Social Problems

collected and/or calculated may affect the public perceptions of the extent of any given "crime problem". All such adjustments to crime statistics, allied with the experience of people in their everyday lives, shape attitudes on the extent to which law should be used to enforce any particular social norm. There are many ways in which behaviour can be controlled without having to resort to the criminal justice system. Indeed, in those cases where there is no clear consensus on the given norm, the use of criminal law by the group in power to prohibit the behaviour of another group may be considered an improper limitation of the second group's freedom, and the ordinary members of society may lose some of their respect for the law in general whether the disputed law is actively enforced or not. Legislatures pass laws (called mala prohibita) that define crimes which violate social norms. These laws vary from time to time and from place to place:

A short story

Today was one of those days where everything went wrong. I had prepared myself for a job interview for a long time because I wanted that job so much. One day before the interview I set the alarm clock at 7.00am, so that I would have enough time to get ready. The interview started at 9.00am. I woke up in the morning because I heard a door bell and wondered who could come so early. I saw my neighbour standing at the door holding a newspaper. ,,You always come at 8 o'clock. What are you doing here so early?" I asked. She raised her eyebrows, felt really confused and said she had come as usual. I glanced at my watch and understood that my alarm clock hadn't rang. My job interview would start in one hour and I had to hurry on a bus. Half an hour later I was in the bus station and felt relieved because I had still 5 minutes until my bus came. So I waited and looked at the timetable and saw that the bus drove every working day except that day....

A person who has committed a crime loses his/her right to be

Second, another area, where we can find inequality, is at work. When looking for a job, first of all, people without criminal past are chosen first. Employers tend to choose their employees regarding to the past, because they are careful about a person they choose to work with. You should be able to trust a person, to rely on him/her and who can value honesty and work ethics. Quite frequently people who committed a crime aren't even given a chance to prove, can they can also be valuable employees. In conclusion, it is hard to be treated as equal, if you have committed a crime. It is a formed standard, which doesn't seem to change much during the years. A person just has to contribute hard at work and with people to earn his/her position in the society. It is not pleasant, but still there is always a chance for everyone. Inna Lõhmus, TABB 051828

Essee, Homelessness

Better programs must be created if we want to help homeless people. When people choose to be homeless, they do so because they feel separated from mainstream society. If the dominant social order has no place for a person, they must find another group where they feel needed. The homeless have trouble belonging to a community. Many people do not want the homeless to be apart of the same social circle. People are embarrassed of the homeless because of the many stereotypes that they have been given. It is time we stop ignoring the homeless and treating them as if they do not exist. Government must play a better role in helping these individuals that do not have a home. Social workers must find different means for helping the homeless. Permanent residence facilities should be considered instead of temporary shelters. Job programs for the homeless must concentrate on getting these people out of the streets and into the workplace so they can make something of

not on their personal experience. In addition it appears that students might not know the plus sides and possibilities that student organizations could enable them so they do not even bother to make clear the benefit of being part of student organizations. One the other hand it might be said that students who have been in many student organizations have got jobs or scholarships more easily than those who have not. Firstly taking part actively in student organizations have given them many useful contacts and they have had mentors. Also secondly joining student organizations might provide help with students future careers and most of all it improves their social skills which causes personal and personality development. For example students on one student organization share similar interest, hobby or religion and it helps to network being in one group and supplementing each other. Briefly, it can be said that students who belong to some student organization get more

The Lively Side of Death

Death started working as a chef, preparing meals faster than anyone had ever seen. And he liked it. It was described in the book that he felt warm and content, .apparently he was experiencing happiness Later on in the book it was revealed that since Mort was slowly taking over Death's duties, Death started becoming more human. They finally reverted to their normal selves, but at the end of the .book, there was given a hint that Death still had retained some human feelings In conclusion, Death's development in "Mort" was wonderful to read, especially due to its somewhat random and heartwarming nature. Even though it was not a change by heart, it was .good to see that a bit of humanity had rubbed off on Death

Charles Darwin

distinctly different species was far too time consuming to be directly demonstrated. All the naturalists had available, apart from bones, was an understanding of the state of life as it is on earth today. Essentially, The Origin of Species approached the problem of evolution through two lines of argument and interpretation, both rooted in the concept of inherited variation. Darwin showed that the distinction between species was not hard and fast. There are varieties of a given intricately adapted to different conditions, that routinely interbred along the boundary between their home territories, but the mixed varieties tend to remain confined to the boundary area, since they are less adapted than either of the base varieties to their own home territories. Specification in nature did not require dramatic jumps, but could emerge out of gradually widening variation. Darwin examined variation under domestication to demonstrate

Anglo - Saxon

Lower class people, such as slaves and poorer peasants could only use wool for their garments, even garments worn against the skin. Linen, harvested from the flax plant, was a finer material which was used for garments. Silk was an extremely expensive material, and it was used only by the very rich, and then only for trim and decoration. Men`s fashion The primary garment consisted of a knee-length woolen tunic. For the poorer, this would be the only clothing worn, although some may have been given woolen trousers and shoes to wear. A linen undertunic and linen braies would be worn by richer peasants and nobility, along with woolen hose. Over the tunic, a cloak would be worn, which was held together by a brooch or, later on, a ring. The Phrygian cap was the main style of headcovering worn by men, although hoods would also be worn. Women´s fashion The main garment for a woman was a woollen gown of ankle length. Occasionally two gowns

Chile's unusual, ribbon-like shape -- 4,300 kilometres long and on average 175 kilometres wide -- has given it a hugely varied climate, ranging from the world's driest desert -- the Atacama -- in the north, through a Mediterranean climate in the centre, to a snow-prone Alpine climate in the south, with glaciers, fjords and lakes. The Pacific forms the country's entire western border, with a coastline that stretches over 6,435 kilometres. This suggests that programmes such as Wilder Opportunities have had an effect on the breadth of music-making in the UK. However the aricle suggests that there are still barriers like financial opportunities – the cost of instruments and lessons, then of course the lack of parental support and students not being interested. Of children that had never played an instrument, both the cost of learning and the opportunity to do so were given as reasons than the lack of interest in learning suggests that barriers to even a first experianse remain impossible to some. Formal letter

Formal letter Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing in order to complain about a situation which happened on 26th of September, when I was dining at the Babyback Ribs &Bbq restaurant. To start from the beginning, at first when we entered the restaurant there was no-one to serve us. Then, when we had waited for a long time a young girl came to us and asked us if we had a table booked, we answered that we did not and so we were given the menus and lead to available seatings. When we had decided what to have there was once again no-one to serve us and when the waitress finally showed up she could not answer our questions about the specifics of the menu. Finally we came to a conclusion that I would take the french fries, but without jalapeno, which I especially accentuated. After 15 minutes of more waiting the dishes arrived, but there was still jalapeno in my food. I was really disappointed and took the dish

SPEECH: Attitude rather than aptitude is the key to succsess

60/40 would be more suitable.) In my opinion, it goes for every field. From knowledge to beauty, form sport to art and so on. If you're talented and think that work is overrated, then you have a wrong attitude. You may be the best for some time, but the diligent ones will (by)pass you quickly. (40 sek) On the other hand, attitude is changeable, nor like aptitude. Attitude can be easily changed by impressions and experiences. Aptitude countrawise is given by nature and nobody can change it. You can only increase your aptitude a litte bit with hard work. Being open to new experiences could lead you to right direction. You just have to find things you're good at. Because it would be dissapointing to work really hard and alwats stay on the same level/ you probably wouldn't get far. Successful people know what they want to achive. They have a clearly defined goal. They are constantly seeking ways to learn and improve

In an interview with the BBC he said: "We don't let animals suffer, so why humans?" Aside from his academic accolades, the professor learned to adapt to life after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease and given two years to live when he married his first wife, Jane, in 1964. Only 5% of people with the form of MND that he has - a condition called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease - survive for more than a decade after diagnosis But he added: "There must be safeguards that the person concerned genuinely wants to end their life and they are not being pressurised into it or have it done without their knowledge or

All the world's a puzzle;arutlev kirjand

(W. Shakespeare) There lie more answers beneath these poetical phrases than one could ever give when describing a textbook just like the actors, we seek for knowledge without really finding it until we've finished the play. Every written piece of paper is something precious it contains information that can either make our day or totally ruin the mood; that's the secret of all books. They have the power to change the world up-side down. The English textbook given to us this year is something we must carefully treasure after all, there are going to be more people next year either to praise or suffer from it. But not the emotions count at the moment, the future does we must all learn from this wonderful book that wit is not easily gained, however once it's collected, it'll be never lost again. The first chapter includes three specially chosen units. Unit one includes reading about the

Essay about NewZealand and Australia

From this came the flow of foreigners to New Zealand, first contacts with the Maori people were full of misunderstanding and conflicts. In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the Maori and the British, with what the Maori accepted the British colonization in exchange for the protection of their lands. But still, 20 years later a war between the Maori and white people or pekaha broke out and finally the native people of New Zealand were defeated. New Zealand was given dominion status in the British Empire in 1907 and granted autonomy by Britain in 1931, independence was formally proclaimed 1947. Today the Maori population is increasing faster than the pekaha, and Maori culture has had a major impact on New Zealand's society. The word "aboriginal" means "the first" or "the earliest known". The Aborigines reached Australia more than 40 000 years ago. They are dark-skinned people who probably came from Asia
