On Dr House , there he is willful, abstruse but smart doctor. In Jeeves and Wooster hi playes vigorous, correct and cheerful gentleman. For me less known man Jeeves otherwise Stephen did also great job. Here is opinion to him by Michael Brooke: ,,Although Fry was too young to be totally convincing as Jeeves, his superciliously sarcastic "Indeed, sir?" and aura of vast intelligence were enhanced by the actor's real-life reputation as an all- round polymath." Jeeves was intelligent and bated and I really liked his role. The most importand thing in this comedy series, is how directors bring out the old timing: old cars and carriage's were driving on the streets, peoples were wearing smart clothes

The Rise and Demise of the New Public Management, 28 10

came to full fruition in the early 1990s. NPM is part of the neo-classical economic imperialism within the social sciences, i.e. the tendency to approach all questions with neo-classical economic methods. In advanced PA scholarship itself, especially but not only in Europe, NPM is on the defensive by now, if taken as a world view (i.e. an ideology), rather than as one of several useful perspectives for PA reform (i.e. part of a pluralistic approach). The question here is more whether one favors post-NPM (anti-NPM) or post-post-NPM, Weberian-based PA, the latter being the most advanced, and the most sophisticated, and now called the Neo-Weberian State (NWS). What was an option ten years ago is not an option anymore today. I would say that in PA · in 1995, it was still possible to believe in NPM, although there were the first strong and substantial critiques · in 2000, NPM was on the defensive, as empirical findings spoke clearly

Tartu ajalugu

Since 1998 the square is decorated by the "Kissing Students" fountain. Throughout centuries the centre of town activity has been Town Hall Square, the history of which goes back to ancient times. At that time the market place was the square lying between the fortress on Toome Hill and the harbour on the banks of the Emajõgi River. This tradition persisted for centuries. During the midieval period the Town Hall was built here. The present building is the third one in the same place. Compared with the long history of Tartu, the buildings are relatively young: it is rare to find buildings originating from earlier than the last quarter of the 18th century. This is due to the many wars and fires which have passed over the town. During the Great Fire of 1775, nearly the entire town centre burned to the ground. Just after that fire the town began to take on the

Aniliini riskianalüüs (eng)

A large number of workers in chemical. industry (aniline factories) is in danger of aniline poisoning: textile (dyeing and printing), pharmaceutical (manufacturing of neo-salvarsan) and rubber (using aniline as a solvent). At the comfortable aniline factories whole process of getting aniline from start to finish is mechanized, and workers do not have any contact with raw products, semi-finished and finished products, or inhale the fumes. Yet even here we have such cases (break pipes, damage equipment, etc.), under which can turn acute poisoning of workers. At the same time uncomfortable factories there are favorable conditions for both acute and chronic toxicity for workers. Aniline is very dangerous for marine animals, as accumulated in the bodies and leads to death. Also should be noted that alcohol consumption increases the toxicity aniline. 7. Indians

LONG BEFORE the white man set foot on American soil, the American Indians, or rather the Native Americans, had been living in America. When the Europeans came here, there were probably about 10 million Indians populating America north of present-day Mexico. And they had been living in America for quite some time. It is believed that the first Native Americans arrived during the last ice-age, approximately 20,000 - 30,000 years ago through a land-bridge across the Bering Sound, from northeastern Siberia into Alaska. The oldest documented Indian cultures in North America are Sandia (15000 BC), Clovis (12000 BC) and Folsom (8000 BC)

store in Fifth Avenue, one of the world's biggest toy shops. At the entrance there is a singing clock and an actor dressed as a toy soldier who greets visitors. Inside, staff demonstrate many of the games and toys for sale. Niketown is another store that is popular with children. It sells all sorts of stylish sportswear. New Yorkers love their food. Thanks to the many immigrant communities, there is a huge variety of cooking. Everything from Jewish bagels to Japanese sushi can be found here. People eat out more often than home. The day often starts with breakfast at diner. This might be eggs with bacon, waffles, juice and coffee or just a Danish pastry with coffee. Lunch is generally a deli sandwich or some other fast food. New York contains every kind of traditional fast food outlet, from hamburger restaurants to hot dog stands. But there is more on offer, too. Delis will make almost any kind of sandwich a New York favourite is pastrami ( smoked, spiced beef ) on rye bread
