Charles Spencer Chaplin

His success was immediate and he remained true to his funny costume all through his career. In 1918 he formed his own company and started producing films. He produced 80 films and in 79 of them he played the central character. Many have said that he was the greatest comic genius of all time. What made his comedy so popular was the sympathy for human beings of the oddest sorts as well as for the ordinary people. The life of his characters was full of misfortunes, but the always overcame their despair with courage and determination. Although he denied any social meaning in his films he ridiculed the values of society mercilessly. In "Modern Times" he showed the terrible working conditions at the production line in a giant US factory. His first full length talkie "The Great Dictator" was an anti-fascist masterpiece ridiculing Hitler. After WW II he spoke out against the McCarthy witch-hunts against communists...

The Cataclysmic Death of Stars

The waves exert a pressure that expels material, reinforcing the shock wave created by the star's collapse. They also amplify the core's vibrations in a runaway reaction, says Burrows, "until the star finally explodes." For someone brave enough to come within hearing distance, the waves would be audible, roughly the F note above middle C. Burrows acknowledges that sound waves may not be the full story. But his model tends to produce a lopsided explosion, and stars do indeed explode asymmetrically, with more punch in some directions than others. That was true for supernova 1987A, recorded 20 years ago, the closest and brightest supernova since 1604. Astronomers also have found that some of the neutron stars left behind by supernovas zip along at 500 miles a second (800 kilometers a second), as if the explosion had imparted an enormous kick in one direction....

Bridges presentation

Foreword Bridging rivers, gorges, narrows, straits, and valleys always has played an important role in the history of human settlement. Since ancient times, bridges have been the most visible testimony of the noble craft of engineers. A bridge can be defined in many ways, but Andrea Palladio, the great 16th century Italian architect and engineer, hit on the essence of bridge building when he said "...bridges should befit the spirit of the community by exhibiting commodiousness, firmness, and delight." In more practical terms, he went on to explain that the way to avoid having the bridge carried away by the violence of water was to make the bridge without fixing any posts in the water. Since the beginning of time, the goal of bridge builders has been to create as wide a span as possible which is commodious, firm, and occasionally delightful. Spanning greater distances is a distinct measure...

Valentine's day

On this day everyone makes gifts and send cards to their friends. Hand-made cards are the most beautiful. In some countries it isn't very old holiday, like in Estonia. On this day nobody should fight. It is the day of love. It is usual to buy chocolate boxes to you're friend; mostly men give it to women. But in Japan it is conversely. There are a lot of poems and jokes for Valentine's Day. It is nice to write them on the card. Everyone likes 14th February: it is sweet, lovely and full of love. Tourists in Estonia

And they are here for only one thing. Finns are not anyone who would like to see Estonian sight-seeings or old-town, they are here for cheap alcohol. Regular Finn are an over-weight and very loud, usually because they are drunk. And our hotels are full of Finns. If you ever visit a passenger-port and see a person who have one or more luggage carriers full of export beer boxes then you have seen our north-neighbour. The Brits Usually here are only British bachelors who want to have a stag party in our pubs. These kind of Brits are very annoying. But here are also nice old Brits, much less than bachelors but still some. Older Brits usually are with cameras and visit all the sightseeing in Tallinn. They look very intelligent and for some reasons all Brits are very skinny. The Japanese...

Sin City - review

wrapped together like one masterpiece. All the film is about are corruption and different characters who manage themselves through the grimy and violent city. Frank Miller had bring some remarkable characters into his comic novel like Marv, who is huge hulking thug and almost impossible to kill. I was very impressed by that film. It gave me a whole new movie experience. Every scene looked like a masterpiece. Actually every frame was like a perfect photo of a city full of violence and passion. Sin City is a "must see" movie. It gives a very much new ideas about cinematography. For someone who loves Frank Millers work should certainly see Sin City as a film....

New York City

American children must complete 12 years of education. In New York City this lasts from the ages of 6 to 17. Children begin at elementary school, move on to middle school and finish at high school, where most gain a diploma. New York offers a variety of high schools for pupils who want to specialize from their teenage years, for example the School of the Performing Arts. New Yorkers seem to be always on the move. In Manhattan the pavements are full of pedestrians, while cars, buses and taxis jam the roads. Driving in central New York is only for the daring, so people often take one of the famous yellow taxis instead. There are about 12 000 of them in the city. Another way to get around overground is to take a bus. New York's express buses do not make many stops, so they go much faster than regular buses but they still cannot avoid the jams. New York's first subway line opened in 1904. Now the system has 469 stations and is used by...

Australia

Only one country in the world fills a whole continent. That country is Australia. The continent it fills is Australia, too . Its full name is Commonwealth of Australia . Australia is the only continent except Antarctica that is all south of the equator . Its name is ´´´southland´´. Since it is south of equator, its seasons are just the opposite of ours . Sometimes Australia is called the island continent . Two hundred years ago there were no white people in Australia . The only inhabitants were dark-skinned people who were still living in a Stone Age . Their only weapons were stone knives, simple spears, and boomerangs...

The Queens of England

When she died on January 22, 1901, outliving the century, she was one of the best-known figures, by reputation as well as name, not only in the United Kingdom but also in a greatly expanded British Empire and in the world, including the United States. Her reign had been the longest in British history, and she had given her name to an age --the age of Victorian Britain. Elizabeth II Elizabeth II, full name Elizabeth Alexandra Mary (1926- ), Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (1952- ), daughter of King George VI and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, born in London. In 1944 she served as a councillor of state while her father was on the war front in Italy. She married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947, and a year later gave birth to a son, Charles. "River of Death" Alistair Maclean

Military came and arrested the criminals. Hamilton showed his mothers and fathers grave to Manteuffel. Manteuffel said that he was going to be a dead man. So military was going to take manteuffel away but he managed to get free and jumped off the cliff. Hamilton repeated his word about being a dead man. The crew found big amount of treasures. The Lost city really existed. My opinion It was a great book. At first book seemed boring but like author said about the book, that it is full of suprises and it was true. The end was quite interesting. It was a bit hard to read, because some pages consist of lots of new word. But if the harder word were translated, then it was easy to follow....

Tallinn-topic

They erected a chapel among their wooden houses. The church was built against the northern wall of the chapel. It was named after St. Nicholas, the patron saint of merchants and seafarers. After the big fire of 1433 the church was rebuilt with proper splendour. The spire dates from the 16th century. During the Reformation in 1524 many valuable works of art were distroyed in Tallinn. The locks on the doors of Niguliste Church had been poured full of melted lead, and so it was the only church where the masterpieces of the 14th and 15th century stonecarving, woodcarving and painting survived. Most of the relics were distroyed in the Soviet air-raid on March 9, 1944. The restoration took place from 1953 to 1984. Now the church is a concert hall and the Museum of Medieval Art. St Olaf's Church , a 3-nave Gothic basilica, was first mentioned in chronicles in 1267. It...
