Exposing the Human Condition in Antigone

Exposing the Human Condition in Antigone Heroism entails several things; a selfless act, courage, or the accomplishments of bold and daring expeditions. A hero can also mean courage in the face of death. Others may view this type of hero as stupid, or a martyr. Every hero has faults and these faults along with heroic deeds make the man or woman; a hero, heroine. "Antigone" would be considered a hero in the sense of being a martyr. Because of her love for her family Antigone wanted to give her brother a proper burial, and even though he did evil deeds, she respected him. She believed that all of the dead were in a state of equality. When faced with the decision to obey the King or obey her heart, she says on page 23, in lines 86-90: "I will bury him myself./If I die for doing that, good:/I will stay with him, brother;/and my crime will be devotion." This decision, to bury her brother, was very heroic in that even though she knew deat...

ratio for example a ratio of 12:1 means that a glider can travel forward 12 meters while only losing 1 meter of altitude. Average glide ratio is 17:1 20:1 and average speed is 45-55 km/h. Early forms of gliding had existed in China perhaps by the 4th century AD. Competitions started with "flying as long as possible" and spot landings. With increasing performance cross-country flying replaced them. Usually two to four waypoints have to be passed with a landing at a goal. Nowadays every two years there is a world championship. The Rigid and Women's World Championship in 2006 was hosted by Florida. Texas hosted the 2007 World Championship. Cliff Diving Cliff diving is jumping from a platform that is usually a simple clearing along the cliff above a river, ocean or lake. Sometimes bridges are used as platforms. The platforms can be up to 100 feet above the water. Cliff diving is very popular in Switzerland where annual

Book report/review "The Snow Child"

He was a hunter and had a very strong character. He was responsible for the survival. They both completed each other. In my opinion the book was very enchanting and beautiful. The way the author describes Alaska, is very magical, because she has lived there her whole life. When I was reading the book I felt like I had been to Alaska, the writer really knows how to use the right adjectives to make the reader feel the cold and dark Alaskan winter. In my view, the book achieved its goal perfectly. The author knew exactly what kind of a message she wanted to bring to the reader and I believe that she succeeded. One specific point, which left me a bit confused was Fauna, the snow girl. I still can not understand how and why she woke up and became a real person. I guess this is the fact, which makes this book special, but I would have liked the book more if the author would have added a story about how she woke up. In general it was book that

During a conversation with Elizabeth Bennet Mr. Collins advises her not to fret about her appearance before visiting her ladyship. "Lady Catherine will not think the worse of you for being simply dressed. She likes to have the distinction of rank preserved." However horrid for some aristocrats marriage between the wealthy and the poor appeared, middle class mothers seemed to cherish it as a life goal. Mrs. Bennet is the best [Type here] example to prove that statement. She did not seem to care about the rich candidates' personality or behaviour, all that concerned her was his fortune. When a gentleman, Mr. Bingley, is said to be moving into the neighbourhood she immediately runs to her husband, already in the hopes of having one of her five daughters married to him. Sri Ishopanisad mantra 1 summary notes MRdd

On higher levels meat eating was discouraged and rejected. Our qouta is to eat what nature and God has arranged for us through nature we are prasadians. Why to be a prasadian? The perfection of life is not just to avoid karmic entanglement -less or more, it is to acknowledge & love the Lord. Eating meat = more karmic entanglement Eating vegetarian food = less karmic entanglement, but still karmic entanglement will be there. If we want to avoid karmic entanglement, which is the ultimate goal of life, we have to acknowledge the Lord. What happens when we acknowledge the Lord? That time we are living in harmony with nature:"My dear Lord, you have given this to me & I thank you for what you have given & please accept my gratitude through the prayers that I am offering & please let me serve you with my life." The point of offering the food to the Lord is to understand that the Lord is actually the enjoyer. Offering food is jagija

look good in someone's eyes or just because telling others something they want to hear or believe grows a certain kind of respect and belief in people. Another technique Napoleon used to increase his power over other animals was telling bizarre and libellous stories of Snowball. This motivated other animals to work harder and as a unit against Snowball. This brainwash is something people tend to do, not only in politics, but also in everyday life. They come up with a specific goal that everyone pursues so they would get people's support, respect and commitment. In addition to get people under someone's control by telling them lies, it is in human nature to use specific attributes for their own benefit. In the book Napoleon took advantage of the fact that he was smarter and more astute than the other animals. He exploited their trust and their stupidity. Napoleon made other animals do loads of

Also she encouraged the audience to move more and told that her life quality has increased greatly due to moving and having meetings while walking. In addition, she used a rhyme to make sure that her message is said out loud and clear - “walk and talk, walk and talk”. I think she reached the goal with her rhyme and whole presentation. At least I started to think differently after listening to her presentation.

The Role of the Hippie Movement in 21st Century Britain

think about this, it is almost the same. Hippies in 1960’s used different drugs etc to expand their counsciousness; today’s (not only) hipsters use also drugs and alcohol to relax and get away from reality. This generation is a return to the hippie era. Among a select group of mostly college- graduates from more affluent, educated families, there is decided a turn away from consumerism and toward a more do-it-yourself ethos, where leaving a small footprint is the goal. They are seeking a connection in their work, and in their nonwork lives. In their nonwork lives this is exemplified by a quest for smaller, purer production, and an embrace of individualism and the spirit of the garage tinkerer. They are embracing handmade crafts, small-batch beers, artisanal cheesemaking, farm-to-table food. The impact, good and bad, of the 1960’s hippie movement cannot be denied. The movement influenced popular music, television, film, literature, and the arts. The music

The Future of Work or How Artificial Intelligence Will Affect Us in 20 years

The Future of Work Automation anxiety has been spreading lately. What's clear is that there will be significant change. What's less clear is what that change will look like. The threat of technological unemployment is real. A picture that we see on our television screens, in everyday commentary is one where an army of robots descend on the workplace with one goal in mind: to displace humans from their work. Yes, machines displace humans from particular tasks, but they don't just substitute for humans. They also complement them in other tasks. Sometimes they complement humans directly. So a taxi driver can use a satnav system to navigate on unfamiliar roads. It also complements humans indirectly and it does this in two ways. Think the economy as a pie. Technological progress makes the pie bigger. As

Kuidas kirjutada esseed

The whole point of this exercise is to generate a mass of information that will help you in selecting your topic for the essay. Try to make your topic focused and broad at the same time, it sounds paradoxical but it's not. If the topics above do not help in stimulating your creativity and eliminating the writers' block, try following some of these steps: Ask help from parents, friends or colleagues Consider your childhood Consider your role models Read sample admission essays Goal determination Once you have generated the list of potential topics, look over it and revise. Add something if you want to and remove things you feel you might not be able to write about. Do this as many times as you can over the period of one week and develop your thoughts. Another good idea would be to show your list to people who know you and get feedback from them. If you do not come up with an idea for your essay, even after reading all these instructions - do not worry!

Rational Use of Diagnostic Tests

Rational Use of Diagnostic Tests Screening tests Diagnostic tests are often used to screen asymptomatic patients and identify risk factors for occult disease. Screening tests should be generally noninvasive, inexpensive, and of minimal risk to the patient. Screening tests should have high diagnostic sensitivity, which means few false negative results would be expected, as the goal of testing is to rule out the presence of disease. Screening tests should be used to screen for diseases that (1) have serious consequences if left undetected, (2) are reasonably prevalent within the population, and (3) have treatment options readily available. Should a positive result be obtained, a more accurate, confirmatory test should then be performed. One example of a screening test would be the urine cortisol-to-creatinine ratio (Cort:Crt)u,

Clarification

I'm talking about desktop PCs Are you saying that foreign-based multi-nationals decide who is going to be British Prime Minister. Well you might as well argue that the government should subsidize all shops. I'm saying that it's the British tax-payer who pays the bill. What I'm saying is that we are too interdependent. Perhaps our populations are too big. That's why I'm advocating self-sufficiency as a goal. What I'm saying is that older people have been there before. They've had the problems and found the solutions. What are you trying to say? To come to the point, there are so many different motives for marriage that it's impossible to generalize about why people prefer married to single status. That may be so, but for most people the whole point of marriage is to live together and possibly to raise a family. That's what this discussion's about.

Object-oriented programming.

Object-oriented programming. Object-oriented programming (OOP) is a programming paradigm that uses "objects" and their interactions to design applications and computer programs. Programming techniques may include features such as information hiding, data abstraction, encapsulation, modularity, polymorphism, and inheritance. It was not commonly used in mainstream software application development until the early 1990s. Many modern programming languages now support OOP. Class Defines the abstract characteristics of a thing (object), including the thing's characteristics (its attributes, fields or properties) and the thing's behaviors (the things it can do, or methods, operations or features). One might say that a class is a blueprint or factory that describes the nature of something. For example, the class Dog would consist of traits shared by all dogs, such as breed and fur color (characteristics), and the abilit...

Estonian War of Independence

During World War I the greatest colonial power in Europe the Russian Empire seized to exist. On its ruins the formerly enchained nations founded their own states. Among them was the Estonian Republic, officially declared on February 24, 1918. When Germany surrendered to the Western Allies on November 11, 1918 a strategic vacuum arose in Eastern Europe. The new rulers of Russia the Bolsheviks decided to use it as a proper moment to re-conquer their lost territories. The ultimate goal was international communist revolution and Germany was the first standing on their way. Thus on November 13, 1918 the Government of Soviet Russia denounced peace with Germany. On November 16 the Commander-in-Chief of the Red Army, Jukums Vacietis, gave orders to start a massive attack on a long front from the Gulf of Finland to the Ukraine. On November 28, two divisions of the Red Army (altogether 12,000 troops) crossed the Estonian border. The War of Independence had begun.

Short and long term effects of alcohol

Excessive drinking may lead to unconsciousness or alcohol poisoning. Death can also occur. Different concentrations of alcohol in the human body have different effects on the subject. Depending on the BAC (blood alcohol concentration) there are different states the consumer may end up: euphoria, lethargy , confusion, stupor, coma. Therefore it is important to have control over alcohol intake in order to avoid coma while the goal is euphoria. make others worry about their age or stop caring about another person's suicide. Convincing others is like a game to him. It amuses him and helps him study human nature that he claims to know so well. The life of Lord Henry is all about one party topping another. You can call him a good people-person. He attends all polite social events for example parties and theatres. He drags his subjects of study with him to expand his influence span. His life goal is to celebrate youth and pleasure and he doesn't let anything come on his way of partying. You could call him even unshakeable as he can turn even the most dramatic events into a reason to party without a care in the world. Lord Henry Wotton is probably someone whose shoes would be interesting and fun to walk in but whose company is a tough burden to bear.

Everybody wanted to own a lot of countries and others had to fight for their created country. Also they started to teach young people to kill and protect their country with killing enemies. Also government tried to keep a low profile, if there were some wars in state. These are my thoughts of creating and keeping something. In the old times were many wars. Some states predominated over other weaker countries or states. Weaker countries had created their own and loved country and they wanted to live like that for a long time. Why do we need morality?

So morality is the glue holding together our society, without moral codes and values it would break down. Moralities purposes are related, but not identical. Different theories accent different purposes. For example utilitarianists think that most important are human flourishing and amelioration of suffering, whereas contractual system emphasise the resolution of conflicts. A virtuous person is someone who believes and follows all the purposes. The goal of morality is to create virtuous and happy people, who will develop a flourishing community. It is important that humankind uses its deepest potential for the greater good. The moral values do not depend on the religion, culture or individualities. They are the absolute universal principles that apply everywhere. But of course it depends on the context and some rules can exclude others. For example when one lies to save an innocent life. Most of the time the good is still good and vice versa

Nowadays it is one of the most successful beer brands in the world, being exported worldwide. sports : First I'm going to talk about Gaelic football so , teams of 15 players, kick or hand pass a ball around a grass pitch towards each others goals to either score a point over the bar or goal. The ball used in Gaelic football is round, slightly smaller than a soccer ball. The action is fast and furious, and play is rough. another famous field sport is hurling - It's played on a large field with a curved wooden stick (or "Hurley"), and with a leather ball, so its pretty much like a hockey on a field , mission is to score the ball between the opponents goalposts. It can be described as one of the fastest and most skilful field games in the world and it's not for the faint of heart

Forestry and the forest industry in Japan

been sugi (Cryptomeria japonica - Jaapani seedripuu) and hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa - Jaapani küpress), representing 63% in 1955 and 73% in 1993 and maintaining a rate of over 60% during this period. Hinoki tended to increase, whereas sugi tended to decrease. Both are coniferous species whose timber is sawn into housing materials. --------------------- Since 1868, when the Meiji restoration occurred and Japan established a decentralized market economy, the national goal for forests and forestry has been to build up the forest resource rapidly and satisfy the demand for forest products by utilizing domestic resources. In order to accomplish this, the central government has treated private forestry sympathetically through several policy instruments. In the early postwar period, the government subsidized half the planting cost in order to rapidly reforest areas destroyed in the war. Afforestation on bare land

There is no advertising on the BBC. On the other hand, ITV and Channels Four and Five rely on advertising for their survival. Generally speaking, BBC1 and ITV produce and show programmes of wider appeal, while BBC2 and Channel 4 cater more for minority interests and have a strong cultural component. Channel Five, instead, has a lot of ''soap operas'', chat shows and reality TV shows. ETV was the first public TV channel in Estonia. It was launched in 1955. Its goal was to entertain Estonian people and to give them information about different cultural events. It broadcast the Estonian song festival and showed a lot of new Estonian films.

IS MEDIA DECEIVING AND PACIFYING THE POPULATION?

Digitalization has also brought us many new platforms and more possibilities for media to reach even more people. The internet is allowing anyone to share information instantly to all over the world. It might be thought that with all these new developments, problems like controlling of the media and deceiving people are gone, but it seems that things are not that clear. When the first newspapers appeared, they were just a part of small businesses, whose goal was to make money by selling the reports of recent events. People bought the papers to stay up to date or read something interesting about a distant occurrence. However the businesses soon changed into not only covering the recent news, but also politics and viewpoints of different people. The newspaper publishers had changed from selling news to being dealers of public opinion. (Habermas, 1991). The readers had no doubt to question the content of

Law-makers breaking the law: torture as a justified interrogation technique?

There are enough legal and ethical grounds to do so. The most evident grounded reason is probably the fact that it harms the dignity of a human being. However, this argument convinces some more than others. The consequential idea that a small evil is allowed to avoid a bigger evil doesn't uphold any valid norms or values but emphasizes the justness of the outcome. This gives room to place truth and morality aside, because the goal is set and the means to obtain it serve the purpose of the goal. A great flaw that arises here though is what is called the association fallacy. What can happen according to such reasoning is that an incorrect understanding of a situation causes for a certain new behaviour, which makes the original incorrect understanding true. The believer of the original understanding will present the series of events to prove that they were right from the beginning. In the case of torture and the saving of innocent lives, this would mean that the wrong

their favourite sport, has influenced my choice as well. Although I have seen a lot of football matches on TV, I have unfortunately had only one chance to go and see the game in the field. This was an experience I would like to repeat. It was much interesting to watch the game in the real field and I was much more excited about the game. Football is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players each. It is a ball game played on a rectangular grass field with a goal at each end. The objective of the game is to score by maneuvering the ball into the opposing goal. The winner is the team which has scored most goals at the end of the match. There are many worldwide international competition of football. Idealization of nature in Romantic poetry

Idealization of Nature in Romantic Poetry One of the main characteristics of romanticism in general is the constant praising of nature and connecting it with almost everything. As the second half of the 18 th century was the time of the industrial revolution, urbanization and mankind's distancing from nature in every way, it is not surprising that as a result it became more and more important to and valued by people it had suddenly become something remote and far from everyday life, somewhat a luxury. The utmost way this luxury manifests in romantic poetry is nature's ability to help whoever takes the time to value its divinity get in touch with themselves and get away from everything that might influence their way of acting. Nature provides the ideal atmosphere and surroundings to do this in the opinion of romantic poets, it is the very best place to come to when in need of solitude or an answer to personal or social conflicts....
